Feldmans gem wasted as Yankees take 1-0 victory

NEW YORK If the

New York Yankees have
indeed lost CC Sabathia
for the remainder of the
season, they might have
found a reluctant leader in
Nathan Eovaldi.
Eovaldi matched Scott
Feldman with eight overpowering innings before
Carlos Beltran had a gamewinning sacrifice fly in a
wild ninth to lift New York
over the Houston Astros
1-0 Monday night.
The 25-year-old righthander was pitching
on the day the Yankees
learned Sabathia, the 2007
Cy Young Award winner,
was put on the disabled list
with right knee inflammation. New York had also just
come off a deflating series
in which they lost three of
four to Cleveland.
Of course its on my
mind, CC going down,
Eovaldi said. I know I
needed to be able to step
up tonight, help out the
bullpen.
With a devastating slider,
new-found splitter and
fastball that topped out at
101 mph and reached 100
in the eighth, Eovaldi gave
up only four singles and
walked three. He is 13-2

race doesnt usually involve
practicing survival skills
unless the Zombie Fest 5K Fun
Run is on the calendar.
Scheduled for a 7 p.m. start
Sept. 5 at MacLean Park in Lake
Jackson, the fourth annual
event will also feature a costume
contest.
Most of the races around the
area are run in the early morning, except for a couple. One of
them is the Zombie Fest.
We are trying to make this
one a bit more extra special,
race director Leslie Bateman
said. We are doing half of it on
the trail itself, not the asphalt
part at MacLean Park but there
is a trail that runs parallel to it.

VOLLEYBALL
In her second season at the
helm for the Columbia Lady
Neck volleyball squad, Katy
Wagner is trying to make a
difference.
So far, so good this season, as
the Lady Necks are 10-5 early
in the 2015 season.
They are doing great, I didnt
lose a lot so my new kids are
starting to step up and mesh
well with the others, Wagner
said. My libero, Taylor Murphy,
shes been doing a real good job
and my middle blocker, Macie
Grizzle, has also been doing a
good job in the middle for us.

kills every match so far.
Columbia is led by seniors
Celeste Loughman, Chantel
Ward and Laci Hambalek who
have been in the program the
past few seasons.
The Lady Necks are coming
off a consolation showing at the
Ganado Tournament last weekend. They finished with a loss
to District 27-4A rival Wharton,
25-23, 24-26, 29-30.
It was very competitive,
Wagner said. They played a
great game and so did we, but I

OBrien names Hoyer as Texans starting QB

By KRISTIE RIEKEN
Associated Press

HOUSTON Now that

hes been named Houstons
starting quarterback Brian
Hoyer knows hell have
to continue to perform to
keep that job.
Hoyer had been competing with Ryan Mallett for
the job. Coach Bill OBrien
announced the decision
before practice on Monday.
The whole competition
pushed us to be better,
Hoyer said. We competed
very hard and I know that
just because Im named the
PATRIC SCHNEIDER/Associated Press starter today doesnt mean
Brian Hoyer was named the starting quarterback for the Houston if we go out there and lose
Texans by head coach Bill OBrien on Monday, edging out Ryan a bunch of games that Im
going to still be the starter.
Mallett for the job.

You have to go out and

earn it every day in this
league.
Hoyer started 13 games
for the Cleveland Browns
last season before signing
with the Texans in the
offseason.
I thought that Brian
showed me the most
consistency, the most
composure in certain situations, the experience in our
system, all those different
things that go into the fact
that I think hes ready to be
our starter, OBrien said.
Some have questioned
whether either of these
quarterbacks are the longterm solution for this team.
On Monday he addressed
that question without

being asked about it.

We all need to give
Brian Hoyer a chance,
OBrien said. Hes got an
opportunity here. Hes got
an opportunity to go in
there as a starter and make
the most of his opportunity ... I believe in him. I
believe in his ability to run
our offense efficiently. I
believe in his experience
in our offense. I think hes
shown in the past that he
can be a successful starting
quarterback.
The 29-year-old Hoyer
was 7-6 as a starter last
season and finished with
3,326 yards passing with
12 touchdowns and 13
interceptions.
Being the new guy in

this organization I want to

go out there and earn the
respect of my teammates
and I think the only way
you really do that is by
winning football games,
Hoyer said.
Hoyer went undrafted
out of Michigan State
before signing as a free
agent with the Patriots,
where he worked as Tom
Bradys backup until he was
released in 2012. He was
also released by the Steelers
and the Cardinals before
signing with the Browns.
He started three games for
Cleveland in 2013 before
tearing his ACL.
