Salmon Slammin

Despite unseasonable cool, gloomy weather and a lake

wind advisory on Wednesday, there were a few anglers
(four boats at 4:00 to be precise) out there on Fort Peck
Reservoir in search of Chinook salmon. However, the

wind was blowing from the northwest so while the boats

were bobbing along, the waves werent too treacherous
closer to the face of the dam. The weather looks much
more favorable to chase them around this weekend.

Note from the Captain regarding salmon fishing on Fort Peck

Hes got Black Jaw Fever!

Sometimes predictions are

wrong, and sometimes theyre
correct. Well, a month ago I wrote
that I thought that this years
Chinook salmon season on Fort Peck

have had since then mid 1990s.
I was correct and for good

reason. There are still a few anglers For the past 4 weeks I have been
still around that remember the great fishing salmon every chance I get.

A Fort Peck Summer Theatre Review

The Woman in Black at FPST Thrills Audiences

SIGN-UPS

The Fort Peck Summer Theatre

closes out its 47th season with the
thriller The Woman In Black. This play
represents a significant departure from
the sort of material typically produced
at Fort Peck, but it is a welcome
exploration of genre theatre at its
finest. A true thriller, The Woman in
Black will keep you on the edge of your
seat as you try to figure out the mystery
unraveling on stage while consistently
reminding yourself to breathe in
anticipation of the next spine-tingling
twist. While this gothic ghost story
has its share of spooky moments, the
tension is broken at times with humor
and levity. It is also important to note
that the production does not contain
any gore or other gruesome elements
that may be objectionable to some
audience members.
The play employs clever devices
to advance the plot and build the

anticipation. Two actors tell the story

as a play within a play, each portraying
more than one character during the
course of the play. FPSTs production
features Mace Archer and Jay Michael
Roberts in the roles of Arthur Kipps
and The Actor. As Kipps, Roberts
provides the impetus for the story
as it is events within Kipps past that
serve as the plot for the play within
the play. The Actor portrayed by
Archer is hired by Kipps to help him
better relate the events to friends and
family. As Kipps (Roberts) is not a
born storyteller, The Actor (Archer)
suggests that he step into the role of
Kipps, which leaves Kipps to portray
all of the supporting characters. While
this may all seem quite complicated,
fortunately for you all, Archer and
Roberts deliver on the creation of
this conceit in a manner that is quite
easy to follow. Portraying all of the

supporting roles in the drama, Roberts

skills in character development are on
display as he is able to create distinct
and defined characters. Archers
considerable experience serves him
well as he becomes the emotional
heart of the piece and window for the
audience to the terror of a tormented
soul.
The play-within-a-play structure
has the characters portraying the story
on a simple set that makes effective use
of light (designed by Spencer Perry)
and sound (designed by Connor
Adams with contributions from James
Rickley) to set the mood and build the
suspense. A production such as this
poses a particular challenge for Fort
Peck, as it requires a rather intimate
connection between the audience
and the actors, which in Fort Pecks
enormous barn of a theatre could have
been lost. Fortunately for FPST, Andy

Meyers, Fort Pecks Artistic Director, was at the helm of this

production and he has a talent for delivering shows in the
space that capitalize on the buildings unique challenges.
Serving not only as director but also set and props
designer, Meyers is truly responsible for this productions
creative successes. In particular, the choice to construct
an additional thrust to the existing stage and then make
ample use of the theatres aisles as performance space is key
to the success for this production as it actually brings the
action to the audience and immerses theatre goers in the
story. While Meyers was at the helm of this production, he
cites special and significant assistance by Fort Peck Veteran
Megan Wiltshire as being of particular importance.

Originally produced on Londons West End in 1987, The
Woman in Black is the second longest running non-musical
in the history of the UKs equivalent to our Broadway. It was
also adapted as a feature film starring Daniel Radcliffe in
2012. One might presume while watching this play written
by Stephen Mallatrat that the source material would date to
the Edwardian Era, but in fact was based on a book written
in 1983 by Susan Hill.
Fort Peck should be applauded for taking a bit of a
risk in departing from their typical celebration of musicals,
comedies and mainstream classics. As a responsible member
of the arts community, the Fort Peck Summer Theatre and
its parent organization the Fort Peck Fine Arts Council
demonstrates through this production its commitment to
theatre as an artform, by creating opportunities for not only
established theatre patrons, but for those that may not have
been previously engaged. The Woman in Black runs 8/2628 and 9/2-4, with performances on Friday and Saturday at
7:30 PM and Sunday at 4:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased
by calling the theatre box office at 406-526-9943.

If you are unable to catch a performance of The Woman
in Black, stayed tuned for the 2017 season which was
recently announced to feature Arsenic and Old Lace, Oliver!,
The Million Dollar Quartet (A Montana Premeiere!), Grease
and Souvenir. ~ NICK DIRKES

Note from the Captain continued from front

like to fish when the fish are

biting and chinook salmon
are biting. I have always
loved to fish salmon on Fort
Peck but most of the time in
years gone by I have not been
rewarded like I have this year.
I remember one year I traveled
over to Fort Peck after hearing The Captain and his catch
the bite was on and fished for 3 days, 12 hours a day and
didnt even have a release on my downriggers.
That is the salmon fishing I have been used to at Fort
Peck and needless to say I probably missed fishing for
a year or two because the salmon were too elusive. Last
year was a good year for Downrigger Dale and I as we
ended up boating 6 salmon in a 5 day period. I know that
doesnt sound like a lot of fish to catch, but when you get
one of these aggressive fighters that can weigh up to 27
pounds take out line on your fishing reel drag, you get
what I call Black Jaw Fever.
There is nothing quite like it, and it is hard to describe
the excitement that you get by reeling one of these fighters
into the net. It is truly Black Jaw Fever. This year I have
fished with my girlfriend Berny, sister Debbie, brotherin-law Tim Frost, brother Dan, Downrigger Dale, and
Steve Hellegaard. Every time we have gone fishing we
have caught not one salmon but usually multiple salmon.
It has been a blast and it is about to come an end. The days
are winding down and that is why I am writing about
this now. The week leading up to Labor Day weekend
will probably be the peak. If you are interested in fishing
Fort Peck for salmon next week then I would get your
reservations for your accommodations now.
If you plan on staying in a motel and want to stay by
the lake then I would recommend The Lakeridge Lodging
and Bait shop as well the Historic Fort Peck Hotel. If you
have an RV then there are public campgrounds as well
as the Lakeridge and the Fort Peck Marina that offer
camp sites near the lake and the main boat ramp. There
are also boats for hire if you want to learn how to fish
for salmon or would like to hire an outfitter. If you have
any questions please feel free to e-mail me at captain@
montanaoutdoor.com and I will try to help you. Good
Luck and here is hoping you get The Black Jaw Fever!
