2 Common ground Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
Dear Rosa,
I ran into Caitlin in the store yesterday. You remember Caitlin - from
high school? She asked me about you. We both said we'd like to get
together some time, but as neither of us had any recent news from
you, we don't know if you're still around here
So how are you? Do you still swim? Do you remember those awful
early morning practices in high school? Neither of us enjoyed them.
We both wanted to be in the cafeteria drinking hot chocolate! We used
to sit there after swim class and have long discussions about our
favorite bands. Neither of us liked the other's taste in music, though.
You said my music was old-fashioned and I said yours was too
strange!
Anyway, it was great to see Caitlin again, and both of us would love to
see you, too. How about meeting somewhere for a hot chocolate?

complained about your music? Would you apologize?

for that.
A Maybe we could go to the mall this afternoon.
B Sure. That'd be great. Then maybe we could go to a movie or
something.
A It would be great to win a million dollars.
B Definitely. That would be wonderful. You would never have to
worry about money again.
A One day, I'm going to learn to tango.
B Cool. That'd be fun. I probably wouldn't be very good at it,
though.

Unit 8 Lesson D Any regrets?

2 If I won the lottery, . . . Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
If I were a millionaire, I'd probably feel a little guilty. For example, I'd
feel guilty that I was so lucky when so many students I know are
struggling to pay for school. I'd probably offer to pay back some of my
friends' student loans or something like that. Then I'd definitely help
other people who need help before I bought a big house or a lot of
expensive clothes. I probably wouldn't need to buy those things
anyway. I know some people work hard for them, but I wouldn't want to
leave my neighborhood or change my personal style. Finally I'd
probably invest some of my money for a rainy day and use the rest to
support a good cause.

Unit 9 Lesson B How things work

4 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.
7. Can you explain to someone how to set up voice mail on
a phone?
I know how to set it up if you're using the same phone company I
use. You just dial the voice mail number and follow the
instructions.
8. Do you have any idea where to plug in the headphones
on your computer?
Yes, I know where to plug them in on my laptop. There's a place
to connect them just below the mouse pad.
9. Could you tell someone how to use your TV remote?
Well, I know how to turn on the TV and change the channels. I
don't know how to do much else, though!
Do you know how to look up information on the Internet?
Yes, it's easy to look up information on the Internet. You just
have to type your key words into a search engine.
Do you have any idea what to do when your computer
crashes?
If that happens, I write down the error message and call tech
support. I don't have any idea what to do myself!
Do you know how to change the password on your computer?
Yes, I know how to change it. I think it's important to change your
password every few months or so.

Unit 9 Lesson D Identity theft

2 Get rid of it! Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
How to use the Internet safely

The first thing you should do is strengthen your passwords. They

shouldn't be easy to guess, and they should include letters and
numbers. Second, don't give out your personal details (name, address,
phone number) to anyone online unless you know them personally.
Online identity thieves often try to get this information from people on
social networking and special-interest sites. Third, read all the terms
before agreeing to receive an online service. If you can't check a box
that stops you from receiving offers from other companies, you
probably shouldn't continue. Fourth, beware of "phishing" emails that
ask for sensitive information in order to solve a problem with your bank
account. Legitimate banks and companies will never ask you to
provide personal details or passwords in an email. Finally, make sure
that you are protected before you go online. Use Internet security
software to prevent viruses and spyware from infecting your computer.

Unit 10 Lesson A Catching up

3 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.
What have you been doing lately after class?
I've been going to a pottery class. I'm really enjoying it.
How many times have you gone to the movies this month?
I haven't even gone once. There's been nothing interesting in
theaters lately.
Who have you been hanging out with recently?
I've been hanging out a lot with my neighbor. We have a lot in
common.
How many times have you eaten out at a restaurant this week?
I've eaten out once or twice. I haven't gone out too often recently
because I'm trying to save money.
Have you been studying a lot recently?

Not really. I've been busy at work, so I haven't had a lot of time to
study.
How many phone calls have you made this week?
I've made too many to remember! Over 20 a day. I'm always on
my phone.
How many times have you overslept in the last month?
I've overslept a few times. Fortunately, I haven't missed any
classes, though.
What have you been thinking about for the last hour?
I've been thinking about the leftover pizza that's sitting in my
fridge.
How many books have you read this year?
I've read lots of books. I have a big reading list for my literature
class.
Have you been exercising lately?
No, I haven't been getting enough exercise, really. I blame the
weather! It's too cold and wet to go running.

Unit 10 Lesson B Movies

3 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
I really enjoyed Les Misrables. It's a musical, and it's set in France in
the 1800s. It's a story about a desperate man who breaks the law, then
escapes from prison and promises to be a good man. He rescues the
daughter of dying woman who becomes like a daughter to him. Hugh
Jackman plays the man who escapes from prison and Russell Crowe
is the police officer who chases him. I really enjoyed the movie. It has
wonderful music, and the costumes are amazing.

Unit 10 Lesson D Reviews

2 Music review Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
Even though Madagascar looks like a movie for kids, it's a move that
the whole family can enjoy. The animation and the voices of the main
characters are outstanding, and both children and adults will
appreciate the humor.
The story begins in Central Park Zoo. Although Marty the zebra is
comfortable there, he dreams of living in the wild. He tries and fails to
escape, but then he and his friends find themselves on a boat to
Kenya. Some penguins steal the boat because they want to go to
Antarctica, and Marty and his friends fall into the ocean. They end up
in Madagascar, and they learn to survive in a forest among lemurs and
other animals.
Madagascar kept me laughing out loud, and even if you're not a fan of
animated movies, you might want to see it.

Unit 11 Lesson A Speculating

3 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.
Where do you think he or she is right now?
It's Saturday afternoon, so my friend Josh can't be at work. He's
probably outside somewhere.
What do you think he or she is doing?
He could be playing golf. He's often on the golf course on the
weekend.
How do you think he or she is feeling?
He must be feeling pretty good. I heard he just got promoted!

What do you think he or she is wearing?

It's pretty cold outside, so he might be wearing a sweater. He
can't be wearing shorts - that's for sure.
Who do you think he or she is with?
He might be with his younger brother. I know he's home for
spring break.
What do you think he or she is thinking about right now?
There's a big football game on later. He might be thinking about
going home to watch it.

Unit 11 Lesson B Ups and downs

3 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.
You fail a test that you have studied very hard for.
I would feel disappointed if I failed a test that I thought I was prepared
for.
It might be embarrassing if my friends found out.
Your friend doesn't show up for a date.
I would get worried if a friend didn't show up for a date.
I might feel a little frustrated or annoyed if it were someone who's
always late.
You are home alone during a thunderstorm.
I might feel scared if the lights went out during a thunderstorm.
It could be exciting if there was a lot of lightning, though.
Someone is telling you a story you've already heard ten times.

I might feel bored or annoyed if someone told me the same story ten
times.
I would probably think that the person was very boring.

Unit 11 Lesson D Making an impression

2 My child is a prodigy! Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
Dear Editor,
I don't believe that the sidewalks in our town are as clean as they
should be. We regularly walk through litter from overflowing trash cans,
and some gutters are full of leaves. It's clear that the waste-disposal
company employed by the town is not doing a good job. In my view,
their contract should not be continued, and another company should
be hired to keep the streets clean. I feel that this should be done as
soon as possible. We certainly don't want tourists to develop a
negative image of our beautiful town.
Sincerely,
Concerned resident

Unit 12 Lesson A Local news

3 What happened? Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.
A downtown jewelry store was robbed between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
yesterday morning. Jewelry worth
$5 million was stolen from shelves and cabinets. A safe at the back of
the store was broken into and a large amount of cash was taken.
Computers and other electronic equipment were not stolen. A hammer
and a flashlight were found on the scene, and were taken away for
fingerprinting. Police officers were called to the store by the manager,
who arrived for work as usual at 6:30 a.m. The store was closed for the
rest of the day and employees were sent home.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Police

Department Robbery Unit at 555-749-0275.

birthday.

Have you heard about Gwen Stefani? She's singing on TV
tomorrow.
news about a family member
Did I tell you? My brother broke his leg playing soccer.
news about another city
You know what? New York City elected a new mayor.

Unit 12 Lesson D Reporting the news

2 News survey Activity C

Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

Class news survey
Five out of seven students in my class keep up with the news every
day, and about 20% of the students read the news only once or twice a
week. Three out of four classmates read printed newspapers, and
almost 80% of them read news on the Internet. National news websites
are the most popular places to get news online. Fewer than two out of
ten classmates surveyed said they read local news websites. The
majority of the students regularly read the international news, and
approximately 50% of the class is interested in the Arts and Leisure
section.
