PRACTISING ACTIVE LISTENING


STEP 1: Pay careful attention to the other person.

Stop wanting to control the conversation.
Put your preconceived ideas aside and be open to what the other person has to say.

STEP 2: Ask the right questions.


Ask different kinds of questions:
Use open questions to encourage people to think.
Use closed questions to get people to act.

 se upwards-oriented questions that refer to values and aspirations.

Use downwards-oriented questions that refer to what has already been done (concrete facts).

STEP 3: Allow people to express themselves, and give them feedback.

Dont interrupt the person who is speaking to you.


Avoid questioning what they say.
Give them time to calmly frame their ideas so they can answer clearly.
STEP 4: Identify the signals.

Pinpoint words that give you the signal to speak again:


- In the end
- Finally, to sum up
- In fact

STEP 5: Rephrase.
Rephrasing allows you to:
Show the other person you are paying attention and actively taking part in the conversation.
Confirm that youve understood what has been said.
Reassure the other person by giving them the feeling that you understand them.
Give them the opportunity to clarify things.
Encourage them, where necessary, to focus on a particular point.
