DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
MID TEST 1 (Descriptive)

SUB: Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery Class: EEE (II. B.Tech) Ist sem-A&B sections

Duration: 2 Hrs Date: 06/11/2013(FN) Marks: 20M Roll No:

1. A) A 150mm diameter of vertical cylinder rotates concentrically inside another cylinder of diameter 151mm,both the cylinders are
of 250mm height. The space between the cylinders is filled with a liquid of viscosity 10 poise. Determine the torque required to
rotate the inner cylinder at 100 rpm.
B) calculate the pressure due to a column of 0.4m i) water ii) an oil of Sp. Gravity 0.9 iii) mercury of sp. Gravity 13.6. Take the
density of water as 1000 kg/m3.
2. A) Derive the equation of Continuity for 1-D flow of an incompressible fluid.
B) a pipe of diameter 30 cm carries water at 20m/s. the pressure at the points A,B are given as 34.335N/m 2 and 29.43 N/m2, while
the datum head at A&B are 25m&28m.find the head loss between A&B.
3. A) In a 2D incompressible flow, the fluid velocity components are u= x-4y; v= -y-4x.show that velocity potential exists and
determine its form. Find also the stream function.
B) Derive Bernoullis equation from Eulers equation of motion along straight line.
4. A) Derive the Darcy-Weisbach equation.
B) Pipes of 500 mm diameter, 1800 m length, 400 mm diameter, 1200 m length and 300 mm diameter, 600 m length are connected
in series. If the pipes are to be replaced by an equivalent pipe of 400 mm diameter, what would be its length?
5. A) Derive expression for rate of flow in case of VENTURI METER.
B) Derive an expression for force exerted by a jet on stationary inclined plate.
