Kayla demonstrated professionalism and accountability as she arrived early to clinical every day
utilizing the electronic medical record Cerner to help prepare for report. Ms. Meester was
prepared and eager to learn and not afraid to take on any challenge presented to her. Kayla
completed 188 practicum hours in the ICU at Carondelet St. Josephs Hospital in Tucson
Arizona. Kayla protected patient privacy respecting HIPAA policies. Kayla maintained a
positive attitude during the clinical shift inspiring others.
Kayla demonstrated competency with assessments & skills as she provided care for 1-2 complex
patients per shift. Once aware of expectations, Kaylas confidence increased with each clinical
day always utilizing preceptor as needed. Ms. Meester made herself available for learning
opportunities as she observed an emergent intubation, a bedside bronchoscopy as well as
shadowed a clinical nurse leader in the ICU.
Safety was a high priority as medications were administered following all rights to medication
administration. Kayla learned to titrate medications in the ICU with preceptor supervision. Kayla
protected patient airways as she provided care for intubated patients. Infection control was also a
priority as Kayla followed central line policies as well as followed isolation protocols.
Kayla is continuing to develop critical thinking skills as she has had a variety of experiences
providing the plan of care for adults with: Sepsis, Pneumonia, COPD, Diabetes, Stroke, Drug
abuse, and end of life care just to name a few. Kayla was responsible for interpreting lab data as
she followed blood gas results, clotting factors, liver enzymes, cardiac enzymes, electrolytes, and
blood sugars. Abnormal results were reported to the appropriate discipline utilizing SBAR.
Kayla not only excelled with assessments and skills she was not afraid to demonstrate leadership
qualities. Kayla found time to assist RNs when own work was complete as she assisted with
chest compressions during a code as well as assisted with setting up all lines for a central line
placement. Ms. Meester developed an immediate rapport with patients, families, staff and peers.
Kayla is continuing to improve interdisciplinary communication skills as she has given handoff
report to RNs as well as utilized SBAR when communicating a concern to a physician.
Kaylas caring attitude and passion for nursing was demonstrated throughout the clinical
experience. I highly recommend Kayla Meester for a new graduate registered nurse position.
