Aztec Research Project

The Aztec Empire was started in 1325 when Tenochtln was settled by the Mexica, which

were the first people that spoke Nahuatl, the native language of the Aztecs, that settled in

Mexico, and ended in 1521, when the king of the Aztecs surrendered to Hernan Cortes, a Spanish

conquistador, and Tenochtln was destructed. The Aztec Empire was located in central Mexico,

and that is also where Tenochtln was located. Throughout the history of the Aztec Empire, there

has been 11 different rulers. The most recent one was named Cuauhetemoc, who was hung by the

Spaniards when Hernan Cortes took Tenochtln from the Aztecs. The first emperor was chosen

by no method in particular, but the ones after him were just chosen from a group of high ranking

nobles. Their government functioned as a monarchy, in which the emperor was the primary ruler.

The Aztec government was very centralized. Aztecs practiced a Mesoamerican religion, and

Mesoamerican religions practice human sacrifice in connection to religious festivals, held

according to patterns of the Aztec calendar. The Aztecs worshipped the sun god, Huitzilopochtli,

who was also used as the god of war. The Aztecs had many advancements and inventions,

including universal education, which was not common at the time, popcorn, chocolate, chewing

gum, and advanced medicines. The Aztecs spoke Nahuatl, and this language quickly spread

through Mexico. The Aztecs had a very wealthy economy, along with a strictly hierarchical

economy. People on the lower end of the social ladder were treated as servants that worked for

priests and nobles. The middle class had jobs that consisted of farming, hunting, craftsmen,

construction workers, along with merchants and artisans, who typically had the most wealth out

of all the working class. The servants in the lowest grouping in the Aztec caste system were

treated as slaves, in that they were owned by the nobles and priests, who were the wealthiest in
the Aztec social ladder. The Aztec culture definitely laid a foundation for following cultures in

Mexico, and left footprints that cannot be erased.
