The document outlines the procedure for calibrating the transmission clutch pressure on a motor grader. This involves adjusting the electrical current to the transmission solenoid valves using a control service tool to achieve the specified clutch pressure.

The steps outlined are to attach a pressure gauge, enter the appropriate submode corresponding to the clutch being calibrated, note the specified pressure, adjust the electrical current using the control service tool until the specified pressure is reached, and then move to the next clutch or submode 40.

Potential error codes listed are E01 through E09, with explanations provided for each one. Examples include faults with solenoids or sensors, transmission not in park, and engine speed or oil temperature being too low.

Engagement Pressure for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate

SMCS - 3155-524-PX
Incorrect transmission clutch pressure adversely affects the life of the transmission. Submodes 31 through 33
are used in order to set the transmission clutch pressure of the direction clutches (No. 1 through No. 3). In
this process, the service technician adjusts the electrical current that is sent to the transmission solenoid
valve in order to obtain the specified pressure for the transmission clutch. The calibration of the transmission
clutch pressure must be performed prior to the transmission clutch fill calibration (submode 40).
The transmission system must be calibrated if any of the following conditions have occurred:
A transmission solenoid valve has been replaced or cleaned.
A different power train ECM has been installed.
New flash software has been flashed into the ECM.
A transmission clutch has been rebuilt.
The transmission clutch does not shift correctly.

During calibration of the transmission clutch pressure, error codes (EXX) can occur. The error codes will
appear in the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The error codes will appear if a problem
occurs during the calibration.

Procedure

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or
near the machine.
Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before
working on the machine.

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.
Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the
engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is
not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.
Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before
removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when
the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with
your bare hand.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: If you install a new transmission solenoid valve, shift the transmission into a gear that uses the
solenoid valve. Shift the transmission at least twelve times. Allow sufficient time for the corresponding
clutch to become fully pressurized. Refer to table 3 for information on the solenoids.
1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
2. Turn on the engine and warm the transmission oil to at least 65 C (149 F). The Caterpillar Electronic
Technician (ET) can be used to monitor the temperature of the oil.
3. Install the correct hose assembly from 1U-5482 Pressure Adapter Group on the pressure tap of the
modulating valve for the transmission clutch. Installation is on the clutch that is being calibrated.
Attach the opposite end of the hose assembly to the 0 to 3400 kPa (0 to 580 psi) pressure gauge in the
1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group .

7. Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to enter Transmission Calibration Mode "7". Then enter the
submode that corresponds to the clutch that is being calibrated. Enter the submode by using the
"SCROLL" switch.

8. The Caterpillar Monitoring System will display the correct pressure for each clutch, when the
conditions are correct. The units of the value that is displayed is shown in one-tenth of kPa. Multiply
the value that is shown in the display by 10 to determine the true specified value in kPa. Record the
value.
Note: The Caterpillar Monitoring System will not display the correct pressure for each clutch, when
the conditions are not correct. Instead, an error code (EXX) appears. The calibration will not run until
all necessary conditions are met. Correct the error code and perform these procedures again. Refer to
table 2 for a list of the error codes and the meaning of the error codes.
9. When all conditions are met and the pressure is shown in the display area, press the clutch pedal to the
full DOWN position.
10. The value that is shown in the display area will change and a number that corresponds to the electrical
current of the particular transmission solenoid valve is shown. The INCREMENT (+) and
DECREMENT (-) positions of the "CLEAR" switch can now be used to adjust the electrical current of
the transmission solenoid valve. The electrical current of the transmission solenoid valve controls the
transmission clutch pressure.
11. Release the clutch pedal.

12. To exit this submode, use the "SCROLL" switch to scroll to the submode that corresponds to the next
clutch that needs to be calibrated, or scroll to submode 40. Refer to Table 5 for a list of the submodes
for calibration of the transmission clutch engagement. Submode 40 is used in order to calibrate the
transmission clutch fill. Exit the Transmission Calibration Mode by using the "MODE" switch.
ReferenceFor more information on submode 40, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fill Time for the
Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" for the machine that is being tested.
