Message From Presidente Dayton

Being Baptism Focused in the Spain Barcelona Mission

Hermana Dayton and I have been in the mission for over a year and I have had an
opportunity to interview a lot of wonderful new missionaries (close to 100). One of the
questions I always ask in the first interview is, "Why are you here on your mission?" The
question is asked in a spirit of trying to understand how much this new missionary
understands about the real reason they are here on this mission. I hear answers such
as, "I want to bring people happiness", "I want to help change the world", "My brother
served and it changed him so much......", "I have always wanted to serve a mission", "l
want to serve the Lord", etc. All of these are great answers and are completely
fine. However, if you were to ask Elder Dallin H Oaks, I know what his answer would
be: "WE ARE HERE TO TEACH REPENTANCE AND BAPTIZE CONVERTS." The Spain
Barcelona Mission has always emphasized and understood that we are here to
baptize--that is our purpose, that is why we came here! Obviously we don't just
baptize anyone--we baptize converts, those truly converted to the Restored Gospel of
Christ.
Beside my bed in the Mission Home is a small dish which has 4 little white stones with
the symbol for baptism drawn on them. They were given to me and the other leaders
of the mission at a past Mission Leadership Council (Concilio). Every morning as I arise,
the first things I see are the white stones reminding me that my purpose here is to
teach repentance and baptize worthy converts. I start the day thinking about
baptism and how we need to bring as many of our Heavenly Father's children to
Christ as we possibly can. May I suggest that you missionaries find a picture, a symbol,
a poster, a photo, or something appropriate to place in your bedroom, living room or
some other highly visible place which reminds you of the reason we are here--to
baptize! Elders and Hermanas we need to be thinking about baptizing all of the time-when we arise, at medioda, at night and at other times as well. When we pray we
need to ask the Lord to lead us to those whom we can bless for eternity by opening
the gate through baptism. Our spirit brothers and sisters can never have access to
the blessings of exaltation unless they are baptized first. We must be obedient, work

hard and trust that the Lord will lead us to those whom the Lord has prepared to accept
the gospel and be baptized. We need to pray every day by name for those who have
a baptismal fecha (find them in El Clarn), pray by name for our specific investigators
and pray that we will find new souls to bring to Him through baptism.
Preach My Gospel reminds us that God has always required us to make covenants
which are binding and solemn agreements between God and man. Keeping
covenants brings blessings in this life and exaltation in the world to come. Our
covenants are made by means of sacred ordinances such as baptism. There are 6
reasons we are baptized: 1) Because it is a commandment (see John 3:5), 2) To follow
the example of Christ (see 2nd Nephi 31:5), 3) To enter into the Kingdom of Heaven
(John 3:5), 4) To become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
on this earth (D&C 20:37), 5) To open up access to the Atonement of Jesus Christ (D&C
20:25), and (6) To have our sins washed away (Alma 7:14).
Most missionaries in El Faro know that my favorite meeting in the Church is a
baptismal service. That was true even before I came into the mission field and is even
more true right now. I love the purity, the simplicity, the beauty, of a child of God
dressed in white standing in the sacred baptismal font making covenants with the Lord.
A noble priesthood holder raises his arm to the square and says the simple baptismal
prayer. The power of godliness is made manifest by the ordinances of the priesthood-that is why a baptismal service is such a powerful missionary tool. Honest, truth-seeking
people are always touched by the beauty and power of the ordinance. It is pure and
simple religion--a promise made between a choice son or daughter of God and their
Maker.
Elders and Hermanas, may we all increase our love and respect for this sacred and
beautiful ordinance, may we think about it all the time as we proselyte every day, may
we rejoice in it more when it takes place, and may we please our Heavenly Father by
offering it to as many of His children as possible is my prayer.
Con amor por el bautismo,
Presidente Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Thriftiness vs. Extravagance

Thriftiness is allowing myself and others to spend ONLY what is necessary. It is

being a wise steward over what we have so we can give more back to the Lord
and those in need. When we are thrifty we use as few resources as possible for our
own needs so we can be more generous to others. When we are stingy, we keep
what should be given to others so we have more for ourselves.

A few weeks ago we focused on being content with what we have. We

learned that the happiest people are those who know that personal possessions
do not bring happiness. In Luke 12:15 we read, "Take heed, and beware of
covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which
he possessth." A person who is content in life with the basic essentials will have the
natural ability to be thrifty.
Part of being thrifty is having only those personal possessions that are
functional. The Savior is the perfect example of this as he had only things that
were essential for life and His ministry. When he sent out the twelve disciples to
preach, he said, "...Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither
bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece."
Another aspect of thriftiness goes along with saving. A few weeks back we
studied the character trait of Resourcefulness. We learned to save now in case
we have a need in the future. During years of plenty we save, store food, etc. to
be used during lean years.

We can apply thriftiness to missionary work by:

--Using our missionary monthly allotment carefully

--Saving the $100 emergency money for it's intended use

--Making good use out of what we have
--Looking for the best value in items we purchase
--Not confusing what we need with what we want
--Investing personal money and time wisely in order to prepare for future goals
We are grateful for all you do in the mission. We see many missionaries who are
thrifty making wise financial decisions, purchasing healthy food and clothing that
works well in the mission. We love you and continue to pray for you daily as you
faithfully serve the Lord in your important work in bringing others to Christ.
