In confusing texts
it is difficult for
me to find the
meaning or lesson
behind the story.
For example, in
Of Mice and Men
there were many
lessons. It was
difficult to find
one that had the
most importance.
Criteria 1Reading:
Cite strong and
thorough textual
evidence to
support analysis of
what the text says
explicitly as well
as inferences
drawn from the
text.
Criteria 2Writing:
Introduce precise
claim(s),
distinguish the
claim(s) from
alternate or
opposing claims,
and create an
organization that
establishes clear
relationships
among claim(s),
counterclaims,
reasons, and
evidence.
In confusing texts
I have trouble with
this standard. In
Cask of
Amontillado the
style of writing
was hard to
understand.
Criteria 3Reading:
Analyze how an
authors choices
concerning how to
structure a text,
order events
within it (e.g.,
parallel plots), and
manipulate time
(e.g., pacing,
flashbacks) create
such effects as

mystery, tension,
or surprise.
Criteria 4Speaking
/Listening:
Come to
discussions
prepared, having
read and
researched
material under
study; explicitly
draw on that
preparation by
referring to
evidence from
texts and other
research on the
topic or issue to
stimulate a
thoughtful, wellreasoned exchange
of ideas.
I feel that I am
able to meet this
standard. I am
able to assess a
text, evaluate
whether the claims
support the thesis,
and whether the
reasoning is
relevant.I can also
tell if a text is
opinionated and
bias. For example,
from the essays in
this unit, I was
able to determine
their opinion of
the concept of the
United States.
Criteria 5Reading:
Delineate and
evaluate the
argument and
specific claims in
a text, assessing
whether the
reasoning is valid
and the evidence
is relevant and
sufficient; identify
false statements
and fallacious
reasoning.
I feel that I am
able to respond to
different
viewpoints. I feel
that I am also able
to change my
plans according to
new evidence that
is presented, and
support other
views.
I need to improve
upon my public
speaking. While I
do think I
improved on this
topic based on
past experiences, I
feel that I can
eventually become
comfortable
speaking to an
audience.
Criteria 8Writing:
Develop claim(s)
and counterclaims
fairly, supplying
evidence for each
while pointing out
the strengths and
limitations of both
in a manner that
anticipates the
audiences
knowledge level
and concerns.
Criteria 9Reading:
Determine a
theme or central
idea of a text and
analyze in detail
its development
over the course of
the text, including
how it emerges
and is shaped and
refined by specific
details; provide an
objective
summary of the
text.
Criteria 10Writing:
Develop and
strengthen writing
as needed by
planning, revising,
editing, rewriting,
or trying a new
approach,
focusing on
addressing what is
most significant
for a specific
purpose and
audience.
I feel that I
exceeded the
requirements for
this standard.
During the TKAM
Essay, I chose one
of the most
challenging
prompts given. I
feel that I
succeeded in
writing an essay
that wasnt timed.
I was able to put a
great amount of
time and thought
into its
components. I
think I chose the
most significant
claims for the
prompt I chose. I
took into
consideration the
audiences prior
knowledge to the
topic I discussed.
