ASSIGNMENT 1CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

1. Differentiate between the volute casing and vortex casing for the centrifugal pump.
2. Obtain an expression for the work done by impeller of a centrifugal pump on water per
second per unit weight of water.
3. Define the terms: suction head, delivery head, static head, manometric head.
4. What do you mean by manometric efficiency, mechanical efficiency, overall efficiency of
centrifugal pump?
5. Define specific speed and NPSH of a centrifugal pump and derive an expression for that.
6. How the model testing of the centrifugal pumps are made?
7. What is cavitation and what are its effects? How will you prevent the cavitaion in
hydraulic machine?
8. What is Thomas cavitation factor for reaction turbines and centrifugal pump? Explain.

ASSIGNMENT 2CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

1. A centrifugal pump is to discharge 0.118 m 3/s at a speed of 1450 rpm against a head of 25
m. The impeller diameter is 250 mm, its width at outlet is 50 mm and manometric
efficiency is 75%. Determine the vane angle at the outer periphery of the impeller.
2. A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner diameter and
running at 1000 rpm works against a total head of 40 m. The velocity of flow through the
impeller is constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The vanes are set back at an angle of 40 degree
at outlet. If the outer diameter of the impeller is 500 mm and width at outlet is 50mm,
determine (i) vane angle (ii) workdone by impeller on water per second, and (iii)
manometric efficiency.
3. A centrifugal pump is running at 1000 rpm. The outlet vane angle of the impeller is 45
degree and velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s. The discharge through the pump is 200
liters/sec when the pump is working against a total head of 20 m. If the manometric
efficiency of the pump is 80% . Determine (i) diameter of impeller (ii) width of the
impeller at outlet.
4. Show that the pressure rise in impeller of centrifugal pump when frictional and other
losses in the impeller are neglected is given by ,
1/2g [Vf2+u22-Vf22cosec2]
Where Vf1 and Vf2 are velocity of flow at inlet and outlet,
u2=tangential velocity of impeller at outlet and = vane angle at outlet.
5. Prove that the manometric head of a centrifugal pump running at speed N and giving a
discharge Q may be written as:
Hmano= AN2+BNQ+CQ2: Where A,B,C are constants.
6. A one fifth scale model of a pump was tested in a laboratory at 1000 rpm. The head
developed and the power input at the best efficiency point was found to be 8m 30 KW
respectively. If the prototype pump has to work against a head of 25 m, determine its
working speed, the power required to drive it and the ratio of the flow rates handled by
the two pumps.
