Travel Route
While wandering around Tamsui, don't miss Tamsui Old Street and the
riverside walk. Tamsui's numerous unique, historic buildings are worth at
least a day's visit, and if you don't wish to walk, the R26 bus can take you
to many of the town's main tourist sites. There are also ferries plying routes
between the Tamsui Ferry Pier, Bali Ferry Pier, and Fisherman's Wharf for a
change of scene.

In the old days, Huwei (also spelled "Hobe") Fort was responsible for protecting

Within the fort are alcoves that now display old photos and historical information.
The century-old Tamsui Itteki Memorial House is a newly opened tourist spot: It

Bitan Suspension Bridge is the most prominent feature of the landscape. Spanning
the Xindian R iver, the footbridge connects Bitan's east and west shores. The west
shore is dominated by a vista of green mountains meeting the river, while the
east shore boasts a string of riverside restaurants. The bridge is illuminated come
nightfall, giving it an enchanting appearance. Paddleboats move to and fro along the
river: Swan boats preferred by couples and larger boats t for the whole family
allow for the quintessential Bitan experience. To the south of the footbridge is the
sole remaining human-powered ferry across the Xindian River: The ve-minute
ride is a rare old-time experience.

The Bitan Scenic Area, close to Xindian Station, is rich with leisure amenities.
Half a day should be plenty of time to explore it. We suggest rst taking
a paddleboat ride on the river, then enjoying a meal or afternoon tea at
one of the riverside restaurants, followed by shopping on Xindian Road,
where you can buy a box of azuki bean cakes. If you have more than a
day to spare, you can explore Bitan, then make a side trip to Wulai in the
after noon, browse the quaint Wulai Old Street, watch an Aboriginal dance
performance, enjoy Aboriginal cuisine, then go back or perhaps stay a night
at a local hot-spring hotel.

Bicycle Access
By far the most popular tourist spot on the Xindian Line is the Bitan Scenic Area.
Its easy access from downtown Taipei, plus its splendid landscape of mountains
and water, makes Bitan a favorite spot among locals. Bitan's riverside scenery has
become ever more attractive since the opening of the MRT line, a romantic setting
for lovers as they paddle swan boats by day or stroll across the suspen sion bridge
under the stars.

Tamsui
Specialties of Tamsui
Tamsui offers a dazzling array of options for dining. There are two main zones:
Old Street (Zhongzheng Road) and the riverside walk. Old Street is famous
for a traditional local dish called agei: broth-soaked vermicelli wrapped in deepfried tofu skins and coated with fish paste, which are steamed and drizzled
with sauce. Other great snacks are sh balls, " iron eggs," and sh crackers. If you
get tired of walking around, you can quench your thirst and re-energize with
a cup of A-Ma's Plum Tea (135-3 Zhongzheng Rd.). Old-style bakeries abound
in Tamsui. Xinjiancheng Cakes (42 Gongming St.), Bei Stefan (81 Zhongzheng
Rd.), and Huwei Cake Shop (85 Zhongzheng Road) are venerable names, selling
traditional Taiwanese cakes popular with tourists. And a long
the riverside are numerous seafood restaurants and cafs:
W at erfront (135 Guanhai Rd.), adjacent t o t he Rong Ti,
offers a leisurely Balinese-style setting.

Sanchong Elementary School Station, near Taipei Bridge, is the rst stop along the
Luzhou Line in New Taipei City. Sanhe Night Market is located near the station on

The MRT's Xinzhuang Line runs through the districts of Xinzhuang and
Sanchong. Xinzhuang's convenient location next to the Tamsui River made
it one of the first parts of the Taipei area to develop. It prospered due
to trade in the reigns of the Qianlong and Jiaqing emperors in the Qing
Dynasty but its fortunes faded as the river silted up and the commercial
center of the Taipei area moved elsewhere. The old streets, historic temples,
and numerous long-established stores form its enchanting historic scenery
today. Walking the old streets allows visitors to get close to people's daily
lives. Xinzhuang doesn't only have historic sites, it also the nostalgic avor of
the life of times gone by.
This temple, the only city-designated historic site in Sanchong, enshrines the Five
Grains Emperor, the protector god of agriculture, who is also known as the Shen
Nong Emperor, so it's also called the Five Grains Emperor Temple. The name was
changed to Xianse Temple in the Japanese Colonial Period. The temple has a history
of over 200 years; it attracts numerous worshippers and is the local belief center. On
the 26th day of the fourth lunar month every year, the birthday of the Shen Nong
Emperor is celebrated, and the whole district takes part in the grand celebration.
A procession is also held, called the Sanchong Grand Festival. The two sides of the
temple were built by two different craftsmen in a kind of competition to see who
could do the nest work; the temple is the best preserved and nest of this type of
dui chang zuo building that is the work of two or more craftsmen in Taiwan.

Luzhou is known for qiezai mian (soup noodles), and since 2007 has been hosting an
annual qiezai mian festival. A distinguishing trait of local qiezai mian is a clear, sweet

in the Luzhou Temple Commercial District, A-San
Qiezai Mian (703 Changrong Rd.), and A-Liu
Taiwanese Style Noodles (583 Sanmin Road). And
don't forget to order some side dishes to round
out this local-style meal.
Separated by a single street from the Fu Jen Catholic University campus, this is one
of New Taipei City's ourishing large-scale night markets, with an area of over 3,300
square meters and hundreds of stalls. Food from around the globe is available, from
traditional Taiwan snacks to Japanese, Indian, and Thai specialties. In the games area you

The famed singer Teresa Teng spent some of her youth in Luzhou, and
there remain some traces of this celebrity here. For instance, in Luzhou

sells the winter melon mincemeat cakes that Teresa loved in her youth.
These "Teresa Cakes" make great gifts for fans. Outside Luzhou Station

Nanya Night Market, near Fuzhong Station, is Banqiao's prime center for street
food. Situated on Nanya South Road, Sec. 1, between Guanqian West Road and
Nanya East Road, the 400-meter-long night market has eateries big and small
offering choices galore. Nearby Nanmen Street boasts numerous bakeries, earning
it the nickname "Cake Street." Changxing Cake Shop is a venerable name, with
azuki bean cakes and mincemeat buns, signature products that make great gifts.

The Luzhou Line brings passengers to the Sanchong and Luzhou districts of New Taipei City. Luzhou
is located in the northwest part of the Taipei Basin, on the west side of the Tamsui River. It was
once a large sandbar in the river, and as such the egret, commonly found on sandbars, is a recurring
theme found in the public art along the last ve stations of the Luzhou line. The piece titled Dancing
Feathers at Luzhou Station is a good example. After the opening of the Luzhou Line, the renown of
tourist spots along it has blossomed, attracting many a
curious visitor.

Completed in 1893, Banqiao's Lin Family Mansion and Garden is the most complete
example of garden architecture remaining in Taiwan. Occupying an area of about 1.9
hectares, it was built by expert craftsmen; both the buildings and the landscaping
are masterpieces of exquisite artistry. Each day at 10:00, 11:00, 13:30, 14:30, and
15:30 there are free guided tours, which you can sign
up for by phone or on-site. (For English guide, please
make appointment one week in advance.)
The Zhonghe Line leads from Taipei into the districts of Yonghe and
Zhonghe in New Taipei City. These areas are densely populated,
with different ethnic groups forming enclaves, their cultures reected
in shop signs, foods, and festival activities. They're well worth a visit.

Banqiao 435 Culture Park, located at the end of Lane 433 of Zhongzheng Road,
is impressive with its white stones and Baroque-style architecture and is a popular
site for taking wedding photos. Within the grounds is a museum housing over 1,000
toys, from traditional rural toys to those from the 1960s and 1970s, capturing the
interest of kids and adults alike. In 2012, a Wetland Story Museum was also opened
inside the park area, where you can learn more about the wetland ecology.

The districts of Zhonghe and Yonghe, served by the Zhonghe Line of the MRT,
are immigrant cities; the concentration of overseas Chinese from Myanmar
in the Huaxin Street area of Zhonghe led to the formation of Myanmar
Street, a street with a pronounced southeast Asian feel; quite a few overseas
Chinese from South Korea live on Zhongxing Street in Yonghe and Korea
Street, a street with numerous shops selling Korean goods, developed.
Myanmar Street and Korea Street can be said to be microcosms of the
immigrant communities in Zhonghe and Yonghe respectively, both streets having
an exotic atmosphere, attracting many visitors who travel specially to taste the
exotic cuisine available or to buy imported goods.
