Light and Life
With February gone the cold dark winter months are behind us at last!! How we
have longed (well I have) for the warmer days of Spring bringing with them light
and new life.
But it seems to me that it's not only the weather that has been cold and dark
lately. The world seems to be a more unstable and darker place than ever before.
We are witnessing massive movements of people around the world, continuing
wars in the Middle East, terrorist acts and threats, Brexit, and now, to cap it all,
Donald Trump!
What on earth does the future hold for us?
We all long for a brighter, safer future for ourselves, for our families, our children,
grandchildren and indeed for the whole world. But there is so much uncertainty
and insecurity. Is this something new, or has it always been like this? The world
has been through troubling times before and come out the other side but now,
somehow, the stakes seem so much higher. Donald Trump has been described
as the most powerful man on earth heaven help the world!
I offer you some thoughts to reflect upon this month as we travel through Lent.
Lent covers the weeks running up to the poignancy of Maundy Thursday and the
pain of Good Friday before the joyful celebration of Easter Day. Lent is a good
time to slow down and 'take stock'.
Christmas has long gone but back in Jesus' day the first Christmas life was
pretty difficult then too. The people were surrounded by soldiers, crushed and
oppressed by a new and Mighty Power the Romans. Everyday life was a
struggle for ordinary people and the future must have seemed bleak.
Into that uncertainty came Jesus quietly and almost unnoticed well it's true, a
handful of shepherds noticed and a few wise men from the East but practically
everybody else missed this world changing event. The arrival of the 'Light of the
World' come to save the world bringing light and new life. The mighty power
of God at work on earth! There is no greater power than this and Jesus' power is
still alive. It is a different kind of power, it is not power over people but the power
to love all people and help them to love one another 'as He has first loved us'.
Jesus came to show us a different way; a way based on love, peace and justice
for all; and if the world is to be a brighter and safer place for all of us to live in then
perhaps His Way is the one to try. It's not easy but then He never said it would
be!
Some final words in a famous quote from G K Chesterton to ponder on this
month:
"The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been
found difficult, and left untried".
Much Love Revd Jane

Grimston May Bank Holiday

Art Exhibition.

Norfolk Creative Arts would like to invite artists to exhibit in an exhibition of local
talent, similar to the exhibition previously run by St Botolph's church in Grimston.
The Exhibition will run from Tuesday 25th April until the Bank holiday Monday on
the 1st May. As the exhibition will be in the school, it cant be as big as when it

[email protected] to receive an application form. The closing date

Vacuumers Wanted Urgently

St Botolphs Church needs volunteers from the community to assist in keeping

the church vacuumed and clean. The current church population is now mostly
elderly and there has been attrition because of ill health. The church is a very
valuable asset to Grimston so I m hoping that a few people could find an hour
every 2-3 months to give a hand with the vacuuming roster. The more people that
volunteer, the less the work. Please phone Judith Gough 01485 609217 or email

1917 Another Year of War. Continuing stories of the village Fallen of WW1
Many of the men who were conscripted in 1916 had their first real taste of
combat at the beginning of 1917 and in the village the year began with two more
deaths.
Ernest Mayes - January 16th 1917

Ernest was the third of six boys in the Mayes Family. When war broke out he was
already married he had married Clara Rudd in 1913 and by 1915 they had a new
baby daughter. Ernest's younger brother George had been killed in July 1915 and
Ernest joined up in the spring of the following year before he was conscripted. Ernest
enlisted in King's Lynn and he initially joined the Norfolk Regiment. Having arrived on
the Western Front in the autumn of 1916 he was transferred to the 1st
Cambridgeshire Regiment and sometime thereafter he joined an attachment to a
tunnelling company of Royal Engineers. The tunnellers were men recruited for their
knowledge of mining or quarrying but alongside the skilled men the engineers had
"attached infantry" acting as 'beasts of burden'. These men, including Ernest, would
have been fetching and carrying the many essential elements of mining
paraphernalia, pumping air and water and removing spoil the earth produced by
the digging of the tunnels. It is not clear whether these men were volunteers or were
chosen, nor whether they were paid extra as the miners were. In January 1917 the
1st Cambridge were in various sectors of the front line or in the Canal Bank dugouts,
the cold and damp weather was a constant. The tunnellers were busy digging a
series of mines under the German lines and it was during this time that Ernest died. It
seems that he died from some kind of chest or heart problem or from the respiratory
diseases such as influenza, tuberculosis, pleurisy and pneumonia which were rife in
the trenches. When he became ill Ernest was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station
at Lijssenthoek, just five miles from the Cambridgeshire's base at Branhoek. He may
have died before he arrived and he is buried here. Clara received a letter from one of
his officers explaining this we were returning to a rest camp when your husband
complained of difficulty in getting his breath. On reaching camp he received medical
attention but he passed away during the night, it may well be some comfort to you to
know that he was well spoken of by his comrades and NCOs.

We have photographs of Ernest. Please get in touch if you are related.

HAY FEVER

The hay fever season will start soon, so be

prepared.

Order your repeat prescriptions

If you have previously had a prescription for hay fever
treatments, you do not need to make an appointment to
obtain further supplies. Written repeat prescription
requests should be sent to the dispensary.

Prescription costs
Over-the-counter nasal sprays usually cost about the
same as a prescription charge. A month's supply of
antihistamine tablets usually costs substantially more
when bought over-the-counter than they cost on
prescription

Start treatment for hay fever early

All treatments work better if started before the onset of
the hay fever season late March or early April is a
sensible time to start.

Greenfingers - February

Julia Stafford-Allen gave a comprehensive illustrated talk on the National Garden

Scheme: private gardens on public view. Norfolk gardens raised 110,000 in
2016, the National Garden Scheme raised 2.7 million. The main beneficiaries
were Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Nurses, Hospice UK, Carers' Trust,
the Queen's Nursing Institute, Parkinsons UK and the MS Society. This money is
raised by private garden owners and volunteers who are generous with their time.
The NGS Yellow Book of gardens to visit is now available at all garden centres
and tourist offices.
Members were reminded to sign up for the Spring Show and Supper on April 11th.
Suggestions were invited for a local charity to support in 2017.
A Plant & Cake Sale will be held on May 27th in the Village Hall from 10 till 12.
Plant of the month winners were:
1st Margaret Gladman 2nd Sabrina Root 3rd Jenny Haywood

The next meeting will be on March 14th when Hugh Lanham will be speaking
about Getting more food from your garden.
All visitors are most welcome.

Remembering at Easter

Lilies will once more be a central part of the Easter flower decoration in Grimston
Church. If you would like to sponsor the cost of a lily in memory of a loved one or
loved ones, please let me know by March 31st at the latest, as they have to be
ordered from the nursery.
A list of all who are remembered in this way will be displayed in church during the
Easter period.

The estimated cost will be 2.50 per lily.

Donations to the flower fund are always welcome.

Grimston Eye

I don't know if is my imagination but the odd times I go into Lynn, as I walk along to my
destination, most people seem to have the world on their shoulders. The only smile is
in a shop from the lady behind the counter.
How different it is back at Grimston! Again many smiles from the ladies behind the
counter - yes I know that there I'm recognised, but whenever passing someone
outside there's always a smile and a greeting such as, "How are you?" Better still,
when passing a young lad I'd never seen before, he gave me a huge smile that really
made my day!
The Post Office is a good meeting place to go shopping; nearly always you can meet
somebody there whom you have not seen for a while and who is happy to stop and
have a chat. I hope you will agree with me that Grimston is a very friendly village.
Have you been along Lynn Road recently? It made me think.......

PAST.............. the SRV garage

PRESENT....... no more to be seen, just heaps of soil

FUTURE..........?????????????????

St Andrew's Church Pews for sale

Congham Church has 4 oak choir pews which are in need of new homes.

After receiving approval from the Diocese of Norwich, these 4 choir pews have
been replaced by 4 pews taken from the back of the church giving a large area
suitable for social events. All the pews which now remain in the church were
commissioned by the Everard family in memory of loved ones killed in the Great
War.

If you are interested in the choir pew(s) please contact the Churchwarden, Helen
Lilley on 01485 600153, for more information and to arrange a viewing. All
reasonable offers will be considered

Kings Lynn Hospital League of Friends

This year we raised the wonderful total of 1688.92, which is almost the same
amount as we raised last year.
Thank you once again for your continued support and generosity. It is nice to
know we help contribute to an ever increasingly bankrupt NHS and to buy
equipment for our local hospital, which ultimately helps us all.
Thank you, of course, to the collectors, that goes without saying.

The Last Word

I made it clear that I would be faithful to my promise. So one Member of

Parliament said when interviewed as to why she had voted against the Brexit
motion. Very commendable, I thought. How many promises do politicians make
and never keep them once in power.

It took my mind back to a small and yet important promise I had made a good
while ago. As a young bachelor, back in the days when it was acceptable to refer
to oneself as a bachelor, I promised my landlady that I would pay for my room and
lodging every Friday. Sometimes it was inconvenient in days when ATMs were not
on every high street, but as far as I can recall the promise was kept.

More recently I was on a flight to Yanji City, Gilin Province, NE China with my
wife. The flight was fine, but we were a little anxious having not heard from our
host for many weeks that he had received our flight details. All was well as we
saw his smiling face in the arrivals hall. Why didn't you confirm your flight details
with me, he said chiding us gently? It was clear our confirming emails hadn't got
through, probably blocked by the Chinese government. The President of the
University we were visiting announced with a smile on his face, I told my faculty
members that if an English man says he is arriving on a particular flight, you can
be sure he will arrive!

But I wonder sometimes these days if such confidence is a thing of the past. We
now have media programmes explaining exactly what faked news is all about.
Some actions are justified as post truth. Newspaper editors will publish an article
knowing it is rumour more than fact, either to sell more copies or push a political
bias. There are scams galore, with all kinds of blocking devices on phone and
computer.

Haven't these sort of things always being going on? Well yes and no. The point is
that the assured grounds of truth are becoming no longer foundational to the
British way of life. The government gives the impression of wanting to rewrite the
code of behaviour with what is termed British Values. Some forces are at work
casting off the mooring ropes, and it feels as a nation we are drifting out to sea,
and with no one at the helm knowing where we will end up. I doubt it will be
paradise and someone needs to take a firm hold of the wheel.

The sadness is that some are glad that the mooring ropes have been cast, and
now anything and everything is valid. But if everything is valid, then nothing is
true truth, and we really are at sea.
