The Robredo Style: Philippine Local Politics in Transition

The article, The Robredo Style: Philippine Local Politics in Transition provides plentiful
information about the manner in which Jesse Robredo secured the maximum term of office and improved
the lives of his constituents. It enlightens the readers about former Mayor Jesse Robredos track record of
outstanding accomplishments from his studies to his jobs where he held key positions and up to the time
he was proclaimed the best Mayor of Naga City and the Philippines had ever had, on how he has shown
exemplary and outstanding performance as Mayor of Naga City, how he proved that dynamism and
commitment to ones sworn office imbued with a sense of honesty and integrity are possible even in the
worst of times even in the most difficult conditions present in his Native Naga City.
The article did not provide or adopt a key word to describe former Mayor Jesse Robredos
political style but the article gave a clear definition as to how the Robredo style works. According to the
article, the Robredo style is composed of generally two aspects, that is to say performance and
approachability. The good performance of Jesse Robredo as City governor/Mayor is unquestionable. The
article presented facts and clear examples on how former Mayor Jesse Robredo transformed his sleepy
hometown into one of the models of good governance in the Philippines. The area transformed from a
third-class to a first class city. He transformed Naga City the once lethargic city, into a premier city in the
Bicol region. The paper presented a valid data written by Jesse Robredo himself regarding the summary
containing his accomplishments of his tenure as City Mayor. Different tables regarding the good
performance in terms of integrity of governance (no graft and corruption), public safety (peace and order
situation), increase of investments in the city, cementing roads, or several kinds of assistance being
provided by the city government, was presented which makes the article credible and well organized.
The article claimed that Jesse Robredo performed and people learned. Former Mayor Jesse
Robredo makes use of good governance not only as a technique to deal with public administration issues
but also as his philosophy, something that he actually believed in which made him capable to encourage
or convince people about his programs. Jesse Robredo really demonstrated that good governance was
definitely good politics. In support of the claim that Former Mayor Jesse Robredo performed and people
learned, the article provided examples and valid information pertaining to the good governance of Jesse
Robredo.

The very foundation of the good governance model was participation. Jesse Robredo had
transformed Naga City into a model of local governance in the country, and a laboratory of governance
innovations or improvements. To engage citizens admission and representation in local decision making
process of the city, he approved the I-governance. Government services were made important information
and were available through an interactive website, streamlined government services, and afforded the
citizens with a platform to provide feedback about the performance of the city government.

He

gave opportunities for the public to pro-actively work with the officials of the city hall as regards to the
city budget, the yearly investment plans, course of actions relating to the use of health and education
finance for projects, and other plans or projects for the city environment to progress. He empowered the
people of Naga City; he allied with them for their own citys progress. Not only did he exemplify good
governance in Naga City, but also focused his attention on improving local governments throughout the
Philippines. Its a fact that Jesse Robredo was not willing to tolerate not only of graft and corruption but
also of incompetence, inefficiency, and a person who does not have the special ability to do something
well. The Robredo style strives for excellence when it comes to governance.

Such a man with an effective leadership style is a rarity these days. The Filipino
community is well known to always have something to say and to pass judgment on our
government institutions for being either crooked or concerned only about their own needs and
interests. Many officials whether a simple chairman of a barangay or a congressman with
national prominence, have been blamed of being corrupt. But Jesse Robredo was a man who
recognized what was right and wrong, who knew that the basis and foundation of a well-built
democracy is transparency and accountability, and who understood that to all others the
willpower of the people is significant and premier and that, unless your main concern or priority
is the people and the people alone and everything that you do is not because of personal gain or
simply because you want to enrich your family and friends by using funds that belong to the
public, you do not have, under any circumstances, a place in public service.
There is no excuse for haughtiness and indecency in government. In a country where
democracy was continuously being weakened by the corruption and incompetence of its leaders,
the epitome of the Lords servant leadership, Jesse Manalastas Robredo, former Mayor of the
City of Naga, showed clearly that democratic government can be good government through the
Robredo style. And with the help of this well written and organized article , the public may gain
knowledge of the Robredo style without difficulty.
