1. Select the appropriate deficiency symptoms listed in Column 2 to match the food substances
given in Column 1. Put the appropriate letter(s) in the space provided. (3 marks)
Column 1 Column 2
A. reduced amount of red blood cells
calcium
B. poor healing of wounds
iron
C. poor vision in the darkness
vitamin C
D. muscle cramping
2. Disease X is caused by an autosomal gene defect. The pedigree below shows the inheritance of
disease X in a family:
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(a) Deduce whether the allele for disease X is dominant or recessive. Explain your deduction.
(Marks will not be awarded for genetic diagrams.) (5 marks)
(c) If individuals 6 and 7 are going to have another child, what would be the chance of the child
being normal? (1 mark)
(d) Disease X is fatal if left untreated. Explain why the allele causing such a serious disease is
not eliminated in the human population. (3 marks)
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(b) Name the type of joint involved in this reflex and the type of muscle which contracts to kick
the leg up. (2 marks)
(c) The following electron micrograph shows the junction between two neurones inside the
spinal cord:
4. The photomicrograph below shows the appearance of the epidermal cells of a plant after they
have been immersed in a concentrated glucose solution for 10 minutes. The cytoplasm of the
epidermal cells contains a red pigment.
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(a) With reference to the photomicrograph, draw a labelled high-power diagram of cell X in the
space below. (3 marks)
(c) One hour later, the cells in the glucose solution were found to restore their original
appearance. Account for this observation. (3 marks)
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(b) The following photomicrograph is a cross section made at the point of contact between the
two plants.
At the point of contact, dodder inserts a penetrating organ into the hosts tissues to suck
fluids from them. A and B are two branches of the penetrating organ.
(i) Into which tissue is each of the two branches A and B inserted? (2 marks)
(c) Dodders may attack some crops. It is found that if another crop is cultivated in rotation with
the affected crop, dodder can be eradicated. Explain this observation. (2 marks)
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(a) Which of these two plants is a moss? Give a reason for your choice. (2 marks)
(b) State one characteristic of the habitat of plant P. Explain your answer. (2 marks)
(c) Explain briefly why the reproductive unit of plant Q has a higher chance to develop into a
new plant successfully. (2 marks)
(a) Name structure B. Explain how it is adapted to its function in photosynthesis. (4 marks)
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
(i) Outline the pathway which leads to its production from carbon dioxide. (3 marks)
(ii) When light is blocked, the level of triose phosphate is found to decrease. Explain this
observation. (2 marks)

(a) State the contraceptive methods indicated by (4) and (5). (2 marks)
(b) Both method (2) and method (3) share the same principle.
(ii) Explain why method (2) is preferred to method (3) if the concept of safe sex is applied.
(1 mark)
(c) A man can be infertile if his sperm count is low. Suggest a technology which can be used to
assist his reproduction. (1 mark)

certain human organ.

(ii) In 2nd century AD, the Greek physician Galen believed that the heart did not pump
blood around, and the blood moved by the pulsation of the arteries themselves.
Based on the present biological knowledge, account for the pulsation of arteries.
(3 marks)
(b) William Harvey (1578 1657), an English physician, was the first known to describe
completely and in detail the circulatory system. At the time of Harveys publication, Galen
had been an influential medical authority for several centuries. Galen believed that blood
passed between the ventricles by means of invisible pores in the septum. According to
Galens views, the venous system was quite separate from the arterial system, except when
they came in contact through the unseen pores. Arabic scholar Ibn al-Nafis had disputed
aspects of Galens views. He stated that blood moved from the heart to the lungs, where it
mixed with air, and then back to the heart, from which it spread to the rest of the body.
(ii) Harvey had theorized the existence of capillaries; however, he was never capable of
understanding how blood passed from the arterioles into the venules. Harveys
discoveries inevitably came into conflict with Galen's teachings and his publication
incited considerable controversy within the medical community. Some doctors
affirmed they would rather go wrong with Galen than proclaim the truth with Harvey.
Elaborate on how the above example can be used to demonstrate the two aspects of the
