Investigations in Science 7 - March 10, 2017 What We Did This Week
We started off the week by learning about DNA, what it is made up of and what
scientists use it for. We looked at how DNA makes up genes, which makes up
chromosomes, which is found in the nucleus and found in the cell.
On Thursday, we conducted a lab to see evidence of DNA in our cells by using calf
thymus. The calf thymus was blended with prep buffer and strained (Mrs. Lazarick-Ward
drew the short end of the stick and got to use her blender ;). Pictures are on my blog).
Then I added the thymus solution to micro tubes and used a centrifuge (spins it around) to
create the nuclei pellet. We then added different chemicals to the pellet to break it down
and extract the DNA strand.
