FOUR YEAR B.TECH. DEGREE EXAMINATION - APRIL 2016.
Question No. 1 carries 10 marks and remaining questions carry 15 marks each.
(e) If liquid limit is 60% and plastic limit is 35% what is its plasticity Index
2. (a) Obtain relationship between bulk unit weight, dry density and water
content. (1)
(b) A borrow area soil has a natural water content of 10% and bulk density
1.80 Mg/m3. The soil used for an embankment to be compacted at 18%
moisture content at a dry density of 1.85 Mg/m3. Determine the amount
of water to be added. to t.0 m3 of borrow soil. How many ms of excavation
is required for 1.0 mB of compacted embankment? (8)

D. (a) State Stokes iaw. What are the assumptions and limitations? (7)
(b) The Atterberg's limit of clay soii ate liquid limit = 75yo, plastic
Iimit = 45o/s and, shrinkage iimit = 25%. lf the sample of this soil has a
volume 30 cm3 at the iiquid limit and a volume of 16.6 cm3 at the
shrinkage limit. Determine specific gravity of soi}, shrinkage ratio and
volumetric shrinkage. (8)
5. (a) Write Boussinesq equation and write the assumptions made. (7)
(b) A fa[ing head permeability test carried on 15 cm long clay sample. The
diameter of the clay sample and stand pipe was 9.8 cm and 0.75 cm
respectively. The level of water in the stand pipe dropped from 60 cm to
45 cm in 12 cm in 12 minutes. Determine.:
(r) permeability in m/day and
(ir) time required for level to 10 cm. (8)
7. (a) Define cornpaction. Discuss the effect of compaction on soil properties. (7)
