    Capstan lathes are lighter duty machines used for shorter workpieces up to 60mm in diameter. The turret head mounts on a movable ram, allowing only limited lengthwise movement. Turret lathes are heavier duty machines capable of machining longer workpieces up to 200mm in diameter. The rigid turret head mounts directly on the saddle and moves along with it, providing greater lengthwise adjustment during machining. Turret lathes can also move the turret head crosswise in some models and are suitable for heavier cutting operations due to their sturdier construction.
