Career Development Lesson Plan
Learning Objective(s):
Students will be able to identify their interests and connect them with a potential career.
Materials:
colored pencils/crayons (30), markers (60, 2 different colors per student), sheets of blank paper
(30), white board, dry erase marker
Procedure:
1. Do Now activityHave the students create a bubble chart of things they like using images or
words using colored pencils or crayons (10 min.)
2. Class discussionAsk the class about what they wrote or drew. Have some students share
their bubbles, providing clarification if needed (10 min.)
3. Group activityDivide the class into groups of 3 or 4. Have them use one colored marker to
connect interests to related ones by drawing a circle next to the ones that are different from
other students in the group, then use another colored marker to draw a star next to their top
favorite. If theres time, ask the students to discuss with their group members about what they
can do with their interests (10 min.)
4. Student reflectionStudents write 2-3 sentences about what they discovered or already
knew about themselves in regards to their interests. Ask them to mention what interests were
most unique in their group, which interest was their top favorite and why. The last sentence
should be about what they can do with their interests. The reflection is homework if it is not
completed. If there is time, have some students share their thoughts about what they learned
about themselves through the lessons activities (10 min).
Process Data:
There will be about 25 students in each class and the lesson can be given to grades 3, 4 and 5
Perception Data:
The bubble chart (pre/post group activity) lets students brainstorm and explore their interests
Outcome Data:
The student reflection will provide data on student interests and how they connected them with
their self and a potential future career
Follow Up:
Students who have not been able to note down interests and connect them with their
uniqueness, decide upon a favorite, or think about what to do with their interests show a lack
proficiency in the PA and ASCA student standards. They will then require additional support,
through group sessions (with other students who have not been able show proficiency) with the
school counselor so that they are able to express themselves more thoroughly and provide
feedback about the lesson.
