Scope

This Linde Standard (LS) applies to suppliers of Package Units in gaseous oxygen service (GOX) and/or liquid
oxygen service (LOX).
It defines additional oxygen service related requirements for all kind of pressure accessories (e.g. process
valves, relief valves, instruments with pressure bearing housings), and related pressure accessory spare parts.

Additional requirements

3.1

Responsibility of the supplier

The supplier is obliged to ensure that his sub-suppliers implement the requirements of this LS.

3.2

Design

3.2.1 All oxygen exposed parts shall be chamfered/deburred.


3.2.2 The pressure accessory shall be designed to assure that no organic materials such as lubricants (oil and
grease) from outside the pressure accessory (e.g. from a gear box or from yoke sleeve) may penetrate to inner
surfaces in contact with oxygen.
3.2.3 Moving oxygen exposed parts like guides, bushings etc. shall be designed to be low-friction.

3.3

Materials

3.3.1 If not specified by the purchaser in detail, materials for oxygen exposed parts shall be selected for the
specified conditions under consideration of the minimum requirements in Table 1:

3.3.2 All non-metallic parts and lubricants in contact with oxygen shall be oxygen compatible for the specified
operation conditions. The oxygen compatibility shall be verified.
3.3.3 The use of lubricants on sliding surfaces is not permitted at operation temperatures below -30 C (acc. to
EIGA IGC Doc. 200/15).
3.3.4 It is the obligation of the manufacturer to select lubricants which are compatible for the application. The
use of lubricants shall be limited to a minimum.

3.3.5 A selection of suitable non-metallic materials and lubricants is given in Annex A.


Other non-metallic materials and lubricants may be used if the oxygen compatibility has been proven for the
specified oxygen operating conditions. Composites containing non-metallic material shall be tested as
compounds. Non-metallic materials considered for use in cryogenic service require a compatibility test for LOX.
NOTE

For the verification of oxygen compatibility e.g. the Bundesanstalt fr Materialforschung und prfung
(Federal institute for materials research and testing, BAM) in Berlin (Germany) or Wendell Hull &
Associates, Inc., Las Cruces, New Mexico (USA) are recognized as independent testing laboratories.

A lubricant is deemed suitable if the recorded acceptance pressure resulting from adiabatic compression tests
exceeds the specified operation pressure of the pressure accessory by at least 100 bar.

3.4

Review of documents

Before start of manufacture, the vendor of the package unit shall provide the following documents of the
pressure accessory manufacturers:

Cross sectional drawing including parts list

List of non-metallic materials and lubricants

Verification of oxygen compatibility in addition with information of trade name and respective
manufacturer for those non-metallic materials and / or lubricants not selected from Annex A

Cleaning procedure indicating sequence of cleaning, assembly, testing, cleanliness check method

The ITP shall show the following potential inspection steps for the purchaser:
Check of cleanliness of individual parts (prior to assembly) for pressure accessories in oxygen
service (= Linde intermediate inspection witness point)
Check of cleanliness, marking, and preservation of pressure accessories in oxygen service after
assembly (= Linde final inspection witness point)

Operating and maintenance instructions referring to oxygen related topics

3.5

Cleaning

3.5.1 All oxygen exposed parts shall meet the following requirements:
a) Hydrocarbon content less than 125 mg/m (free of unintended organics)
b) No accumulation of foreign particles > 1 mm, total amount less than 50 mg/m
c) All surfaces dry, no visible droplets of liquids or moisture. Also the packing foil has to be free of
droplets
d) No organic painting or coating of inner surfaces
e) Free of loose scale or corrosion residue
f)
Any cleaning agent which is used shall be completely removed prior to drying the surfaces
3.5.2 The cleaning method shall be described in a written procedure. Suitable cleaning methods are described
in Annex B. The solvent selected for cleaning shall not harm the pressure accessory materials.
3.5.3 Prior to application, the cleaning procedure shall be qualified in order to verify that the cleanliness
requirements will be fulfilled for the respective pressure accessory types.
It is not intended to verify the cleanliness requirements quantitatively for each pressure accessory.

3.6

Cleanliness inspection

All surfaces of oxygen exposed pressure accessories shall be subject to a qualitative cleanliness inspection.
Inspection shall be performed at least by the following test methods which are suitable for the valve type
concerned: Visual examination under bright light and "black light" (= ultraviolet light 320 nm to 370 nm). In
addition, wipe test inspection shall be performed with white, lint-free cloth or filter paper; aided by ultraviolet light
for areas which are not accessible for direct visual inspection.
Alternatively, solvent extraction test followed by weight determination of residue after evaporation of the solvent
may be used.
If any indications are found, their nature and their risk shall be evaluated. If this evaluation shows that an
indication is not tolerable, re-cleaning is required.

Marking

All pressure accessories shall bear a visible marking (e.g. tag fixed at the pressure accessory) as follows:
"Cleaned for Oxygen Service"

3.8

Preservation of cleanliness

Pressure accessories shall be protected against contamination or moisture by closure of openings, e.g. with
degreased plastic caps. They shall be packed individually, e.g. in a clean polyethylene tube or bag.
The preservation packing shall bear a well visible marking (tagged or printed) as follows:
"Cleaned for Oxygen Service".
For carbon steel pressure accessories, the interior of the sealed bag shall be equipped with desiccants.
In case desiccant bags are used for pressure accessories, the number of desiccant bags used shall be
indicated appropriately on the preservation packing.

3.9

Material receiving and storage

The supplier is obliged to ensure that the preservation packing will not be opened until the pressure accessory
is needed for installation.

3.10

Installation

Prior to installation the supplier of the package unit shall verify the cleanliness of the pressure accessory
according to Para. 3.6.

Documentation and certification

Along with the final documentation the supplier of the package unit shall provide the following documentation of
the pressure accessory manufacturer:

List of non-metallic materials and lubricants with information of trade name and respective manufacturer

Cleanliness check report shall be provided


for pressure accessories smaller or equal DN 40: Per cleaned and inspected cleaning lot
for pressure accessories larger DN 40: Each pressure accessory

Cleanliness report of sub-contracted parts (like gaskets, bushings, packing, bonnets)

Transport and storage instructions

List of non-metallic materials and lubricants


The non-metallic materials and lubricants selected in this annex are taken from the "BAM-List" (List of nonmetallic materials, DGUV Information 213-074 (former BGI 617-1), issue 02/2015).
NOTE: These materials are suitable for oxygen contacted parts used in Linde process plants.
The information bears no claim to completeness and does not free the user of responsibility for verifying it for
the specific application with the latest issue of the "BAM List" and the respective "BAM-reports".
The use of other materials is permitted if compliant with the rules stated in clause 3.3.5.
NOTE: Public material selection guidelines are given e.g. in EIGA IGC Doc. 13/12 or in ASTM G94.

Annex B

Cleaning and preservation methods


"Best practice"
B.1

General

Cleaning and preservation methods described below are recommended as "best practices" which should lead to
the required cleanliness. Other methods may also be applied when it has been reliably proven that the level of
cleanliness specified in this standard is achieved consistently.
NOTE

B.2

EIGA IGC Doc. 33/06, ASTM G93 or MSS SP-138 may also be used to define a suitable cleaning
procedure.

Surface cleaning from foreign substances

Use of oil free air is recommended to remove loose foreign particles

Blasting or pickling can be used to remove foreign substances from surfaces (rust, scale etc.)

B.3

Cleaning / degreasing with organic fluids

Organic cleaning fluids are suitable for cleaning and degreasing metallic surfaces. The following aspects have
to be considered:

Each component shall be cleaned prior to assembly

The cleaning fluid shall not alter the properties of the material to be cleaned; this applies especially for
non-metallic materials

Use halogenated organic compounds. Alternatively, isopropanol or acetone may be used

Safety issues shall be considered (emission limits, flammability, health hazards etc.)

If dampened cloths are used for cleaning, special care must be taken to remove organic contaminations
from surfaces to be cleaned rather than to distribute them uniformly

If a cleaning fluid bath is used, the fluid shall be renewed in a timely manner

The cleaned surfaces shall be dried carefully in order to evaporate all cleaning fluid residues

B.4

Cleaning / degreasing with aqueous fluids

Aqueous cleaning fluids with surfactants are suitable for cleaning and degreasing metallic surfaces. The
following aspects shall be considered in case of usage:

Each component shall be cleaned prior to assembly

The cleaning fluid shall not corrode the materials to be cleaned

The cleaning effect is highly dependent on surfactant concentration, temperature and mechanical
movement (use of ultrasonics, concentrated jets etc.)

Cleaning fluid baths shall be renewed in a timely manner

The cleaned surfaces shall be carefully rinsed with deionized water to remove all surfactant residues

After rinsing the component shall be dried carefully

B.5

Preservation of cleanliness

If preservation of cleanliness is carried out in accordance with clause 3.8 or in accordance with a standard
mentioned in clause B.1 (see note) then preservation is accepted.
