Titration
Pipette 25 ml of the sodium bicarbonate solution into a 250 ml conical flask.
Add three drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with shaking against
Hcl to the end point. Read the volume of Hcl (V1) which is equivalent to half
the carbonate content according to the following reaction.
Hcl + Na2CO3 = NaCL + NaHCO3
Add two drops of methyl-orange indicator to the same solution and continue
the titration with continuous shaking until the end point; read the volume of
Hcl (V2) which is equivalent to the bicarbonate content and half the carbonate
content. Repeat the test until two readings agree within 0.02 ml.

Calculations
The molarity of carbonate (MCO 3 ) and bicarbonate (MHCO 3 ) are
calculated as follows
MCO3-2
MHCO3-1
2 V1 x MHCL x 1
-------------------------2 x 25
Mass of Na2CO3
1 x MHCL x 2 V1 x 106
= -----------------------------------2 x 25
