1.0 Introduction
Meaning of Open Source Software (OSS)
Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the
source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright
holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source
Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use,
change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or
unmodified forms.

Meaning of Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to
operate and interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary
language is binary, devices are necessary to convert our input into that
language. The binary code coming out of the computer must also be
translated into something usable for the operator.

Meaning of Software
Software is often divided into two categories:
1.System software:

Includes the operating system and all the utilities that enables the
computer to function.

2.Application software:

Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word
processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall
under the category of applications software.

2.0The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1Meaning of Open Source OS

Open Source Operating System is the most important program that runs
on a computer that is free to use, change, and improve the software, and
to redistribute itin modified or unmodified forms. Every general-purpose
computer must have an operating system to run other programs.
Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from
the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files
and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk
drives and printers.

2.2Examples of Open Source OS

Google Chrome OS

Chrome OS is an operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed by Google. It is
developed out in the open in the Chromium OS open source variant and Google makes a
proprietary variant of it (similar to the split for the Chrome and Chromium browser). Since
Chromium OS targets computer users who spend most of their time on the Internet, it is
mainly a web browser with limited ability to run local applications, though it has a built-in
file manager and media player (in later versions, (modified) Android apps have also been
supported, since the browser has been made to support them). Instead, it relies on Internet
applications (or Web apps) used in the web browser to accomplish tasks such as word
processing. Chromium OS differs from Chrome OS in that Chromium is open-source and

used primarily by developers whereas Chrome OS is the operating system shipped out in
Chromebooks.

Linux Kernel

The Linux kernel is a Unix-like computer operating system kernel. It is used worldwide: the Linux operating system is based on it and deployed on both traditional
computer systems such as personal computers and servers, usually in the form
of Linux distributions, and on various embedded devices such as routers, wireless
access points, PBXes, set-top boxes, FTA receivers, smart TVs, PVRs andNAS
appliances.
The Android operating
system
for tablet
computers, smartphones and smartwatches is also based atop the Linux kernel.

3.0The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1Meaning of Open Source Application Software

Open Source Application Software (also called as end-user programs)
includes database programs, word processors, and spreadsheets. It is free
to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in
modified or unmodified forms.

3.2Examples of Open Source Application Software

Rocket.Chat

Rocket.Chat is an open source Web chat platform built for communities and
companies that want to host their own chat service. The Rocket.Chat team has taken
a modular package approach, enabling Rocket.Chat to offer an impressive array of
features aimed at making real time communications work -- from simple messaging
and emoji support to face-to-face videoconferencing, multiuser audio conferences,
screen sharing, and more.

Mattermost

Another open source alternative to Slack is Mattermost, whose story begins with the
companys origins as an HTML5 game developer. Initially built as a games portal and
messaging app to reach gamers outside Facebook, Mattermost was recast as a
collaboration solution when the company tried to change its internal messaging

service, only to find its archives held for ransom by the provider. The result is an
open source, on-premises Slack alternative written in Go and React.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing (also called ubiquitous computing) is the growing
trend towards embedding microprocessors in everyday objects so they
can communicate information. The words pervasive and ubiquitous mean
"existing everywhere." Pervasive computing devices are completely
connected and constantly available.

5.2 Examples Of Pervasive Computing

Smart Tv

Smart TV, which is also sometimes referred to as "Connected TV" or

"Hybrid TV", (not to be confused with Internet TV, Web TV, or LG
Electronics's upcoming "SMART TV" branded Net Cast Entertainment
Access devices), is the phrase used to describe the current trend of
integration of the internet and Web 2.0 features into modern television
sets and set-top boxes, as well as the technological convergence between
computers and these television sets /set-top boxes. These new devices
most often also have a much higher focus on online interactive media,

Internet TV, over-the-top content, as well as on-demand streaming media,

and less focus on traditional broadcast media like previous generations of
television sets and set-top boxes always have had.The technology that
enables Smart TVs is not only incorporated into television sets, but also
devices such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, game

GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation

satellitesystem (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all
weather, anywhere on or nearthe Earth, where there is an unobstructed
line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It ismaintained by the United
States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPSreceiver.
The GPS project was developed in 1973 to overcome the limitations of
previousnavigation systems, integrating ideas from several predecessors,
including a number of classifiedengineering design studies from the
1960s. GPS was created and realized by the U.S.Department of Defense
(USDOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites. It became
fullyoperational in 1994.

6.0 Conclusion
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright
claims, so users are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to
redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to

make our lives easier because we can interact with computers. Besides
that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will
grant your wish.
Open source software has natural strengths which benefit individual users.
Above and beyond this, the widespread use of open source software holds
advantages for the U.S. economy as a whole, and it is for this reason that
a careful program of government promotion and encouragement would be
justified and beneficial.
The aim of the research presented in this thesis is to contribute to the
design of CSdCL environments of good pedagogical quality. This is
approached by exploration of the research question: What are the most
crucial limitations and possibilities of Internet related to performing
collaborative activities in distributed learning situations? The research
question is primarily illuminated through the process of developing a
prototype of a CSdCL computer system and the application of this in a
CSdCL situation. This development is founded on literature studies and
initial studies at two distance education institutions
