Investigations in Science 7 February 19, 2016

What we did this week:

This was a very exciting week for the 7th grade students. On Wednesday,
we conducted 3 different mini labs that focused on the nervous system.
Lab #1 - Counting Numbers - Students were given a sheet with numbers in bubbles
out of order. Students had to try to see how high they could count, in order
(pointing to the numbers as they find them) in a 45 second period. They conducted
5 trials and averaged their results.
Lab #2 - Where did you come from, where did you go? Where did you come from
Cotton Eye Lab? - Students put on goggles and their partner threw 10 cotton balls
gently at their eyes. Students tried not to blink to control their reflexes.
Lab #3 - Reaction Time - One student dropped a meter stick unexpectedly while
the other partner tried to catch the meter stick as quickly as possible. They
measured the distance on the meter stick that their hand traveled until they were
able to catch it to measure their reaction time.
I have a feeling, your child told you about what we did on Thursday and
Friday. But if you havent heard, we dissected a sheeps eye. In order to learn how
your eye works, we dissected it to see the different parts. Students were amazing
during the dissection. Some students that were skeptical of the dissection,
became our team captains and read the procedures to the groups so that the
members of the group, knew exactly what to do. I have uploaded photos from
every lab group on my class blog. Some of the students mentioned to me at the
end of the class how much fun it was even though they were the most scared
initially.

Announcements:

*This was in last weeks newsletter but the informational meeting date was
changed due to the honor roll celebrations at lunch the same day of the meeting:
Extreme Outdoor Ed Field Trip is soon approaching. This is a field trip that is
optional for all grade levels. We typically have between 20-25 students from
Farquhar attending. We do have a limit on students. Students will be traveling to
Smith Island, found in the Chesapeake Bay. The field trip is scheduled to be April
20-22. The program is run by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and is a fantastic
program. It is extremely hands on and there is lots of time spent outdoors
learning about the Chesapeake Bay. This is an excellent experience for your child.
I have attached an informational sheet. I have been on this trip twice and plan on
attending again this year, along with Mr. Green. If your child is interested, have
them attend the informational meeting at lunch next Thursday in Mr. Greens room
(room 5). This really is, a once in a lifetime experience.
