Calculation for crack width for pilecap

Grade of concrete = 40 N/mm2

2
Modulus of elasticity of concrete = 28000 N/mm
Yield strength of seel = 420 N/mm2
2
Modulus of elasticity of Steel = 200000 N/mm
Maximum working tension in the section(serviceability) = 845 kN
Width of pilecap (b) = 1100 mm
Overall depth of pilecap (h) = 1400 mm
Area of steel provided (As) = 4418 mm2
Clear cover to tension steel provided (c) = 100 mm
Diameter of bar provided = 25 mm
Effective depth of slab c/s (d) = 1400-100-25/2 = 1288 mm
Spacing of steel (s) = 100 mm c/c
As per BS8110-2:1985 Design Surface Crack Width
Wcr = 3acrem/(1+2(acr-Cmin)/(h-x))
Where

x = depth of neutral axis. = 331.3 mm

fs = the tensile stress in the reinforcement.
2
=T/Ast = 191.192 N/mm
e1 = Strain at the level considered, calculated ignoring
the stiffening of the concrete in the tension zone.
e1 = (h-x)fs/Es(d-x) = 0.00107
em = average steel strain at the level considered,
e1 - b(h-x)(a-x)/(3EsAs(d-x)) = 0.00057
a = distance from the compression face to the point at
which crack width is being calculated, and = 1400 mm

acr = distance from the point considered to the surface

of the nearest longitudinal bar = 110.6 mm

W cr = Crack width = 0.186 mm

Allowable crack width = 0.200 mm HENCE SAFE
