The Fluvanna SPCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare agency that provides temporary shelter
and care for the communitys homeless dogs and cats until good homes can be found for them.
The FSPCA also provides animal pound services to Fluvanna County. A little over one third of our
annual operating budget is funded by the County, but for the bulk of our funding, we rely on fund-
raising events, grants, thrift store sales, adoption and boarding fees, and contributions from busi-
nesses and individual donors.
These funds are used to provide the animals with food, water, and medical treatment for a vari-
ety of health conditions such as heartworm, ringworm, mange, respiratory illnesses, and bone
fractures, in addition to routine vet exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries. Funds are
used to purchase equipment and supplies, maintain the building, grounds, and a vehicle for trans-
ports, and to compensate a small group of hard-working staff who are very dedicated to taking
good care of the animals. All of this was accomplished on a shoestring budget of approximately
$200,000 - less than $200 per animal!
Last year, nearly 1,000 cats and dogs were cared for at the Fluvanna SPCA. One hundred fifty
were happily reunited with their owners while 370 were adopted by new families. One hundred
sixty-eight were transferred to other animal rescue organizations that also provide adoption ser-
vices. Our increased focus on placing animals in forever homes helps to move us closer to our
goal of being a no-kill shelter.
We rely on the support of members of the Fluvanna community to provide life-saving services
to the areas homeless animals. Be a part of our mission to find good homes for all healthy
and behaviorally sound shelter dogs and cats by adopting, volunteering, or donating today!
Volunteers are key to achieving our mission. We need your help with a variety of tasks from shel-
ter maintenance to assisting with adoption outings. My friend, Kevin, also would like more dog
walkers. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or stop by the
shelter to fill out a volunteer application.
Warmest Regards,
Leah - President, FSPCA Board of Directors

Volunteer Corner
Volunteers are an essential component of our success! We would like to highlight the contribu-
tions of two of our wonderful volunteers:
Deb Howe is one of our adoption outing leaders. She is dedicated to socializing our cats and has
fostered several animals until they can find their forever home.
Mike Hagar is a recent volunteer at the shelter. He assists staff with kennel cleaning and feed-
ings.
Joyce McCollough is one of our core dog walkers. She also assists with transporting animals to
local vet clinics and with laundry.
