Portuguese Consular Revenues

Portuguese Consular Revenues were introduced in 1870 for use only in their Brazilian Consulates. In
1902 Consular Revenues were introduced in all Portuguese Consulates throughout the world to pay
the stamp duty and taxes on documents. Consulates varied in importance depending on size and were
designated Consulate 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class Consulates and Vice-Consulates. As Consulate issues
form a homogenous grouping, they are combined in the following section.

From 1862 to 1864 the blue revenue stamps were used in the Azores and Madeira. However in 1864
the value of the Reis differed between the two and Madeira stamps were changed to a red colour.
Around 1880 the Madeira Reis was again equal and there was no need for different stamps.
Historically, the adjacent islands were strongly linked to mainland Portugal, sharing the same postal
rates and fiscal laws, Azores comprising three administrative districts and Madeira one. The following
issues are consequently presented together in the following section.
