which are taught as a one day (six and a half hour) curriculum designed
for busy schedules. It includes Babysitting as a Business, Success on the
Job, Child Care Essentials, Safety for the Sitter, Injury Management, Preventing Problem Behavior, Care of Choking Infant, and Care of Choking
Child. It introduces Preventing Injuries and Behavior Management. Adolescents ages 12 to 14 may register for this event up to the day before,
but space is limited to the first eight people who register.

Memorial Day in Cadillac this year will focus on the
60th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The observances will follow the traditional pattern,
with the Cadillac Area Honor Guard performing a salute
to sailors at 9:30 a.m. on Lake Cadillac at the City Dock
near the Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion.
The parade down Cadillacs main street, Mitchell
Street, starts at 10 a.m., and will follow the shore of the
lake to Veterans Memorial Stadium at the intersection
of Chestnut and Linden streets. Veterans are encouraged
to walk in the parade, and a horse-drawn carriage also
will be available to carry those unable to walk the route.
The ceremony at the stadium begins at 11 a.m. According to Steve Birdwell, commander of the Cadillac Area
Honor Guard, there will not be a speaker this year, but instead the names on the wall of the stadium will be read.
We will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the stadium. The first game was played in October 1956, Birdwell said. It was a good idea 60 years ago and it still is.

Members of American Legion Post No. 300 kick off the

ceremonies at 10 a.m. as they march to Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of Main and Prospect streets.
The observance will include a flag ceremony, a 21-gun
salute and the laying of a wreath at Lake Missaukee in
remembrance of those who sailed the seas. A brief flaglowering ceremony generally also is held at the Lake City
Cemetery.
Memorial Day always takes on special meaning in

Evart, hometown of Joseph Guyton, the first American
soldier to be killed on German territory in World War I.
Ceremonies begin 10 a.m. at Guyton Park and include a
flag ceremony as well as the playing of Taps and a 21-gun
salute, according to David Brickey. Brickey is the commander of VFW Post 7979 as well as Thomas E. Smith
AMVETS Post 11.
Following the ceremony at the park a wreath-laying
ceremony takes place on the Muskegon River. Then its
on to the Evart city cemetery for Taps, a salute and a flag
ceremony.
It all wraps up with coffee and doughnuts at the VFW/
AMVETS post, Brickey said.
MANTON
The veterans of Eugene Kimbel VFW Post No. 7806,
joined by the Manton High School Band, Boy Scouts
and others, generally make three stops on Memorial
Day. There is a 9 a.m. ceremony at Greenwood Township
Cemetery followed by a trip to Fairview Cemetery for a
10 a.m. ceremony. The day wraps up at Liberty Township
Cemetery at 11 a.m.
Calls were made to the VFW Post but no one was
reached by press time so the itinerary was not verified
for this year.

Reed City
On Memorial Day, May 30, the Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post No. 2964 leads a parade. The parade will begin
at 9 a.m.
The parade starts at the Reed City Depot and travels
along Upton Street to the Osceola County Courthouse,
then to Woodland Cemetery on Church Street for the formal ceremony.

Talent showcase
The math is pretty impressive.
So, too, usually are the results.
The annual Cadillac News Track and Field Invitational
Meet has featured a U.S. Olympian, several NCAA Division I runners and a large number of MHSAA state
champions.
All of that from 11 schools in Wexford, Missaukee and
Osceola counties.
The Olympian, of course, is Cadillacs Paul McMullen
who competed in the 1996 Atlanta Games. The NCAA
Division I athletes range from Cadillacs Katie (Erdman)
Waits, Alisha (Cole) Reichenbach, Kaitlyn Patterson and
Riley Norman to Pine Rivers Rachel (Whitley) Mod-

derman and Lia (Jones) Palomino to Reed Citys Sami

Michell.
This years version is the 44th annual, making it the
longest-running newspaper-sponsored honor roll meet
in northern Michigan. It will be held again on Memorial
Day, May 30, at Cadillacs Veterans Memorial Stadium.
While there are no superstars on the horizon for 2016,
things could be wide open to set some individual and
program bests on Memorial Day if the weather cooperates.
On the girls side, two names to watch are Mesick senior Sierra King and Cadillac junior Liz Pyles.
Areas top athletes on the track for one special afternoon

King had a breakthrough spring a year ago, winning the MHSAA Division 4 state title in the 100-meter
hurdles, taking second in the 300 hurdles and third in the
long jump.
Pyles is a standout thrower for the Vikings with high
30s in the shot put and shes already thrown further than
120 feet in the discus this spring.
On the boys side, its Reed City senior Nathan Fasbender as another in a line of talented Coyote vaulters.
Fasbender is headed to Grand Valley State University to
compete for the Lakers this fall, as is Cadillac senior Jake
Maier.
Cadillac senior Michael Holdship is another standout
thrower with eyes on all-state finishes in the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals a week after the meet.
The meet is a wrap up to the season for some and for
others, its a warm-up for the MHSAA state finals.
It features student-athletes from Buckley, Cadillac,
Evart, Forest Area, Lake City, Manton, Marion, McBain,
Mesick, McBain Northern Michigan Christian, Pine
River and Reed City.
It begins Memorial Day with the Parade of Athletes
around 3:30 p.m. and the running events about 45 minutes

Gates open around 2 p.m. with the pole vault starting
shortly after that. Field events begin around 3:30 p.m.

as the meet approaches. You also can track who is likely
to qualify for the meet when the Cadillac News runs its
weekly honor rolls with the best performances in each
event.
The day after the meet, the Cadillac News will announce one male and one female scholarship winner. The
award, determined by the days gate receipts, is based on
meet performance, academic performance and extracurricular involvement at their school and in their community.

offers another round of fun
Looking for a relaxing evening of golf without the
prohibitive cost? Disc golf might be right up your alley.
Played like regular golf, except for the use of Frisbee-type discs instead of a ball and clubs, the sport
has gained massive popularity in the U.S. and northern Michigan.
Three different courses in Wexford County offer a
range of difficulty and terrain challenges for both
the beginner and experienced player.
Courses at Kenwood Park and Diggins Hill are free
for anyone to use.
Kenwood Park features 24 holes set on a flat course
filled with trees that act as natural obstacles.
The Diggins Hill course features 18 holes on a terrain with elevation shifts and plenty of trees.
The Wild Haven Disc Golf Resort, located a few

miles south of Manton, features some of the most

challenging holes in the area.
Owner Michael Wildner said the course is more
wide open and contains shots from varying elevations and tee distances. He said wind also is more of
a factor on his course.
The course is open for anyone to use, but Wildner
asked that players pay a small amount in order for
him to maintain the grounds and add improvements.
Payments can be dropped in a tube on site, similar
to how forest campground fees are paid.
The Kenwood Park course is located off North Boulevard, in Cadillac. The Diggins Hill course is located
off East River Street, in Cadillac. Wild Haven Disc
Golf Resort is located on East 18 1/2 Road, which is
off U.S. 131. The course has a sign that reads Yeti
Tech, which is visible from the road.

Free fishing weekend is
June 11 and 12
Heres a free chance to catch on to fishing

Chances are youve got a fishing pole or two tucked
away in the back of the garage.
If a fishing license is the only thing you need to revisit
your favorite fishing hole, the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources hopes to lure you to the water on Free
Fishing Weekend.
This summers free fishing weekend is June 11 and 12.
For two days, the state waives all fishing license fees for
both residents and out-of-state visitors. Keep in mind
that free fishing is not a free-for-all, however: all fishing
regulations still apply. As it has in the past, the Carl T.
Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center will offer a fishing
program over the weekend. The center is located at 6087

E. M-115 in Cadillac West.

Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center Interpreter Ed Shaw said as always, the center will have its annual
youth fishing derby. As of press time the exact time was
not known, but Shaw anticipated it would likely be noon
or 1 p.m. on June 11. He added children will be competing
for trophies with winners determined by the number of
fish caught and not the size of fish.
He also said the center makes its stock of fishing poles
available for would-be fishermen to drop a line in the
nearby canal connecting lakes Cadillac and Mitchell,
with anglers receiving help choosing bait, putting it on
the hook and identifying their catch.

ultra light Ugly Sticks we let people use so we are not
going to be handing you a cheap rod and reel. It is good
equipment.
While the gear, as well as bait, will be available on free
fishing weekend, Shaw said it also is available free of
charge every other day of the summer. The only difference is you will need a license to fish.
Shaw added the hope is that people will want to continue to fish after they have fun during the free weekend.
It is a good opportunity for people to get outside. The
whole thing (free fishing weekend) is to allow people to
try out fishing without having to purchase a license in
hopes that they have so much fun they will buy one and
go again, Shaw said.
At that point in the season, pan fish are usually on their
beds and can be easily caught. Weather in June is usually
good and typically warm so many people are ready to get
outside and have some fun.

Sounds of jeeps & prayer

kick off summer season
Its an unlikely combination, but
residents and visitors alike have
come to expect Jeeps and prayer to
kick off the summer season in Northern Michigan.
The Mesick Jeep Blessing started
off as a gathering of a handful of
Jeep enthusiasts who would take to
the trails outside Mesick following a
short prayer.
It has transformed into an annual
event that draws hundreds of Jeeps
and other off-road vehicles, as well as
thousands of spectators.
Deb and Gordy Stafford started the
blessing 15 years ago.
Whoever thought it would get this
big? Deb said. But its always been
about the blessing. To get people together with like-minded interests and
promote a safe year of off-roading.
As part of the blessing, several

UpBeat Cadillac
Music Series returns this summer
For roughly 20 years, Thursday nights during the

summer in Cadillac have been musically diverse and
upbeat.
For 19 years, Thursday has been the time when world
class jazz, blues and R&B is played as part of the UpBeat
Cadillac Music Series. The plan is to have it back again
this summer for the 20th year and 10 weeks of acts have
been confirmed to play on Thursday night during the
summer.
The concerts start at 7 p.m. beginning on June 23 and
continue weekly through Aug. 25 at the Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion. All shows are free, listener, community supported and music is played rain or shine. Donations are encouraged to help defray the cost, but are not
required.
The acts coming this year include:
June 23: Paul Kellers At Sundown Quintet, pop, jazz.
June 30: The Back Beats, blues, funk, pop, R&B.

and arraigning lodging for the musical acts coming to

Shroom season kickoff

Finding a morel mushroom is like
finding gold; so is finding a free event
with fun for the whole family. The
Mesick Mushroom Festival has both
of those things.
Mesick, the self-proclaimed mushroom capital of the United States,
will have their annual Mesick Mushroom Festival on Mothers Day weekend, May 6 through May 8 with a few
pre-festival kick-off events the week
before.
The festival kicks off April 29 at
noon with the start of the mushroom
contest the search for the largest
black morel mushroom at Yeomans Market, located at 125 E. Mesick Ave. The contest will end at noon
on Saturday, May 7, with the winner
receiving $50.
For those looking to do a little morel hunting, mushroom picker kits
will be available at the festival for $6.

There will also, naturally, be morel

mushrooms for sale at the festival.
Shiela Ferrel, one of the event coordinators said there will be 10 or 12
locals selling morels.
Last year Rob Ketchum, known as
The Mushroom Man, had 10 pounds
of morel mushrooms that he found
and brought to the event.
Theres more than just morel mushrooms at the festival, though. The
evening of Friday, May 6 will have an
array of activities that children can
enjoy such as Friday Night Live in
Mesick. This event on Walter Street
will have a DJ, bounce house, face
painting and other events for families
to enjoy together.
Ferrel said the grand parade on
Saturday at noon is always a festival
favorite. Last year, she had over 70
entries for the parade.
Other weekend events include a 5K
run/walk, a carnival, craft show, helicopter rides and an antique car show.

Huey Lewis and the News will visit Interlochen this summer during the annual Arts Festival on July 19.
Interlochen Summer Arts Festival

will showcase rising and current stars in the arts
The Interlochen 2016 Summer Arts Festival is perhaps

one of the hidden gems of Michigan.
Its the largest arts festival in Northern Michigan and
its one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the
country, said Christopher Gruits, executive director of
Interlochen Presents. A lot of people dont even realize
how big it is.
This year for the 52nd season of the festival, Huey Lewis and the News, Martina McBride, Tears for Fears and
even Jay Leno will be featured.
Performances this year start on Thursday, June 23.
This will be a concert by the Steve Miller Band at 8 p.m.
in the Kresge Auditorium. Jay Leno and Martina McBride will be performing at the same location with Leno
performing on Friday, July 29, at 8 p.m. and McBride on
Friday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m.
Music, of course, isnt all thats offered at the festival.
There will also be a performance of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet in an open theater.
We really have every type of arts presentation here,

said Gruits. We have everything from writers to visual
arts gallery to modern dance or Shakespeare.
One of the unique performances Gruits talked about
was called LUMA: Art in Darkness.
LUMA, as Gruits explained, uses darkness as a canvas
and light as a paintbrush and performance tool.
The show is conducted in a completely dark theater and
uses a beautifully inter-woven flow of light, dancers and
music to create a colorful and mesmerizing performance.
This particular show by LUMA features Melissa Staroszik, Canadas rhythmic gymnastics champion along
with seven other dancers.
While the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival certainly
brings in some big names from the world of arts, this
year the festival is focusing on showcasing some of the
upcoming artists with the Young Americans Festival,
which, as Gruits explained, is a festival within a festival.

This Young Americans Festival is

an opportunity for people in Northern Michigan to experience some
of the top young artists from across
the country they may see over the
next couple of years, said Gruits.
Theyre really kind of rising stars.
Some of these rising stars even have
their roots in Interlochen. For example, one of the players in SYBARITE5,
which will be performing on Tuesday,
July 19, at 8 p.m. in Dendrinos Chapel,
is an Interlochen alum.
Its great to have the connection
for students who are here studying so
they can see someone who attended
Interlochen return in a professional
context, said Gruits.

CADILLAC The purr of rumbling engines and shine of
classic cars will take over downtown Cadillac in June during
Back to the Bricks 2016.
Four-hundred-plus classic cars are expected to be at this
years event in Cadillac, which brings in hundreds of people,
and is set to take place June 4 and 5.
It is a great showcase of the people and things to do in the
area, said Joy VanDrie of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau.
Its the largest public event that we have annually here in
Cadillac.
VanDrie said event attendees also will have the opportunity
to see the famous Polar Express 1225 Pere Marquette steam
train on June 4 around 1 p.m. This will be the second year that
the train has been in Cadillac for the event, and VanDrie is
excited to have it back in the area.
There also will be a Fun Run on Saturday. This sight-seeing
tour will take participants on a quest to 20 different locations
in a 20-mile radius of Cadillac in the hopes of obtaining the
best poker hand. In order to participate in the event, a $5 Fun
Run card is needed. The card will be punched at each location. At the end of the day, the cards will be turned in and participants will draw a hand of cards based on their punches.
While the event has been going in Cadillac for a couple of
years, that doesnt mean there wont be new activities at the
event this year.
The Shoreline Show and Shine is a new addition. After the
cars cruise around lakes Cadillac and Mitchell on June 4,

they will head back towards downtown and park in the lots
adjacent to the lake for a casual show and shine for the afternoon.
VanDrie said she was incredibly excited to hear that Back
to the Bricks in Cadillac will be getting some major attention
this year as well.
We just got notification that the National Hot Rod Association is going to have a representative here and an information
booth, she said. For a car show to have groups like that
looking at Cadillac and Back to the Bricks just tells us that its
a great event to attend.

Freedom Festival
is fourth fun in Cadillac
Cadillac will definitely make a big boom again this Fourth of

July.
The festival will take place July 1 to 4. Some events, such as
the annual Water Fire Tribute to honor veterans, Thunder by
the Lakeshore Motorcycle show, the free Community Picnic,
and live music, will all return this year. New activities include
a 5K race, but as of press time planning was not complete.
The Pork in the Park event also will return this year. The
cookoff will have up to 12 contestants square off to see who has
the best ribs, baked beans and corn on the cob.
The cooking will start at 9 a.m. (on July 3), but people will be
able to sample and vote for their favorite from 2 to 6 p.m. Like
last year, there will be a small fee to pay to vote, but for that fee
you will get ribs, beans and corn.
Besides the Pork in the Park, there will be kids activities in
and around the park throughout the festival and DJ ShawnyD will be hosting a street dance on Lake Street beginning at 6
p.m. on July 1. The beverage garden will be open beginning on
July 1 with all the proceeds benefiting the Cadillac Area Honor
Guard.
There are other events planned during the celebration as
well. At the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center the
Mike Townsend Kids Fishing Tournament will be held on July
2 with registration starting at 7 a.m. and the contest from 8 to
11 a.m.
As for entertainment at the Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion
on July 2, The Donny Hart Band will be the featured entertainer. The next night, Tommy Vale & the Torpedos will take the
stage.The Beverage Garden also will have late night entertainment with Afterglow.
A community church service will be held at 10 a.m. on July 3.
Throughout the weekend, food and merchandise vendors will
be in the park as well. The annual Fireworks show will be held
on July 3 and will be let off over Lake Cadillac.
On July 4, festivities will kick off with the Grand Parade at
10 a.m. and, as always, staging for the event will be from Lake
and Harris streets near Elk Alley. Immediately following the
parade there will be the community picnic in the park. There
also will be vendors and a kids carnival to wrap up the long
holiday weekend.

in Evart
Evarts Fourth of July fireworks will be at a new location

this year. Instead of the display taking place at the Osceola
County Fairgrounds where they had been for 40 years or
so, the Evart Municipal
Airport will be their new
home.
City officials say the
new location will provide
ample parking and, perhaps, promote more community. The fairgrounds
location offered limited
seating, and those who
attended the fireworks
watched from parking
lots and spread lawn
chairs along streets.
The fireworks display
is slated to begin at dusk
July 3. Organizers will
use July 4 in case of a
weather-related, July 3
postponement.
Although the fireworks
have become an important part of Evarts Independence Day activities
and they draw thousands
of onlookers each year,
they are but a part of the
communitys holidayrelated activities. Also on
the communitys agenda
is the annual Fourth of
July parade.
The parade route lies
along Main Street. Paraders end up in the park. The July 4 parade is Evarts largest.
It annually features veterans, the high school marching
band, old tractors, fire-fighting equipment and horses
among its other attractions. The parade begins at 11 a.m.
People begin lining Main Street with lawn chairs well before the events official start time.
Following the parade is the Party in the Park.
The party takes place in Evarts Riverside Park along the

edge of the placid Muskegon River. At the park, a DJ will
play familiar tunes. Pony rides will be available for children. Bounce houses
will provide other fun
options for young attendees. Fire department personnel will
offer giant water slide
entertainment.
A mechanical bull
will be at the park for
those wanting to test
their riding skills.
Those with a good
pitching arm or just
wanting to dunk someone can try their luck at
the dunk booth. In the
river, people will race
rubber ducks.
Want food? The Lions
Club will hold a chicken
barbecue. Firefighters

Summer is not the same without
Razzasque Days
LEROY It just wouldnt be summer without the annual event with the odd-sounding name.
The second weekend in July is LeRoys annual celebration, Razzasque Days. July 8 is Kids Day with the
childrens theme parade in the morning and games in
the park after lunch. July 9 is the grand parade complete
with floats, big trucks, tractors and entertainment followed by a chicken BBQ and entertainment in the village
park.
Both days have multiple events such as softball, golf,
and horseshoe tournaments, kids games, food booths,
vendors, car shows and many other activities throughout
the day. Nightlife is highlighted by the street dance and
adult beverage tent with live entertainment each evening. For a more detailed schedule, visit the LeRoy Razzasque Days website closer to the date of the event.

Razzasque Days has been going on in LeRoy for a number of years and most people still have no clue what the
name means but they do know what to expect when it
takes place: fireworks, a parade, a Miss LeRoy contest, a
car show, various kids games and much more.
This first began as a logging festival then morphed
into more of a community celebration, planning committee president Lori Servello said. It has obviously
changed over the years but our signature events always
seem to stay the same.
We see people from all over, Servello said. Its amazing because you can stand in the middle and look around
and not recognize anyone, which means people from the
outside are coming in.
This years event will take place July 8 and 9, with most
of the activities taking place on Saturday, July 9.

Family fun on the canal

The canal between Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac
will be lined with hundreds of people as cardboard and
duct tape boats race by on June 18 for the seventh-annual
Day on the Canal.
Its one of our biggest events in the year; it brings in
anywhere from 800 to 1,200 people, said Edward Shaw,
park interpreter at Mitchell State Park.
Shaw said anyone or any entity can enter a boat in the
races, which are broken into four groups: ages 6 to 10, 11
to 15, 16 and older and a family race.
The requirement for entering a boat into the races is
simple: the boat can only be made of cardboard, duct tape
and spray paint.
Shaw said every year people at the event are baffled
that a boat can be made out of cardboard, but said its really the duct tape that keeps the boats afloat.
If you build a good boat, it will last... a majority of the
boats make it down and back, he said, adding that he
has two boats that his four kids have raced for a couple of
years.

This event is really meant for people of all ages to have

fun with said Shaw, adding that one year a group of five
grown men all squeezed into one cardboard boat and
paddled it down the canal.
It was pretty darn comical and people get really into
this. They dress up and wear wigs.
If the fun of racing a cardboard boat down the canal
isnt enough incentive to get people to participate, there
are prizes. Awards will be given for the most creative design spanning all age groups and the best time in each of
the age categories.
In addition to the boat races, there also will be an arts
and crafts show on June 18.
The arts and crafts show has been getting bigger and
bigger each year and it all seems to be Michigan-made,
said Shaw, adding that last year there was someone who
made jewelry out of Michigan rocks and someone who
makes wood benches and swings.

Two events in Marion offer residents and visitors alike
a healthy dose of good, old fashioned fun.
This years Marion Fair will be held from June 19 to 25,
and will feature all the attractions that have made this
event a perennial favorite for more than 75 years.

race, music, canoe/kayak race, parade and more.

A music festival for the

hammered dulcimer
For 43 years now, the Original Dulcimer Players Funfest has been one of Michigans cant-miss festivals.
The 44th year of the festival will be held at the Osceola
County Fairgrounds in Evart July 14 to 17. Each year
the event draws thousands. Even before the official,
three-day extravaganza begins, the town swells as musicians begin pouring into the city. Many of them camp
at the fairgrounds and gather for informal jam sessions
while waiting for the main event.
Organizers bill the event as a family oriented music
festival for people of all ages. The yearly festival is the
offspring of the 53-year-old Original Dulcimer Players
Club.
The Original Dulcimer Players Club is the largest
and oldest hammered dulcimer club in the world. By
original dulcimer, club members mean the hammered
dulcimer.
Kathy Rayman, president of the Original Dulcimer
Players Club, said the hammered dulcimer was a little-

known instrument 53 years ago. The mission of the

Original Dulcimer Players Club was to preserve and
promote the art of playing the hammered dulcimer. I
think it has done that.
The festival offers a large assortment of workshops,
including more than 70 relating to the hammered dulcimer. Also being offered are autoharp, banjo, bass guitar,
dobro, fiddle, guitar, harmonica harp and hurdy-gurdy
workshops. In addition to those are workshops for mandolin, mountain dulcimer, piano, psaltery and ukulele
players. For a complete listing of workshops to be held

fairgrounds. Shoppers can purchase many types of folk
instruments, music books and other music accoutrements.
The events admission price allows entry to the workshops and concerts and will also include an annual

Celebrating big
in a small town
Fourth celebration in Luther
Live life in a small town. Celebrate big.

That could be the motto of tiny Luther in Lake County.
The village has a population of 318 according to the
2010 census, but it puts on one of the liveliest Fourth of
July celebrations anywhere.
The towns Fourth of July holiday includes all the condiments. Fireworks? It has them. Food, a parade, music,
camaraderie?
Check, check, check and check.
Plus, the townsfolk remember their past.
In the early 1900s, Luther was a well-known logging village. Some 1,500 people inhabited the village then.
In those days, loggers knew how to use crosscut saws,
peaveys and cant hooks. They could roll logs, shinny up
trees and do the other things necessary to extract a living
from giant white pine trees.

Favorite activities include the International Lumberjack Competition in which many of those old skills are
practiced, kids games, a horse pull, softball tournaments
and other events.
During the lumberjack competition, the sound of
chainsaws roars through town as contestants buzz
through logs with modern logging equipment. For those
who want to see how logging was done in the old days,
competitors use handsaws and axes.
Each year brings new delights. Among the old favorites
are bands and the booths of vendors.

Evart has full slate of concerts in store
The city of Evart has a whole summer of weekend music on tap with the
return of its annual concert series.
The Downtown Development Authority once again scheduled a full slate of
concerts. Al Weinberg, DDA director,
said the citys annual concert series
has a two-fold purpose: It brings quality cultural entertainment to an otherwise culturally underserved area, and
it draws people from around the state
and outlying areas of the Evart region
to the city. Many of those who attend
a concert turn into shoppers while in
town or return as shoppers another
day, he said.
He already has summers entertainment lineup set, too. The summer will
offer 10 weekends of entertainment.
The entertainment series will begin
with a John Rush and The Human Ipod performance on Thursday, June 9.
It will conclude Aug. 27 with a Magic
Bus performance. In between, those
in Evart for the weekend can see performances by the Luke Cyrus Band,

Following that array of artistic
events, Anne Hills, Matt Watroba and
Additional Acts will come to town. Finally, Rich Eddys Rockin Oldies will
make an appearance before the concluding weekend of the Magic Bus.
No admission is charged for the
concerts. Donations, however, are
solicited.
Two concerts will be clustered
around Independence Day.
The group, The Rock Show, will be
appearing Saturday, July 2. The following Friday, July 8, Karin Elizabeth
and the Remedy Band will present
a show beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the
Depot.
In the event of inclement weather,

the concerts will be held at Crossroads
Community Church across the street
from the Depot.

coming to the fair

The Northern District Fair Board has booked a new
grandstand event that they hope will be popular with
summer fair-goers ... motocross.
On Friday, Aug. 19, the racing event, Martins X-Treme
Racing, starts at 7 p.m.
This event is new for us and is open to people from
the community of all ages, stated Yvonne Meyer, board
secretary. Anyone can sign up and ride, people of all ages
with quads and motorcycles. And they also bring riders.
Motocross is off-road motorcycle racing held on enclosed, off-road circuits.
We will have classes for everyone from beginners up
to pro bikes and quads with money pay and trophies,
explained owner Adam Martin. We bring a builder for

the tracks and its safe and challenging for both younger
rides and the pros. Its fun for all the riders that come
out.
This year, the gate entrance fee is $2 which lets people
in to walk around and see exhibits. This year, senior citizens and veterans will be admitted for free.
The annual Northern District Fair of Cadillac will be
open Saturday, Aug. 13 through Aug. 20.
Summer fairs are a family event, with midway rides,
cotton candy and elephant ears, plus animals and grand
stand events.
Gates open at 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; at noon
on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Kids get ready for the

Osceola County Fair
Ah, the rustic lifestyle.
It is still alive and well in Osceola County. The evidence
is found at the county fair each summer.
The Osceola County 4-H and FFA Fair has been an ongoing affair since 1875. Showing the countys agricultural
spine, the fair continues much that is traditional.
School-aged youth still bring their livestock to town
to the county fairgrounds at the western edge of Evart.
Horses, ponies, goats, sheep, swine, beef and dairy animals, goats, poultry, rabbits and other animals theyre
there. And owners of the animals handle them for the
judges, talk about them, post displays and, in some cases,
let them get auctioned off.
But the fair isnt just about animals. Each year, fruits
and vegetables are on display. So are science projects and
other items. A fair, after all, is an event at which things

are put on display.

And the fair isnt just for the countys youth, either.
Adults can enter all sorts of things in open divisions.
The fair is a lot more than horse and goat barns, rabbit
cages and chicken hutches. Think entertainment.
Each year, of course, there also are midway rides,
cotton candy, food booths, tractor pulls and more. This
year, the fair will feature an antique tractor pull Friday
evening during fair week. A Farm Stock tractor pull will
take place Saturday evening.
This year, the fair will run July 25-30. The dates offer
county residents a chance to celebrate their rural roots
once again and have a final hurrah before fall sports
practices and other responsibilities begin.

Wow! What a time! A weekend
devoted to fun that will include a
beauty pageant, golf outing, parade, car show, live music, chicken
barbecue, childrens carnival and
a softball tournament. So many
activities packed into such a short
time. That is the Great American
Crossroads Celebration, an annual,
late-summer extravaganza.
Chastity Eads, the executive director of the Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce, said she doesnt
know how many years the celebration has been held, but it has been
going on in some fashion for a long
time. People simply enjoy coming
to it. The event annually draws be-
tween 3,000 and 5,000 people to town.

This year, the gala will run from
Thursday, Aug. 18, through Sunday,
Aug. 21. Its opening-evening kickoff
will feature the General Federation
of Womens Clubs sponsored Miss
Reed City Pageant.
On Friday will come the Reed
City Area Public Schools annual
Athletic Boosters Golf Outing. Also
will come the other activities for
which the festival is widely known.
The parade will wind through the
streets of town. Cars will line the
downtown area during the auto
show. Car aficionados will be able
to see everything from muscle cars
to antiques. The street will be roped

Many fan favorites returning to
Hoxeyville Music Festival
A regional band that has been a favorite of the Hoxeyville Music Festival returns this year to take the stage.
Michigan-based Greensky Bluegrass will headline the
Aug. 19 to 21 Hoxeyville Music Festival for two nights.
Local favorites Airborne or Aquatic, Luke Winslow
King and the Zak Bunce Project also will appear.
Other acts featured in this years lineup include Railroad Earth, Billy Strings, Sweetwater Warblers, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, the Crane Wives, Lindsay
Lou and the Flatbellys, The Go Rounds, Eggs Bernad and
the Electrons, The Accidentals, Macpodz, The Waydown
Wanderers, Whistle Stop Revue, Benzie Playboys, Ralston
Bowles, Big Dudee Roo, Fauxgrass, Barbarossa Bros,
Nicholas James and the Bandwagon, Roosevelt Diggs,
Cold Tone Harvest, Gifts or Creatures, Marke Lavengood

General admission three-day tickets with camping are
available at the pre-sale price of $130. If you are towing
anything, you must purchase an RV pass based upon
your length. Pop-ups, campers, and RVs less than 16-feet

are considered small RV. All towable campers and RVs

longer than 16-feet are large RV. Deluxe RV sites are no
longer offered. ADA camping is still located closest to the
main venue.
If you wish to camp with friends driving separate
vehicles, you must arrive in line at the gate at the same
time. Plan a meeting spot nearby and drive in together.
Campsites may not be held or reserved.
Admission for children ages 5 to 18 is $40 for the weekend. Children under age 5 are free.
Also keep in mind no dogs are allowed other than service animals. No camp fires or open fires are allowed. Do
not bring beer kegs, fireworks, illegal substances, laser
pointers, paper lanterns or weapons. Organizers ask that
attendees be considerate of others, and if you plan on setting up inside the main venue, have a low-backed, beachstyle chair so as to not obstruct the view of others.

is more than a blast from the past
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to

farm back in the early 1900s?
At the Buckley Old Engine Show Aug. 18 through
Aug. 21 event attendees will not only see antique
farm equipment, but also get a hands-on experience.
You can use a 100-year-old corn sheller; you can
run a grits mill to make seed, said Jim Luper, one of
the event coordinators.
Luper added there will be a wide range of antique
tractors on display at the event.
You can literally see the evolution of the tractor
from steam to kerosene to gas to diesel, he said.
Some of these things you look at (and) you wouldnt
even guess it was a tractor.

If farming equipment doesnt particularly interest

you, go shopping in the flea market or take a walk
down the 1900s street front and see a blacksmith, cobbler, old-time barber shop and general store.
There also will be hands-on events that will teach
the art of rope and soap making and even how to run
a loom.
In addition, two old trains will be giving rides
through the weekend, which Luper said is always a
big hit since not many people can say that have ridden a steam train.
A 1906 cider mill also will be giving away apple cider for free or if you prefer, there will be souvenir
glasses for sale.
You literally cannot see it all in one day.

We cover 300 acres, said Luper.
The cost to attend the event is $10 for
adults and children 15 and under are free.
Once into the event, the demonstrations,
apple cider and even train rides are free of
charge.
