The document discusses various causes and treatment approaches for nausea from an acupuncture perspective, focusing on balancing the autonomic nervous system, treating points along stomach and other meridian lines, and using ion pumping cords.

Shortness of breath, palpitations, anxiety, anger, emotional instability, headache, high blood pressure, back pain, decrease in frequency and quantity of urination, insomnia, lack of appetite, dizziness, eye pain, and/or cold hands and feet. Patients will often present with a rapid and tight pulse.

Checking the pituitary treatment points to change nausea reflexes. The primary points are SI 3 and SI 13. Secondary points include Above UB 10, UB 2, and Yuyao. Moxa may be used at GB 4-6 if there is a tender spot.

Sympathetic Dominance

Kiiko states that most complaints of nausea and other gastric issues by patients coming to an
acupuncture clinic are due to an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system. (Vol. 2, 195) A patient
with a Sympathetic Dominant pattern (fight or flight) will have a reduction in the function of the
Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest), which can lead to many digestive problems. Thus
balancing the autonomic nervous system is primary in treating nausea and vomiting, or any other
digestive disorders. (Vol. 1, 107)

Signs and Symptoms:

A patient with nausea due to sympathetic dominance may also present with shortness of breath,
palpitations, anxiety, anger, emotional instability, headache, high blood pressure, back pain, decrease in
frequency and quantity of urination, insomnia, lack of appetite, dizziness, eye pain, and/or cold hands
and feet. Patients will often present with a rapid and tight pulse. (Vol. 1, 107)

Diagnosis:

SCM (primarily (R))

Ki 2

Treatment:

1. Address Ki 2, if painful, with Ki 7 and 10. Often, Lu 10 on the same side will also be painful.
Address with Lu 5 and 8
2. Address rapid pulse with CV 4 and/or 6

3. Use Shaoyang treatment to address tension on the SCM

o Rapid pulse: Contralateral TW 5, GB 41

o Slow pulse: Contralateral TW 9, GB 40

4. PC choice

GV 2 is important for calming the sympathetic nervous system, especially if patient presents with a rapid
pulse (Vol. 1 pp.110) In nausea and no appetite, treat this point 10 to 15 upward (with the flow) to the
depth of about 1cm. Then add a sugar point. Retain 10-15, then turn patient over and treat UB 2.

Also important to consider: Check for Liver deficiency

Signs and Symptoms

Digestive problems

Fatigue

Menstrual problems, pregnancy related problems (particularly morning sickness, lack of

appetite, fatigue, and retention of fluids)

Muscle pain and spasm, facial pain (Bells palsy, sinusitis, toothache), ankle joint pain, knee pain
(patellar ligament, fluid in the knee, shin splints)

Problems affected by seasonal, weather, or gravitational field changes, or travel between time
zones

Diagnosis:
Deficient St Qi pulse or a moderate pulse
Treatment:
Clear Oketsu and Immune Reflexes first
Treat (L) St Qi Line, then (R) St Qi Line

Pituitary Imbalance

Pituitary imbalance can often interfere with the metabolism of protein, fat and/or carbohydrates, which
may be the underlying cause of nausea. (Vol. 1, 143)
If nausea is accompanied by any hormonal imbalances, check the pituitary treatment points to change
nausea reflexes.

Stagnation of Blood in the Head

Nausea and vomiting can be symptomatic of stagnation of blood in the head.

Signs and Symptoms:

If nausea is accompanied by forgetfulness, confusion, lack of concentration, headaches, chronic sinus
problems, low blood pressure, depression, insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, vertigo, eyesight problems,
difficulty swallowing, and/or a heavy feeling in the base of the occipital area, palpate for stagnation of
blood in the head. (Vol. 1, 48-49)

Diagnosis:
Palpation: skin will feel loose and not tightly stretched over the bone. Can feel as though there is a
gelatin-filled space between the skull and scalp.

If patient presents with pressure pain at Huato Jiaji of cervical spine, use vertebral artery insufficiency
treatment (see below)

If skull feels edematous, use 8-15 moxa stimulations.

Vertebral Artery Insufficiency

Since stagnation of blood in the head can be caused by a vertebral artery insufficiency, many of the signs
and symptoms are shared. It may be necessary to treat both if they are indicated for a patients nausea.

Signs and Symptoms:

Some accompanying symptoms may be numbness and tingling in any of the four limbs, vertigo, sudden
eyesight decline, difficulty swallowing, pressure at the occipital region, occipital to temporal headaches,
pain along the spinal column, Parkinsons disease, diabetic retinopathy, degeneration of spinal discs,
speech disorder, forgetfulness, mental confusion. (Vol. 1, 234)

Diagnosis:

Visceroptosis

Signs and Symptoms:

Visceroptosis of the intestines can cause nausea, indigestion, belching abdominal pain, constipation, and
diarrhea. (Vol. 1, 217) If accompanied by a typical visceroptosis body shape, low back pain, discomfort in
the groin area, tired legs, thigh and knee pain, sciatica, stiff shoulders, frequent urination, and fatigue,
check for visceroptosis.

Hyperkyphosis

Nausea can also be caused as a secondary symptom to a hyperkyphosis in the thoracic vertebrae. This is
due to the compression on the stomach that this posture may involve.

Signs and Symptoms:

Nausea due to hyperkyphosis will most likely include other symptoms such as neck, back, and shoulder
pain and spasms, and possibly chest tightness.

Treatment:
Palpate all Huato Jiaji points and treat all sore or tight spots
Moxa at CV12 and CV6 (Kyutoshin or newspaper moxa)

Miscellaneous

St 19 "Cannot hold, contain food" is a reflection point of nausea, vomiting. (Vol. 2, 193)

Huato Jiaji points between T5 and T6 are important diagnostic and treatment points for stomach
problems. Treat the specific stomach problem first, and then, if the pressure pain at T5-6 and other
stomach reflexes remains, treat these directly. (Vol. 1, 30)

Morning sickness Treatments that can be used safely for morning sickness in pregnancy are the
Stomach Qi treatment (see above) 306, treatment of Sp 5 in the case of a pancreatitis presentation (Vol.
1, 285), and SI 11 (Vol. 1, 326)

Ion Pumping Cord Treatment

Manakas Method
Manakas extraordinary vessel ion pumping cord treatment using Yinwei Mai and Chong Mai can be
used for stomach problems. (Vol. 2, 199)
Choose the Master and Couple point based on signs and symptoms. Use the black clip on the master
point and the red clip on the couple point. Depending on the patients reaction to the treatment, the
orientation of the clips may be switched.

"After five to ten minutes, the pressure pain in abdominal diagnosis points for stomach disorder should
be significantly reduced." (Vol. 2, 199)

Yin Wei Mai

Signs and Symptoms:

Nervousness
Heart problems
Palpitations
Psychological problems
Insomnia
Stomach Problems
Right-sided problems

Diagnosis:

Treatment:
Black clip on PC 6, Red clip on Sp 4

Use Pachi-Pachi to spark along the length of the cords without touching them or the clips.

Chong Mai
Signs and Symptoms:
Heart problems
Neurosis
Stomach Problems
Gynecology problems
Cold feet
Liver and Gallbladder problems
Problems of the anus

Diagnosis:

Treatment:
Black clip on Sp 4, Red clip on PC 6
Use Pachi-Pachi to spark along the length of the cords without touching them or the clips.
*From Emilie Connor Handout

Kawais Method
Master Kawai also used normal ion pumping cords, but in a slightly different way. While Manaka used
cords to connect points on the same side of the body, Kawai crossed the cords in an infinity treatment.
The first cord is connected to (L) PC 6 with the red clip and (R) Sp 4 with the black clip.
The second cord is connected to (R) LI 4 with the black clip, and the red clip is attached to (L) St 40 (or St
41)
Use Pachi-Pachi to spark along the length of the cords without touching them or the clips.
