The Big Bend Saltwater Classic was held last weekend and is a family
oriented fishing tournament. Launched in 1989 by The Organization for
Artificial Reefs, Inc. (OAR), a private, non-profit, marine interest group
based in Tallahassee, all of the proceeds derived from the event are
used to expand and develop a system of artificial reefs in the NE Gulf of
Mexico. According to Florida Sportsman Magazine, the tournament
ranks among the top saltwater fishing tournaments, by participation,
with an average of 700 competitors in recent years. The first
tournament was held at Shield's Marina in St. Marks. This was changed
in 1990 to Panacea Harbor Marina, then in 1991 The Moorings of
Carrabelle. During the years of 2006 to 2012, the tournament was held
at The Carrabelle Boat Club. In 2013, The Moorings of Carrabelle once
again became the headquarters for the 25th annual Big Bend Saltwater
Classic. Since 1990, the Tournament has been a three-day event set on
Father's Day Weekend. To see this years results, go to:

Stop by the Carrabelle History Museum any Thursday, Friday or

Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm to see the new mural of the Carrabelle
Harbor from 1880 to 1920. Where the Virgin Forest Met the Natural
Deepwater Port Artist Ray Andersen is still calling it a work in progress.
See if you can find the 1,000 pound pig! (And a few other things)

St. James Health & Rehab will host a Back to School Bash to kick
off this next school year. In order to make this happen, they are
reaching out to any & all, local/community partners, organizations, and
individuals who would like to assist in donating school supplies, back
packs, gift cards, etc. (Ill have a drop off box here at the Chamber)
They have reached out to Franklin County Health Dept. to see if it is
possible to set up a clinic at their facility for free immunizations &
school physicals. The plan is to also reach out to local physicians to
assist with getting these done as well. They are also reaching out to
local hair dressers/stylists to see if anyone is interested in donating
their time to provide free Back to School haircuts at the event, or to
donate gift certificates for students to come in for a free cut. Any
questions, please contact Kristine Bause, LPN, Admissions/Marketing
Director at (850) 697-2020
