THIRD SEMESTER B.TECH FIRST INTERNAL EXAM 2017

ME 205: THERMODYNAMICS
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Time: One hour Maximum: 20 Marks

PART A (5 marks)
1. The temperature t on a thermometric scale is defined in terms of property K by the
relation , t = a*ln (K) + b
Where a and b are constants. The value K is found to be 1.83 and 6.78 at the ice point
and steam point, temperature of which are assigned the numbers 0 and 100
respectively. Determine the temperature corresponding to a reading of K equal to 2.42
on thermometer. (3 marks)
2. What do you meant by free expansion work. (2 marks)
OR
3. Explain Concept of Continuum (2 marks)
PART B (Answer any two questions, 8 marks)
3
4. 0.05m of a certain fluid at 10 bar is contained in a cylinder behind a piston. Calculate
work done by the fluid when it expands reversibly
a) at constant pressure to a final volume 0.2m3.
b) according to the law PV=C to a final volume of 0.2m3
c) according to the law PV3=C to a final volume of 0.006m3.
5. Derive the steady flow energy equation (SFEE) for a single stream entering and
single stream leaving a control volume.
6. How does the Bernoullis equation compare with SFEE?
(2*4=8 Marks)
PART C (Answer any one, 7 marks)
7. Air flows at the rate of 0.5 kg/s through an air compressor, entering at 7 m/s velocity,
100 Kpa pressure and 0.95 m3 / kg volume and leaving at 5 m/s velocity, 100 Kpa
pressure and 0.95 m3/ kg volume and leaving at 5 m/s , 700KPa and 0.19m3/Kg. The
internal energy of the air leaving is 90KJ/Kg greater than that of the air entering.
Cooling water in the compressor jackets absorbs heat from the air at the rate of 58
KW. (i) Compute the rate of shaft work input to the air in KW and (ii) Find the ratio
of the rate of shaft work input to the air in KW and (ii) Find the ratio of the inlet pipe
diameter to outlet pipe diameter.
8. In a gas turbine installation, the gas enters at the rate of 5 kg/sec with a velocity of 50
m/sec and enthalpy of 900KJ/Kg and leaves the turbine with 150 m/sec, and
enthalpyof 400 kJ/kg. the loss of heat from the gases to the surroundings is 25 kJ/kg.
assume R =0.287kJ/kgk , Cp = 1.005 KJ/KgK and inlet condition to be at 100 KPa
and 270C. Determine the Power output of the turbine and diameter of inlet pipe.
