Course Outline Assignment Part I

Course Analysis
Course Name: Intermediate French II
Course Length: 9 Weeks
Course Type: Online

Average Student:

Lower Level Undergraduate College student with beginning knowledge of the


French language acquired from successful completion of Pre-Requisite FR101
or passing score on placement test. Possible familiarity with other foreign
languages. Students may not have experience with online format for a
course.

Content Analysis:

Students should be familiar with basic conversational French. This course


is a continuation of development of skills in speaking, reading, writing and
understanding conversational French. (Learned in Pre-Requisite
FR101)
Students should have basic technical computer skills, such as the ability
to login to the online class, use a webcam, microphone and speakers.

Students should have basic skills in using programs like Microsoft Word
and Power Point or an equivalent presentation program, such as Prezi or
Google Slides. (Assumed General Information)
Students will need to be self-motivated as all course work, quizzes and
tests are completed online.
Students will be required to use Blackboard and youtube. Students will be
required to verify technical compatibility with their equipment for both
sites.

General Goals:

Learn information related to French culture through videos, readings and


virtual sessions.
Develop communication skills.
Learn vocabulary relating to familial relationships, professions,
recreational activities, finances, cultural attire, life stages, research,
technology, the sciences and current events.
Build on skills using French language structure including expressions,
opinions, pronouns and irregular re verbs, as well as comparatives and
superlatives, past, present and future and discussing hypothetical
situations.

Enhancing Learning:

This course is designed to expand on acquired knowledge and skills relating


to the French language such as reading, writing, speaking and understanding
the language. The course will provide opportunities to converse with native
French speakers about cultural aspects like family relationships, professions,
personalities and past times. Students will need to dedicate sufficient time to
this course in order to successfully gain the skills intended. Students will only
be as successful as the dedication they make to this course. Upon
completion, students will be able to hold moderate level, everyday
conversations with native French speakers and intermediate level French
language learners.

General Course Assessments


Weekly Multiple Choice Self-Tests (9): The weekly multiple choice self-tests
will measure ability to recall vocabulary, key concepts, cultural facts,
grammar and other information covered each week.

Multiple Choice Unit Exams (3): These exams will be cumulative and will
include information from the three modules most recently covered. The tests
will measure the mastery of the content covered and will demonstrate that
students can correctly apply the information learned.

Discussion Board Postings: This assessment will demonstrate a students


ability to communicate in the target language in written format, explaining
situations, sharing anecdotes, posing questions and responding to fellow
students.

Global Collaboration Project: This assessment will have the students


collaborate with a native French speaking class to share knowledge about
culture, professions, lifestyles and past times of French people. The
culmination of this project will be to perform a simulation job interview in
French where the students will perform as both interviewer and perspective
employee. This will demonstrate that students can communicate using key
terminology and correct pronunciation. It will also demonstrate the students
ability to listen and understand spoken French.

Virtual Sessions/Partner Sessions: Students will participate in two whole-


group virtual sessions. The whole group sessions will provide information and
introduction to the Interview assignment. Students will participate in three
partnered virtual sessions. The partnered sessions will allow students to
complete the Interview activity.

One Minute Speeches (3): This activity is intended to allow students an


opportunity to demonstrate and practice speaking in the target language
using correct terminology, grammar and pronunciation during virtual sessions
with immediate feedback from the instructor or as a recorded submission
where feedback from the instructor will be provided in a timely manner. This
will also allow the instructor to ensure students are not falling behind or stuck
on any topics.

Feedback Survey: This survey will provide an opportunity for students to


explain what they liked or didnt like about the course, point out concerns or
offer suggestions for improvement.

Weekly Participation/Motivation Self-Grade: As this is an online course, this


assessment will provide students with the opportunity to self-assess the
amount of effort they are putting into the course. Students will give
themselves a grade based on the amount of effort they feel they put forth
each week. The goal of this assessment is to keep students thinking about
their effort and participation and help to motivate them to stay on task and
invest in their own learning.

Course Outline - Objectives


Module 1: Course Introduction/Shopping (Week 1)
Objectives:

Identify types of stores and storekeeping professions in France.


Conjugate and use irregular and regular verbs.
Describe products sold in French markets.
Apply various interrogative expressions to ask questions.
Use comparative adjectives to describe things.
Differentiate using demonstrative adjectives.

Module 2: Travail (Week 2)


Objectives:
Discuss health-care professions and responsibilities.
Identify trades.
Describe specific jobs.
Write a classified advertisement
Apply direct and indirect object pronouns.
Use imperative mode.

Module 3: Cinema (Week 3)


Objectives:

Identify important facts about French films.


Apply vocabulary associated with French cinema and theater.
Describe and express opinions on movies using comparative and
superlative adjectives.
Compare and contrast French and American culture as portrayed
through film.
Demonstrate correct use of negative nepas.
Conjugate verbs in recent past tense.

Module 4: Ville (Week 4)


Objectives:

Define vocabulary associated with housing, urban and rural living,


housework, rooms, furniture, train travel and geographic attributes.
Identify French housing types.
Describe an ideal home using key vocabulary.
Apply appropriate vocabulary to describe activities, customs and
traditions of a French village.
Compare and contrast city living and country living in France.

Module 5: La Sante (Week 5)


Objectives:

Define vocabulary associated with French food, nutrition and social


practices.
Compare and contrast American and French eating habits.
Explain typical French physical activity and healthy habits.
Conjugate pronominal verbs in past tense and various tenses and
modes.
Describe French daily routines.
Indicate vocabulary associated with illnesses, symptoms and remedies.
Module 6: Vacance (Week 6)
Objectives:

Define vocabulary associated with vacation destinations and travel.


Recognize correct prepositions with place names.
Explain imperfect tense.
Identify unique aspects or cultural elements of France.
Apply vocabulary to describe historical, geographic and religious
influence on French traditions.

Module 7: La Mode (Week 7)


Objectives:

Apply key vocabulary to describe seasonal French attire.


Use demonstrative pronouns.
Describe French influence on world fashion.
Correctly use expressions of time.
Describe appropriate attire for different social situations.
Identify key individuals who have influenced French fashion.

Module 8: Musee DArt (Week 8)


Objectives:

Define vocabulary associated with visual arts.


Identify key French artists.
Describe the history of the Statue of Liberty using key terminology.
Correctly use negative expressions.
Disseminate specific information from a French news article.
Use relative pronouns to describe paintings.

Module 9: Rites De Passage (Week 9)


Objectives:

Define vocabulary associated with life events.


Identify characteristics of childhood and adolescence in France.
Conjugate irregular and regular verbs in simple-future tense to
describe plans for the future.
Apply key vocabulary to describe a French rite of passage such as
acquiring a drivers license.
Compare and contrast typical French and American traditions.

profession once in English and again in French in the
same post. This is the only post that will allow English.
All other posts will be solely in French.

This is an amusing video of an American boy in France.
The episodes detail his learning of French language and
culture.
This episode pertains to shopping and the names of
clothing items.

Module 2: Travail

This episode pertains to work.

This response will be a simple acknowledgement of one
classmates post. The response will be in French and
consist of at least three sentences.

o Collaboration Virtual Session 1 (Meet the collaborating
class/choose partners)
Students from this class will be joined in the session with
students from the collaborating class. Students will be
given the opportunity to pair-up. If students are unable to
attend the session, a partner will be chosen for them and
they will be notified. Students who do not attend the
virtual session will be required to view the recorded
session and submit a one page summary.

Students can choose whatever they want to speak about
for one minute in French. It is suggested that they
associate it with any problems they are encountering or
questions they may have.

will be able to watch as many or as few as they
choose, to get an idea of what French cinema is.

We will discuss the interview process, interview questions
and interview answers. Students who do not attend the
virtual session are required to view the recording of the
session and submit a one page summary.

Students will enter a virtual session with their partner to
get started on practicing the interviews. Students will
compile questions and practice answering. Students will
use this session to work out any technical issues and get
used to the moderating side of virtual sessions. (FINAL
INTERVIEW DUE IN MODULE 9)

the assignment for grading.
