River Valley senior quarterback Elijah Alt totaled 232

yards of offense, ran for one
touchdown and passed for
another to lead the visiting
Blackhawks to a 217 victory
over Platteville Friday night
at UWPlattevilles Ralph E.
Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Alt, a converted running
back, rushed for 114 yards
on 27 carries and scored the
games first touchdown on a
1-yard sneak to cap a 15-play
game-opening drive. The senior signal caller also completed 6 of 13 passes for 118
yards and tossed a 30-yard
touchdown to Ryan Wickman
with 4:23 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 210.
River Valley improved to
61 overall and 21 in the
SWC and is now one win from
earning a postseason berth.
Meanwhile, Platteville fell
to 25 and 12 after struggling
with consistency on both sides
of the ball Friday night. The
Hillmen were held out of the
end zone until the final minute of the third quarter when
senior Cody Schambow tossed
a 19-yard touchdown pass to
sophomore Donovan Blevins.
While River Valleys defensive line limited the Platteville
offense to just 81 yards rushing on 25 carries, the Hillmen
were oftentimes their own
worst enemy, committing 10
penalties for 83 yards.
Its difficult enough to get
first downs and to stop the
other team from getting the,
but the penalties we sustained prevented us from

gave them multiple extra
chances with our defensive
penalties and hurt our offensive momentum with the offensive ones. Miscues such
as these in contests between
two evenly matched teams
can prove costly. Especially
when we were unable to take
advantage of River Valleys
miscues.
A pass interference penalty on 4th-and-1 at the Hillmen 8-yard line gave Valley
a new set of downs on the
games opening drive and led
to a score.
Platteville drove to the
Blackhawks 26 on its first
drive, but a fumbled snap,
an illegal motion penalty and
an incomplete pass ended the
drive.
Valley drove the length of
the field and took a 130 lead
on a 1-yard run by Hunter
Schwingle with 9:33 left in
the first half.

field goal to make it 150 at
halftime.
Valleys final score was set
up by a muffed punt at the
Platteville 26-yard line.
We knew it was going to
take all 48 minutes to win,
added Craig. We had our opportunities, on offense and defense, but did hurt ourselves
through penalties or the inability to finish a play. Were
not very far from winning this
game, or others in the past.
Its going to take some guts
from our leaders and playmakers to risk the possibility
of failure, rather than settling
for whats comfortable and
easily attainable.
Platteville must win its final two games to qualify for
the playoffs starting with Fridays road game at Dodgeville
(07, 03 SWC). The Hillmen
will host Lancaster (43, 30
SWC) to close out the season
on Oct. 16.
BENTON The third time

was a charm for the Potosi
volleyball team against Six
Rivers West co-leader Benton.
Junior Abby Kaiser returned to the lineup last
Thursday after missing the
previous two matches with a
knee injury to lead the Chieftains to a thrilling come-frombehind 2025, 1425, 2521,
2512, 1513 upset of the host
Zephyrs.
Kaiser slammed a teamhigh 17 kills and also posted
22 digs for victorious Potosi,
which rallied from a 20 deficit to knock off Benton for the
first time in three meetings
this season.
Kaiser is still limited and
sat out Saturdays tournament at Madison Edgewood,
but her play was a huge boost
for the Chieftains on Thursday.
Anytime you lose a starter

it affects everything to a
point; from there it is how the
team respond, said Potosi
head coach Ric Walsh. Abby
brings different things to the
team as everyone does. Its
always nice to have the full
squad on the court.
Senior Maddie Hawes
added 12 kills, 21 digs and
five aces for the winners.
Senior setter Calie Gibson
passed out 19 assists and
served up five aces.
Potosi (1110 overall) improved to 44 in league play,
while Benton (1551, 72
SRW) fell out of first place
with the loss and now trails
River Ridge (1511, 71) by
one half game.
This was the third time we
played them this year, and as
everyone knows that they are
very solid and well coached,
said Walsh. So when you can
come out with a win, it makes
for one happy team.
Potosi lost all four of its

matches and finished seventh at the seven-team Madison Edgewood Invitational on
Saturday.
The Chieftains return to
action Thursday at home
against River Ridge.
