1a) In this political cartoon, Calvin Coolidge is playing the saxophone while a
big business performs a lively dance. This symbolizes Coolidge giving
freedom to businesses in the pursuit of profits.

1b) The Fordney-McCumber Tariff Law protected domestic production from


foreign competitors, increased duties on farm produce, and promised a
degree of flexibility to farmers. This tariff gave farmers the same freedom
that Coolidge gave to businesses in the pursuit of profits.

1c) As a direct result of this policy, many European nations increased their
trade barriers. These barriers not only hurt American-made goods, but the
products of European countries as well. This circle deepened the
international economic distress.
