n e w s p a p e r s a r e d e c l i n i n g i n s a l e s a n d Am a z o n . c o m i s s e l l i n g m o r e
electronic books compared to print books demonstrates the need
f o r d i g i t a l f l u e n c y, p a r t i c u l a r l y f o r c h i l d r e n w i t h i n t h e e d u c a t i o n
environment (White, 2013). School education has reacted to the
introduction of digital media with a number of innovative programs
s u c h a s E d u c a t i o n N e t w o r k Au s t r a l i a ( E d N A ) a n d t h e D i g i t a l
E d u c a t i o n R e v o l u t i o n ( D E R ) ( W h i t e , 2 0 1 3 ) . Tea c h e r s n e e d t o
d e v e l o p a d i g i t a l p e d a g o g y, t o e q u i p t h e m w i t h t h e s k i l l s f o r n e w
digital technologies and be able to operate these successfully in
the classroom (Howell, 2012, p.7).

T h e Au s t r a l i a n C u r r i c u l u m : D i g i t a l Tec h n o l o g i e s i m p l e m e n t s w o r l d
class curriculum to teachers to equip students for the challenges
o f t h e d i g i t a l e c o n o m y ( I n s p i r i n g a l l Au s t r a l i a n s i n d i g i t a l l i t e r a c y
and STEM, 2017). The Government is funding a national
competition Cracking the Code which will prescribe different
t yp e s o f c o m p u t i n g / c o d i n g c h a l l e n g e s f o r Yea r 4 - 1 2 s t u d e n t s . As
w e l l a s a c o m p u t e r s c i e n c e s u m m e r s c h o o l f o r u p t o s i x t y Yea r 9
a n d 1 0 s t u d e n t s , t o b e h e l d a n n u a l l y. T h i s w i l l h a v e a s p o t l i g h t o n
students underrepresented in STEM subjects (Science,
Tec h n o l o g y, E n g i n e e r i n g , a n d M a t h e m a t i c s ) ( I n s p i r i n g a l l
Australians in digital literacy and STEM, 2017).

Digital media and the internet have greatly transformed the way in
which people access information and communicate with each
o t h e r. C h i l d r e n u n d e r t h e a g e o f f o u r t e e n s p e n d t h e m a j o r i t y o f
their time accessing the internet for educational activities (White,
2013). With technological advances, there have been new styles
of learning introduced. Game-based learning and interactive and
immersive learning are areas that are growing (Parkinson, 2015).
While it is important to be digitally fluent, students need to be
e d u c a t e d o n t h e i m p o r t a n c e o f c yb e r s a f e t y. I m p o r t a n t i s s u e s t h a t
n e e d t o b e a d d r e s s e d i n c l u d e c yb e r - b u l l y i n g a n d c y b e r - s t a l k i n g
(White, 2013).
