30MHZ AM Receiver
30MHZ AM Receiver
30MHZ AM Receiver
My wife wanted a remote control system to switch on her garden water pump some 100 meters away in our backyard.
I have plenty of 30MHz crystals which I can turn one of them into an AM transmitter. After messing around with
many off-the-shelf RC encoder and decoder chips - I had no luck. So I turned to the old day TONE DECODER. After
all it's just a single channel water pump (not a drone flight controller eg.,) that we are doing here.
The transmitter is made of a Colpitts oscillator, 1 KHz modulator and an RF amplifier (approx. 100mW). With just
a 70-cm whip antenna it can transmit the 30MHz RF signal to a distance beyond what is required in the backyard.
Below - is the receiver. BF998 mixes incoming 30MHz with the 30.455MHz local oscillator. I also have lots of
TA7640 and LA1260 in my junkbox that I thought I'd give the 7640 a try. Well, it works great although the
LA1260 does not need a second IF transformer in its AM demodulation circuitry. Anyway, Q4 brings up the 1KHz
tone from the transmitter to the level required by the NE567 PLL decoder chip. When NE567 detects the incoming
1KHz it drives pin 8 to ground (this pin is tied to Vcc via 4K7
which means Q5 is always ON and Q6 always OFF in the absence of
the tone from the transmitter.

Food box painted white
I placed the receiver in a plastic food box and left it under the
sun. The only problem was with the local oscillator - it shifted
when the clear plastic box was hit by direct sunlight. So I painted
the outside of the box with white paint. From then on, LO never
shifted and the box turned on the pump everytime I pressed RUN on
the transmitter from inside the living room 100 meters away.
