They were natives highly literate in both Spanish and the vernacular.
Among them were Fernando Bagongbanta, Tomas Pinpin, Pedro Suarez
Ossorio and Phelipe de Jesus.
Salamat nang Ualang Hangga by Fernando Bagongbanta, a twelve-stanza poem
in alternating Tagalog and Spanish lines.
Tomas Pinpin- first known native printer, wrote his Auit in a similar manner.

THE MARIAN HYMNS.
Among the various devotions encouraged by the church
has been that of the Blessed Virgin. Many novenas has been attributed to her.
In 1865, Fr. Mariano Sevilla wrote several Marian hymns adopted from Fr.
Alfonso Muzzarelliss Il messe de Maggio (The Month of May).
The Marian Hymns have become the principal features of the Flores de
Mayo celebrations to this day. They consist of the (1) Salute to Virgin-sung by the
devotees as they approach the altar, (2) Pledge to the Virgin- sung as they offer
flowers at the Virgins feet, (3) Salve Regina- which follows the recitation of the
Rosary and the Litany, and the (4) Farewell to the Virgin- which concludes the
ceremonies.
THE PASYON- It is the most important literary work of a religious nature during the
Spanish period.
- The verse narrative of the suffering and death of Christ.
Ang mahal na passion ni Jesu cristong P. Natin the first known pasyon, written by
Gaspar Aquino de Belen in 1704.
METRICAL ROMANCES.
Corridos and Awit were widely read during the Spanish period.
The corridos are extended verse narratives based on tales brought into the country
from Europe. It deal mostly on courtly love and the chivalric adventures of such
heroes as Charlemagne and his peers and El Cid.
Most of the corridos are of unknown authorship.
The better- known ones are Ang Ibong Adarna, Don juan Tinoso, Don Juan Tenorio,
Ang Doce Pares ng Francia, Historia Famoso ni Bernardo del Carpio and Cay
Calabasa.
Corrido- is ordinarily in octosyllabic quatrains. (Example. Ibong Adarna)
Awit is rendered in dodecasyllabic quatrains. (Example. Florante at Laura)
Summary: IBONG ADARNA
The corrido relates the adventures of Don Juan, the youngest of the three
sons of King Fernando and Queen Valeriana of Berbanya. The king ruled the
kingdom peacefully, and the royal family was a happy one. The three brothers were
taught the art and skill of weaponry as they were all heirs apparent to the throne.
The palace was always filled with joy and laughter until one night when the
king dreamt that Don Juan was treacherously attacked and left to die in a deep well.
Worried over the meaning of his dream, the king fell gravely ill. All the physicians of
the land were summoned to cure the king but to no avail. Finally, it was learned that
the only remedy for the kings illness would be the soothing singing of an enchanted
bird, the Adarna.
The Adarna lived on Mount Tabor and could only be seen at night perched on
a tree whose leaves and fruit shone like silver and precious stones in the moonlight
so that it was named Piedras Platas. It would be gone the whole day, but as soon as
it came back to the tree in the evening, it would sing even songs, with its feathers
changing hues after every song. Then it would relieve itself and go to sleep.
Whomever its droppings would fall on would turn into stone immediately.
One after the other the two elder brothers set out to look for the bird but
failed to return. They had unwittingly fallen asleep under the enchanted tree and
had been turned to stone. After years of waiting, the king finally allowed Don Juan to
look for his brothers and the bird.
Don Juan encountered many dangers before he finally reached Mount Tabor.
There he shared his last piece of bread with an old hermit disguised as a hungry
leper. This act of charity earned for him the help of the hermit who showed him how
to catch the Adarna. With the bird in captivity, Don Juan proceeded to free his
brothers from their enchanted prison.
But on the way home, the elder brothers became envious of Don Juans
achievements and attacked him. Leaving him for dead on the wayside, Don Diego
and Don Pedro went home to present the Ibong Adarna to their ailing father.
The bird would not sing, no matter how much the brothers coaxed it to. The
kings illness was getting worse. When Don Juan returned to the palace, he had
been saved and nursed back to health by some people who had found him dying
along the road. Upon seeing him, the Ibong Adarna burst into song, and the king
was instantly cured of his illness. The bird also sang about the treachery of Don
Pedro and Don Diego. The king was furious and ordered them exiled, but Don Juan
interceded for them and they were then pardoned by their father.
This incident was followed by other adventures and treacherous plots against
Don Juan by his brothers which led Don Juan to different countries until he finally
met Dona Maria whom he married.

PROSE
The prose works of the period consisted mostly of didactic pieces and translations of
religious writings in foreign languages, such as novenas and biographies of saints,
aside from catechetical manuals and the linguistic works of the friar-lexicographers
and grammarians.
Urbana at Feliza by Fr. Modesto de Castro, it is the most important piece of
didactic literature of this period.
-
Published in 1855, it took the form of the epistolary novel with the full title
of Pagsusulatan nang dalauang binibini na si Urbana at Feliza na nagtuturo
ng mabuting caugalian. It is an exchange of letters between two sisters:
Urbana, who is a student in a colegic in Manila, and Feliza, who lives in the
province with their parents. The book constituted a code of conduct for the
time. Urbanas letters are full advice to her sister on proper behavior at
home, in church, at parties, while receiving a suitor in her parlor, and on
other occasions. One letter includes a priests counsel on how to choose a
life partner. The letters contain occasional pointers too, for Honesto, a
younger brother, and explanations of ones duties to God, to his family and
to his community.
