THURSDAY DECEMBER 8

Well what an enjoyable event last Thursdays barbecue on the

beach turned out to be. The setting was great, the weather
fine, and the sunset magnificent. And we had our own master
barbecue chefs (gender neutral term as there was a squad of
them) on hand to produce a terrific spread. But if course we
need to thank Adrian Culshaw for getting it all together. This
could become an annual fixture. A bonus was to have two
guests there, Bridget Hage and Chinmay Ananda, who we
hope to see again soon.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 15

An event during the week that ten of our members attended

was the breakfast put on by Sandringham Rotary at the Sandringham Yacht Club with Lindsay Fox as guest speaker. The
event was a fund-raiser for The Rotary Foundation, which as
many of you know, celebrates its 100th anniversary next year.
From the reports I have received Lindsay was well worth the
admission price even if the breakfast was a little indifferent.
There are two events on this week-end that are definitely worth
a mention. On Saturday morning, we have the Farmers Market, Heather Chisholm is as usual looking for volunteers so
please advise Heather if you are available. We will be adding
a touch of Christmas to the event with special issue of hats.
Please remind your family, friends and acquaintances that the
market is on and that it may be a good place to find an interesting present for someone.
The second event, which again involves Heather, is the official
opening of the Community Garden on Sunday. The garden is
situated at the back of St Stephens Church on the corner of
North Road and Cochrane Street, Brighton. The event starts
at 11:30 with a blessing by the vicar Roger Prowd and will run
through to 3pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, and plants
and preserves for sale. Come along and see how far the garden has progressed.
A plug for our last meeting of 2016. It will be on Thursday 15th
December at the Victorian Golf Club who has always looked
after us very well at Christmas.. It will be a partners night and
guests will be very welcome, though we will not be having a
formal meeting. Instead we will be having a Christmas Party
complete with games and prizes. And as Chris DArcy has

mentioned in his reminder email, a Kris Kringle. So come

along and enjoy a fun night before we take a break.
Our meeting this Thursday is a regular meeting back at
the VGC after three weeks away. But it promises to be a
very interesting meeting because we have as our guest
speaker Tony Atkinson who has led quite an extraordinary life. He recently published his memoirs in a book
entitled A Prescribed Life, which one of our members
has described as un-put-downable. So come along and
hear Tonys story and maybe get some insight into the
Royals that only an insider can provide.

Yours in Rotary

Fellowship Event 13 April 2017

Who wrote it?

We have reserved a block of seats for The

Book of Mormon at the Princess theatre on
Thursday 13 April.

If youre a South Park fan, the biting satire in

the musical will seem familiar.

We need to pay for the seats by the end of

February and will start marketing them early in
the new year.
The Book of Mormon, a satirical musical about
religion that sold out on Broadway for 180
weeks in a row, is coming to Australia.
The runaway hit will open at Melbournes Princess Theatre in early 2017, giving Australian
audiences a chance to see the whip smart humour that won the musical nine Tony awards.
Heres what you need to know.
Whats it about?
The musical follows two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Kevin Prince and Elder Arnold
Cunningham, who travel to remote Uganda to
share their scriptures.
The village they visit is under the control of a
brutal warlord and the locals are far more concerned about issues like poverty and AIDS than
what the two missionaries have to say.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the two men responsible for creating the long-running adult
animation, started working on the production in
2003.
Having both grown up in Colorado surrounded
by Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the pair were
well-versed in the religion.
The pair workshopped the script with producer
friend Scott Rudin and created the music with
composer Robert Lopez.
The show premiered on Broadway in March
2011.
What do the critics say?
The New York Times Ben Brantley said The
Book of Mormon restored his faith in musicals.
This is to all the doubters and deniers out
there, the ones who say that heaven on Broadway does not exist, that its only some myth our
ancestors dreamed up, Brantley wrote.

I am here to report that a newborn, oldThe musical explores the concept of faith, with fashioned, pleasure-giving musical has arrived
creator Matt Stone describing it as an atheists at the Eugene ONeill Theater, the kind our
grandparents told us left them walking on air if
love letter to religion.
not on water.
The Washington Posts Peter Marks was similarly inspired, writing: Dont believe what they
say. Money can buy happiness. Its yours for
the price of a ticket to The Book of Mormon.

OVERWHELMING NATURE
Look closely: Theres more to
this image than the frothy,
rushing waters of the Columbia River Gorge and velvety
green of the forest. Two
bright kayaks are on the river, dwarfed by the surroundings. "This shot took a lot of
planning and coordination,"
Your Shot photographer Karim Iliya writes. The kayakers
had to hang out in an eddy
and try not to move while I
took long exposures with a
drone. It needed to be at
twilight so the light was balanced, which meant we only
had one attempt."
