Fluvanna SPCA Summer 2010

2010 Annual Fund Campaign

UVa

The Fluvanna SPCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare agency that provides temporary shelter
and care for the communitys homeless dogs and cats until good homes can be found for them.
The FSPCA also provides animal pound services to Fluvanna County. A little over one third of our
annual operating budget is funded by the County, but for the bulk of our funding, we rely on fund-
raising events, grants, thrift store sales, adoption and boarding fees, and contributions from busi-
nesses and individual donors.

These funds are used to provide the animals with food, water, and medical treatment for a vari-
ety of health conditions such as heartworm, ringworm, mange, respiratory illnesses, and bone
fractures, in addition to routine vet exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries. Funds are
used to purchase equipment and supplies, maintain the building, grounds, and a vehicle for trans-
ports, and to compensate a small group of hard-working staff who are very dedicated to taking
good care of the animals. All of this was accomplished on a shoestring budget of approximately
$200,000 - less than $200 per animal!

Last year, nearly 1,000 cats and dogs were cared for at the Fluvanna SPCA. One hundred fifty
were happily reunited with their owners while 370 were adopted by new families. One hundred
sixty-eight were transferred to other animal rescue organizations that also provide adoption ser-
vices. Our increased focus on placing animals in forever homes helps to move us closer to our
goal of being a no-kill shelter.

How you can help:

Share our commitment to provide a second chance and a brighter future to the communitys ani-
mals in need by donating to the FSPCA Annual Fund. Every tax-deductible gift, no matter how
small or big, is important. We now have the ability to process automatic, recurring monthly
credit card donations, in addition to one-time donations. You may pledge your ongoing support of
$10, $20, or more per month by visiting our website www.fspca.org and clicking on Donate.

From the Board...

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your
continued support and dedication to our mission of helping the animals
of Fluvanna County. As many of you know, we are in a period of transi-
tion and are currently hiring a new shelter manager. We are excited to
enter this new chapter for the shelter and advance our mission as an
organization. Kevin

Volunteers are key to achieving our mission. We need your help with a variety of tasks from shel-
ter maintenance to assisting with adoption outings. My friend, Kevin, also would like more dog
walkers. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or stop by the
shelter to fill out a volunteer application.

Warmest Regards,
Leah - President, FSPCA Board of Directors

Success Stories!
Sake, formally Bonnie Blue, is enjoying life with her new family. She
Sake
likes to spend time in her cat ham-
mock and kitty condo.

Buddy, now Buddy Boy, loves to

spend time outside and watch the
neighbors cats! During a recent a
vet visit, they discovered that
Buddy Boy had been shot twice
with a BB gun. Fortunately, he is
now with owners who appreciate
his loving and gentle personality.

Small Gifts DO Make a Difference!

Six-year-old John Grebe can teach us all about giving and com-
passion. His family attended our recent pancake breakfast
hosted by Our Lady of Peace Retirement Community. Before
his family left for the event, John asked to take money from
his piggy bank. John selected 2 crumbled dollar bills and in his
innocent handwriting wrote, For the animals- Love John.

His gift may seem insignificant to some, but it is a reminder

that even the smallest donation can have a large impact.
Johns generosity and compassion shows that all of us giving a
little, whether it be a financial donation, fostering a litter of
kittens, or simply taking a dog for a walk on your lunch break,
makes an impact. Please give back to the four-legged members of our community volunteer,
donate, and care!

Thank You...
to Kim Bellone of Sir Speedy for her invaluable assistance with free printing of our newsletters,
event flyers, and forms.

to Plants N Things for donating the two potted plants currently in front of the building.

to Fork Union Animal Clinic for partnering with us for events and providing discounted medical
services for our animals.

to Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA for providing discount spay/neuter services.

to Calvin Bragg for arranging for VDOT to deliver mulch.

to Dr. Jim Starkey for volunteering his time to assess the medical needs
of our residents and assisting us with our rabies clinic.

Mothers of the Year

The kittens!
When you think of great mothers in history, Ethel Kennedy, Princess Diana
and Mother Teresa come to mind. Add Susie Q and Clara to that list.
Theyre not only taking care of their kittens, but both Moms are fostering
kittens from other litters. The two orphan kittens would have been bottle
fed, but Susie Q and Clara have stepped up to the challenge. It just goes to
show how much we humans can learn from our four-legged friends about
compassion and care for others. Stop by the shelter today to visit these in-
credible Moms and their adorable kittens.

Showing Some Heart

Jeremys story seemed destined for a sad ending until dedi-
cated volunteers and staff entered the picture. Jeremy is a 2-
year-old German shepherd who was diagnosed with severe
heartworm disease. Heartworm is easy to prevent with a
monthly pill, but many pet owners overlook this important
piece of animal care. Make sure to check with your veterinarian
about heartworm and flea/tick preventive!

Dedicated volunteers and staff didnt give up on Jeremy. They

are currently raising funds to help pay for Jeremys treatment.
Once its completed, he will go to a forever home with his new
family in Fluvanna County. If you would like to help contribute
Jeremy
to the Save Jeremy fund, please visit www.fspca.org and do-
nate to the medical fund.
