The floating islands of Uros are located inside the bay of Lake Titicaca only 14 km away
from the city (20-30 minute trip). It is believed that the Uros were one of the oldest ethnic
groups that inhabited the Andean highlands region. Their survival depended on their skills
as fishermen and bird hunters. This group preferred to remain isolated from civilization on
the mainland.
The search of isolation was perhaps the reason why they chose to live in reed boats sailing
and in a primitive way. When the Spanish chroniclers encountered the Uros, in the late
sixteenth century, the Uros were still living on the lake in small rafts used as houseboats,
not wearing much clothing, wore long hair. It was only in the early 60s when the Uros
started to build small artificial islands for shelter. Today, rushes or reeds are still vital to the
Uros material. The reed is eaten and is a source of iodine, with reed rafts for fishing are
built, the houses are built, the animals are fed and used to make fire for cooking
Although many authors state that the ethnic group is extinguished Uros, a recent study of
the genetic structure of the Quechua and Aymara of Lake Titicaca Uros has found that
today still preserve part of the original gene from their ancestors (PhD Fujita and Sandoval,
2002). Today, thanks to the Uros who still live on these islands, we can imagine and
appreciate the lifestyle of such an ancient ethnic group. These Uros islands of fighting for a
better future for their children. The Classic has contributed much to its economy and many
of them are investing in the education of their children. Without the Classic, the Uro people
would not have many opportunities to progress. Young people go to primary and secondary
schools in Puno, some go to college and few are multilingual guides Classic. With more
education are likely to return to siguientesgeneraciones no longer live "floating islands".
