Long Quiz 2

I. Fundamental Concepts and Definitions (5 points each)

1. Differentiate the stresses in axially loaded members and in circular

shafts subjected to torque.
2. Differentiate the deformation in axially loaded members and in circular
shafts subjected to torque.
3. Describe/illustrate the deflection of springs arranged in series and in
parallel.
4. Illustrate/explain the requirements for beams to be said as fully
analyzed.

II. Problem Solving. Show solutions orderly and neatly. Outline solution
indicating concepts or formula.

(20 pts) Problem 1. The electric motor exerts a torque of 800 N- m on the
steel shaft ABCD when it is rotating at a constant speed. Design
specifications require that the diameter of the shaft be uniform from A to D
and that the angle of twist between A and D not exceed 1.50. Knowing that max
= 60 MPa and G = 77 GPa, design the diameter of the shaft. See Fig. 1

(30 pts) Problem 2. For the given shear diagrama. Draw the load diagram, (15
pts) b. Draw the bending moment diagram, c. Design for the cross section of
the beam if the allowable bending stress is 1.48 ksi. See Figure 2.

(30 pts)Problem 3. Determine (15 pts) a. the maximum value for both bending
moment, (15 pts) b. maximum shear for a set of wheel loads shown in Figure 3.
