Dr. S. J. Chopra
Chancellor
I take great pride in this privilege to present the Twelfth Annual Report 2014-15 on the progress and
development of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES). A privilege passed on to
me by my predecessor & founder Vice Chancellor Dr. Parag Diwan, who successfully completed his
third term & has a lion share of the credit for the performance in the year 2014-15. It would be
appropriate to thank the entire UPES team for this splendid performance & my compliments to each
member of staff & student alike for their hard work. Even our alumni continue to make us proud
with their exemplary performance in the global arena.
UPES has been offering an ever expanding bouquet of undergraduate and post graduate programs in
Engineering, Management and Legal education with specialization in energy Infrastructure &
transport. In recent years UPES has ventured into IT as well as Design, and we have two schools
being nurtured under the college of Engineering. This year has seen starting of the two new areas
namely Public Policy & Administration and Planning &Architecture.
The quality of an academic institution primarily depends on the quality of its faculty. Our faculty has
always been our pride. We continue to have an optimum mix of qualifications, experience and
industry exposure and can be counted among the finest in higher learning institutions in the country.
The university has constantly been focusing on not only attracting exceptional talent but also
nurturing & upgradation of our existing talent pool. Many of our faculty members possess Ph.D
degrees in appropriate fields. The research output of our faculty as research scholars has been
showcased in the prestigious part reviewed Journals & conferences of repute. 89 Publications in
Scopus listed Journals and two more Indian Patents are the highlights this year. Further, we have at
present 20 projects with a total of funding of more than 20 crore rupees.
UPES has valued industrial exposure to its faculty & a unique endeavor Abhigyat or enlightened
is rolled out which creates an opportunity to gain insights and skills that enrich classroom teaching
through an industry attachment.
Our Students continue to do us proud by putting UPES name on the world map. I am unable to resist
the temptation to list some of them just to give a glimpse of things in store in the report here:
x SkyhawksteamofAerospacebaggingNASASystemsEngineeringaward,
x autonomousflightcapableParadroneUAVbyourresearchers
x Neha Chhabra Roys Doctoral paper in IIM Kozhikode, or the series of awards won by our Law
Studentsalloverthecountry.
x SumitShettyofCOMEShobnobbingwiththelikesofKevinSpaceyandJimCollinsatWorldBusiness
Forum
x Mooters Aditya Pillai and Nupur Priya of COLS winning the South Asian rounds and going
to participate in the International Rounds at Kings College London.
Sports has been ever better this year with basketball& cricket championships at RMLNLU, Lucknow
and we have done well in athletics too.
Special mention must be made about our Alumni Ms. Smiti Maini graduate of Aerospace
Engineering Department, for her contribution in the MARS MISSION.
The students continue to show exemplary discipline while maintaining a ragging free campus and
extra ordinary social awareness through road safety and anti-substance abuse campaigns. Records in
Blood donation continue to get broken year on year.
Addition of infrastructure continues to match the student growth. This year I am happy to report
College of Management has moved successfully into new premises in a 12 acre campus at Kandoli,
where 2 new boys hostels have also come up during this year. We are looking forward to moving
our College of Legal Studies also to the new campus next academic year.
I am very confident the report will make a very interesting reading and make all well wishers of
UPES feel proud of our progress and achievements.

The University has adopted Quality Assurance as a way of life since its inception. The University has recently
created a Quality Assurance Centre (IQAC) in the year 2014. A brief mission of this Centre is as follows:-
To develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic action to improved the academic and administration
performance of the Institution.
To promote measures for institutional functioning towards quality enhancement through internalization of quality
culture and institutionalization of best practices.
To conduct benchmarking studies
To develop a strong quality monitoring system
To get accreditation of the University and its Programs by renowned Natio
To foster Quality Culture at all levels thus ensuring quality as a way of life
The tenure of IQAC other than ex-officio members is 2 years. External Experts are invited as Special Invitees to
advice the Quality Assurance Cell.
During 2014-15, three meetings have been held (20th November 2014, 18th February 2015 and 2nd May
2015). The major recommendations of the IQAC implemented so far are as under:
1. Concurrent Academic Audit has been taken up at the department level.
2. Choice based Credits System
3. 10 point grading system
4. Online Alumni Feedback
x On Going Initiatives
a) College of Management
UPES has applied to International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (ICABE) for
accreditation of its following programs:
Based on their first visit to UPES, we have successfully completed Phase I and are now a candidate
for accreditation. It is expected that this process will be completed by 2017.
b) College of Engineering
UPES has applied to National Board of Accreditaiton (NBA) for accreditation of its following
programs:
(i) B.Tech (Applied Petroleum Engineering) with Upstream and Gas streatm specialization
(ii) B.Tech (Automotive Design Engineering)
(iii) B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) with specializationin Refining and Petrochemicals
The predominant objective of ISO driven system is continual improvement; through well-defined
processes, documentation of the processes, its effective implementation and continual feedback system to
further improve the effectiveness of processes and systems. In the context of the assertion made about the
predominant objective of the ISO Certification; it is essential to bear in mind that the documentation made
mandatory by these processes helped the university navigate through the accreditations both national
(NAAC) with ease. UPES accredited with ISO 9000 (QMS) certification in Aug. 2006 and subsequently
renewed in 2009 and 2012. The university also got accredited with ISO 14001:2004 (EMS) in Aug. 2012.
In essence, ISO process reflects how the institution is performing and provides a road map for improving
the system effectiveness. A few of the improvements that the ISO documentation has brought about at the
University over last few years are:

There has been all around improvement in financial and operating performance during FY 2014-15 as
compared to FY 2013-14 including 20% growth in on-campus students, 27% growth in new enrolments,
improvement in faculty to non-faculty ratio and improvement of surplus from 8% of revenues in FY 2013-14 to
13% of revenues in FY 2014-15.
The total receipts during FY 2014-15 were Rs.200.62 crores against total expenditure of Rs.174.03 crores
leaving a balance of Rs.26.40 crores for transfer to General Fund. The total surplus earned during the fiscal
was used to fund the capital expenditure incurred which was Rs.26.11 crores.
Efforts of the management in closely monitoring operating costs resulted in improving the surplus thereby
enabling UPES to invest in academic infrastructure including buildings, labs, classroom equipment and
repayment of term loans taken from financial institutions. There was significant increase in rentals during FY
2014-15 primarily due to launch of second campus at Kandoli wherein UPES has taken approx. 180k square
feet of BuA on long term lease.
Major part of the outstanding bank loan has been repaid and only Rs.5.75 crores is outstanding at year end
which has also resulted in decline in interest and bank charges during FY 2014-15
