The document describes using dramatization to teach students the scientific method. It outlines an experiment where students test whether an egg will float in water or salt water. The lesson engages students by having them dress as scientists and work through each step of the scientific method. This includes asking a question, making a prediction, gathering materials, recording procedures and observations, and stating a conclusion. The purpose is for students to learn and apply the key elements of the scientific method in a hands-on experiment.

The Scientific Method
Content: Basic structures and functions of body systems
Curricular Competencies:
Make observations in familiar or unfamiliar contexts
Identify questions to answer or problems to solve through scientific inquiry Make predictions about the findings of their inquiry With support, plan appropriate investigations to answer their questions or solve problems they have identified Use equipment and materials safely, identifying potential risks Communicate ideas, explanations, and processes in a variety of ways Learning Intention: I can use the scientific method to plan or follow an experiment Materials: Scientist costumes, 3 jars, water, salt, spoon, paper strips for each element of the scientific method, flip chart paper, markers, attached scientific method template Method: Dramatized model Example Experiment: What liquid will the egg float in? 1. Come into classroom, dressed as scientists. Have experiment materials laid out. Teacher 2: Why are you dressed like that? Teacher 1: Im a scientists? Teacher 2: Scientist? What do scientists do? (ask class) Teacher 1: Scientists ask questions *Put up question strip Teacher 2: Well I have a question, do eggs float? Teacher 1: Youre already thinking like a scientist, here put this lab coat on. Pull out egg* Well what do you think will happen? Teacher 2: I float in the swimming pool, do you think the egg floats in water too? Teacher 1: Is that your hypothesis? *Put up Hypothesis strip Teacher 2: Whats that? Do any of you know? Ask class* (if class doesnt know ask teacher) Teacher 1: What kind of things are we going to need for the experiment? Teacher 2: Well a jar, some water and an egg Teacher 1: Okay we need to add those things to our materials *Put up materials strip Teacher 1: So what is the first thing we need to do for our experiment? Teacher 2: we need a glass of water (ask a student to fill a jar with water) Teacher 1: okay whats next? All of these steps are what make up our procedure *Put up procedure strip Teacher 2: well that didnt work so maybe we should try adding some salt. Teacher 1: okay, but add it to our materials Teacher 2: should we be writing down what happens? Teacher 1: yes! That is what the observations are Put up observation strip Teacher 2: okay what do we do at the end? Teacher 1: we make a conclusion *Put up Conclusion strip Teacher 2: what is a conclusion? Ask class* Teacher 1: So what is our conclusion? Teacher 2: why do we have to do the scientific method? Teacher 1: well there are a few reasons, one reason is so that we can document everything we did and share our experiment. Did you know that for an experiment to be valid it must have to be able to be done more than once and have the same results? If we fill out a scientific method form, somebody else can try our experiment, and we can try someone elses. 2. Hand out scientific method template 3. In groups assign students a section and have them write a definition for one of the boxes 4. Share fill in the rest of your sheet The Scientific Method Question:
