Ladies and Gentlemen,

My speech entitled Street Children .

What is street children? Street children is a term used to refer to children who live
on the streets of a city. They are basically deprived of family care and protection.
Most children on the streets are between the ages of about 5 and 17 years old, and
their population between different cities is varied.

What is the cause of children become street children? I will tell you, it is because
of mistreatment. Mistreatment to the child is the main reason why the child
become street children. This is consisted of physical and mental mistreatment.
Besides, street children generally emerged by the encouragement of economic
needs, that force them to work to help their family. This phenomenon is caused by
a vicious circle of poverty in developing country. In fact most of street children
have many complex problem. For instance they were brought to an institution
such as orphanage and for some reason they went back to the street. This is often
happened even if the institution has provided free school, free food, shelter. Why
is this happening? It is because of money. On the street, they can easily earn
money, which is approximately at the minimum of Rp. 20.000/day. It means in a
month they can earn at least Rp. 600.000. This amount is, of course, relatively
large for a child under the age of 18 years and live on the street.

Ladies and Gentlemen and all my friends,

As we know street children are scattered all over the world especially in
Indonesia. Their growth in Indonesia are increasing year by year especially in big
cities. Do you know the big city contains many street children? For example in
Jakarta, we can easily find street children in many places, such as on the streets,
railway station, market place, shopping centre, and even in mall. As some of us
already know, these people are well organized by very neat and professional
group, that often called street children mafia. Every member of the group have
their own specific job, for example beg to people passing the street. They are
taking the advantage of the children and use them as a business field. Even their
own parents approved this kind of situation, and their parents are playing a role as
part of street children mafia.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Street children population are increase and decrease. According to Indonesian

Social Department in 2006 street children population were 17,6 million, in 2007
the population increased rapidly to 37 million, in 2008 the population decreased to
34,9 million, in 2009 it decrease up to 32 million.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we know, street children also causing problem to the social environment. What
is the problem? Many street children reflect bad behavior in their daily life, it
influenced other children to be affected by them. Many street children become a
thief, an impostor, an object of sexual abuse, or causing trouble like street
fighting. But they are not the only one to blame, government suppose to have on
this matter. The government is too busy to their own affairs, therefore less
concerned about the street children.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We must do something to solve this problem. For example we can urge the
government as executive institution to eradicate poverty instead of eradicating the
poor. This can be achieved if the government can independently free from
intervention of foreign economic forces. And in the future street children will
gradually less develop in accordance with the development of the quality of life,
one of the way to increase the quality of life is to provide adequate education so
that in the future we can stand up straight and proud of what our country have
done for us.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

That is all from me. Hopefully it will be useful for all of us. Thank you very much
for your attention.
