FUEL CELLS IN SMART GRIDS: EV INFRASTRUCTURE

Focused Questions:
Can some fuel cells adjust their output power to follow load changes while
paralleling with utility or while isolated from the utility during an outage?
ANS. Yes to both. The Model 400 is capable of adjusting its power output up to
50kW in 5 second steps.
Are fuel cells capable of providing reactive power to help manage power
factor?
ANS.The Model 400 is capable of operating at power factors between 0.85 and 1
and can generate up to 249kVAR to help offset a facilitys demand for reactive
power from the utility.
Open Ended Questions:
What are some ways fuel cells can support microgrid infrastructure?
ANS. CHP, grid independent capability, kVAR generation, deployment flexibility,
etc.
What are some synergies between fuel cells and the deployment of smart
grid infrastructure?
ANS. Stable generation source, microgrid building block, etc.
