Investigations in Science 7 March 10, 2017

What we did this week:

We started off the week by learning about DNA, what it is made up of and what
scientists use it for. We looked at how DNA makes up genes, which makes up
chromosomes, which is found in the nucleus and found in the cell.

Tuesday we had our assessment on sexual vs. asexual reproduction.

Wednesday we completed a lab where we extracted DNA from a strawberry. Some

students mentioned that they had done this lab before and had some experience with how
to complete it. When students saw the DNA, many students said it looked like mucus. I
have uploaded some photos on my class blog.

On Thursday, we conducted a lab to see evidence of DNA in our cells by using calf
thymus. The calf thymus was blended with prep buffer and strained (Mrs. Lazarick-Ward
drew the short end of the stick and got to use her blender ;). Pictures are on my blog).
Then I added the thymus solution to micro tubes and used a centrifuge (spins it around) to
create the nuclei pellet. We then added different chemicals to the pellet to break it down
and extract the DNA strand.

Today, we will be finishing up both labs that we completed on Wednesday and

Thursday. Afterwards, we will be starting an introduction on genetics so that students
are prepared for next week.
