ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES

Tunnels play a key role in assisting

the movement of people, goods, and
special services. The functionality of
tunnels depends on the structural and
durability performance of its lining system.
Tunnel lining systems act as lines of defense
against large overburden loads and complex
geotechnical surrounding conditions. The use
of precast concrete tunnel linings has been
escalating due to its ecient and
economical
installation
process
compared to that of normal cast
in-situ lining practice.

The main objective of

this
project
is
to
understand and review the
design process of precast
segmental concrete
tunnel
lining. Furthermore, tunnel
modeling using ETABS
were carried out for
analysis and design.

SIGNIFICANCE
& MOTIVATION
Tunnel construction is one of the most
complex challenges in the eld of civil
engineering but these challenges havent stopped
engineers from dreaming up even bigger and
bolder ideas. If Mughals could make
remarkable construction from early 15th
century to early 18th century then why
today we are afraid of adopting
modernized tunnel techniques for
building this unique structure.

METHODOLOGY
The design has been carried out in accordance with AASHTO LRFD
Specications for precast segmental concrete tunnel lining. The
tunnel accommodates a typical railway section carrying a broad
gauge rail track including a maintenance walk.

CONCLUSION
We all are aware of the fact that there are lots of risks involved but
tunnel Engineers take such risks in the hope of favorable
outcomes. Many tunnels are considered as technological
masterpieces and governments have honored tunnel
engineers as heroes.
