PARENTING: NOT JUST A STROLL IN THE PARK

PURPOSE: To have awareness on the difficulty of parenthood


INTRODUCTION:

1. PROPER PREPARATION FOR PARENTHOOD IS A PRE-REQUISITE


(Rom 8:18, 20-21); 2Cor 4:17
a. Prepare to take up duties and responsibilities
1. Food, clothing and shelter
2. Health
3. Education
4. Christian training
b. Prepare for pain and suffering
1. Financial requisite
2. Disobedience, lack of respect and appreciation (from
children)
3. Fears (worries and anxieties regarding future of children)
4. Sickness (trials, illness that may arise in the family)
c. Prepare for the influence of the world
1. Vices ( different vices that may corrupt the minds of our
children)
2. Peer pressure (from friends)
3. Worldly lifestyle (influence by environment like gadgets,
etc)

2. PARENTS ARE COMMITTED TO LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY (1 Cor.


13) (loving the children like the love of God)
a. Importance of love : In provision, Discipline and guidance of
children
b. Impeccability of love
1. In relation to child Love is PATIENT, KIND and not
ENVIOUS
2. In relation to parent Love is NOT BOASTFUL, PROUD AND
SELF-CENTERED
3. In relation to sin Love is NOT QUICK-TEMPERED,
RECORDING WRONGDOINGS, GLAD OVER
UNRIGHTEOUSNESS AND LIES
4. In relation to situation- Love BEARS, BELIEVES, HOPES
AND ENDURES ALL THINGS
c. Invincibility of love ( Love of parent should be:
1. Love is PERMANENT
2. Love is COMPLETE (AGAPE)
3. Love is GREATEST

3. PARENTS ARE EXPECTED TO MEET GODS STANDARDS (Col. 3:


1-21) God is the true parent of our children and parents are
only stewards of their children; thus, parents are to meet the
standards of their master (God)
a. Seek Gods will: God is the true parent of our children, we are
mere stewards
b. Be a godly parent
1. What to put off : immorality, idolatry (vices), anger; malice,
slander, foul language
2. What to put on: compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness, patience, forgiveness, love, thankfulness and
word of God.

c. Build godly relationships with spouse and children.


1. Loving relationship between husband and wife:
-Husband love wife and never treat her harshly
-Wife submit to your husband
2. Loving relationship between parents and children
-Parents dont provoke your children
-Children obey your parents

4. PARENTS MUST DISCIPLINE THEIR CHILDREN (Disciplining is a


hard task)
a. God as Father disciplines his children
1. He disciplines those whom he loves (He allows
sufferings and pain)
2. He punishes those he accepts as a child (look at
Jesus) kung papaano nag suffer (Jesus, sinless
but was punished for the salvation of humanity)
b. Be a disciplined parent first
1. Follow Gods discipline
2. Be a credible disciplinarian
3. Put on endurance ( needs consistency in
applying discipline)
c. A balancing act
1. Discipline is unpleasant & painful but leads to
righteousness
2. Tough loving must be combined with tender
loving care
3. It must be motivated by love not anger

5. PARENTS MUST TEACH BY BEING ROLE MODELS( Titus 2:1-15)


a. Parents are to be role models:
1. Father should be looked up to on how to be temperate,
worthy of respect, self-controlled, and of sound faith
doctrine.
2. Mothers should be looked up to on how to be respectful,
positive towards children and to become the light of the
home.
b. Parents are to catechize/pass the faith to their children (Det :
4-25)
1. They should teach children what God has done and
motivate them to become grateful children.
2. They should teach what they should do for God and to
motivate them to respond to His love and commands
3. They should teach them to follow Christian family tradition
4. They should do it in every teaching opportunity in day to
day living (in every gathering of the family)
c. Parents are to exercise their God-given authority to:
1. Encourage childrens Godly virtues and
2. Rebuke childrens wrongdoings.

CONCLUSION: LOVE NEVER FAILS
