OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this report is to check adequacy of 411-E10A/B Debutanizer Bottom Cooler for
Refinery Revamp Case using Process Simulation Software (Aspen HYSYS 8.4V).

INTRODUCTION:
The Gas Concentration Process Unit designed to recover C3/C4 LPG and to produce a stabilized
naphtha feed to the Naphtha Hydro treating Unit. The Gas Concentration Unit consists of the wet
gas compressor, the primary absorber, the sponge absorber, the stripper, and the debutanizer. In
Debutanizer section, LPG recovered from unstabilized naphtha and stabilized naphtha from
bottom of column 411-V7 passes through series of shell and tube exchangers to recover heat from
stabilized naphtha flowing towards NHT through 411-FV056 and towards tankage and 411-P6A/B.
The purpose of 411-E10A/B Debutanizer Bottom Cooler is to decrease temperature of Stabilized
Naphtha to Storage Tankage (945-TK46/48/52) from Stripper/Debutanizer Section using cooling
water in case of NHT U 200 Shutdown.
411-E10A/B Debutanizer Bottom Cooler is Shell and Tube Exchanger (AES) type installed in
series with countercurrent arrangement. Followings are process (Figure 01) and mechanical details
(Figure 08) of exchanger:

SIMULATION USING ASPEN HYSYS:
Aspen HYSYS is the industry leading simulation software for oil & gas, refining, and engineering
processes. Aspen HYSYS also integrated with Aspen EDR (Exchanger Design & Rating) to study
exchanger thermal and mechanical analysis. Followings are major features of Aspen HYSYS
Improve equipment design and performance
Monitor safety and operational issues in the plant
Optimize processing capacity and operating conditions
Identify energy savings opportunities and reduce GHG emissions
Perform economic evaluation to realize savings in the process design
Process Stream of Unstabilized Naphtha specified using design analysis of 411-SN09 i.e. Sp.
Gravity and Distillation D86. Aspen HYSYS automatically calculate other properties.
PENG-ROBINSON property package selected for hydrocarbon streams.
Process streams conditions and exchanger mechanical details provided and simulated using
Aspen HYSYS and EDR.

CONCLUSIONS AND RESULTS:

As per Simulation results of 411-E10A/B followings are conclusions:
As flow of stabilized naphtha to 411-E10A/B increases, outlet temperatures of CWR and
unstabilized naphtha increases linearly and vice versa while other stream specifications
remained same. (Figure 03 & 05)
As CW flow to 411-E10A/B increases, outlet temperature of stabilized naphtha and CWR
decrease linearly. (Figure 08)
As per REVAMP CASE II which was simulated at revamp conditions but cooling water
flow to 411-E10A/B increased to 750m3/hr from 667m3/hr. With increased flow, stabilized
naphtha outlet temperature decreased to ~40oC which is near to design storage
temperature of storage tanks and primary absorber lean oil temperature. Increased flow
also decreases CWR temperature to 47oC. (Figure 02 & 04)
With increased CW flow to ~750m3/hr, 411-E10A/B and with changes in operating
procedures as mentioned in recommendations is adequate for revamp conditions of GCU.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
411-E10A/B designed to decrease stabilized naphtha temperature to ~40oC for Tankage
and storage in case of NHT shutdown. Followings actions can be included in SOP for
above said case:
Divert Stabilized Naphtha from NHT to Tankage by gradually closing of 411-FV056
and opening of 411-FV058.
Increase temperature of 411-TIC060 Stripper Feed Temperature, so that maximum
flow of stabilized naphtha passes 411-E7 Stripper Feed Exchanger and decrease
Stabilized Naphtha to 411-E10A/B.
Maintain 411-TIC083 Debutanizer Tray 30th Temperature about 140~150oC.
Decrease GCU load in case stabilized naphtha outlet temperature increase beyond
50oC.
ACTION: PROCESS/TSD

Change in inlet and outlet piping size of CW to 411-E10A/B can increase exchanger cold
heat duty.
ACTION: TSD/ESD

Provide 411-E10A/B with backwash arrangement to increase exchanger performance and

schedule backwashing activity once in a week to ensure better performance in case of
NHT Shutdown.
ACTION: TSD/PROCESS
