have  no  secrets.

Before  you  read  Chapter  9  (Gulliver  escapes  from  Brobdingnag),  what  do  you  think
is  going  to  happen?  Circle  Y  (yes)  or  N  (no)  for  each  of  these  ideas.

9. ‘I  expect  they’re  among  the  most  important  people  in  the  country’  –  It  is  said
by  Gulliver  when  a  Struldbrug  told  him  what  is  a  Struldbrug.  It  is  a  human

10. ‘You  see,  you’ve  made  a  very  understandable  mistake’  –  It  is  said  by
Gulliver’s  friend  when  he  explain  to  Gulliver  why  the  Struldbrugs  have  a
terrible  life.

Read  Chapter  12,  and  answer  these  questions.

1. Why  did  Gulliver’s  sailors  attack  him  and  leave  him  on  a  small  island?
Because  they  were  going  to  take  control  of  the  ship  and  become  pirates.
2. Who  was  in  control  of  this  island?  The  horses.
3. Who  were  the  servants  in  the  country  of  the  Houys?  The  horrible-looking
animals  called  Yahoos.
4. What  did  Gulliver  eat  on  the  island?  He  learnt  how  to  bake  little  cakes  made
of  corn,  which  he  ate  with  warm  milk.  Sometimes  he  caught  a  bird,  and
cooked  it,  or  picked  leaves  of  plants  to  eat  with  my  bread.
5. Why  did  Gulliver  have  to  explain  to  his  Houy  master  what  ‘lying’  meant?
Because  in  their  language  there  is  no  word  which  means  telling  lies,  and  then
the  Houy  didn’t  understand  why  does  anyone  tell  a  lie.
6. What  did  Gulliver’s  Houy  master  think  about  money?  That  it  is  strange,
because  they  share  everything  there.
7. Why  was  Gulliver  so  happy  in  the  land  of  the  Houys?  Because  there,  there
are  sensible,  gentle  creatures,  who  never  lied  or  stole,  in  a  country  which  had
no  desease,  no  crime,  no  wars.
8. Why  did  the  Houys  ask  Gulliver  to  leave  their  country?  Because  they  have
decided  he  can’t  stay  here  because  Gulliver  isn’t  neither  one  of  them,  nor  a
Yahoo
9. How  did  Gulliver  feel  about  his  family  when  he  got  home?    They  looked  and
smel  like  Yahoos  too,  and  he  told  them  to  keep  away  from  him.
10. What  did  Gulliver  realize  five  years  later?  He  write  his  stories  of  his  life  with
the  Houys  but  the  people  accuse  him  of  lying  in  the  book,  so  Gulliver  accept
that  the  human  says  lies  forever  and  the  that  the  humans  are  all  Yahoos.
