Job Description

Position: Director of Discipleship

Objective: Provide Christian Education for children, youth and adults. Through the
teachings of Jesus Christ, seek to help our church family discover and
share their gifts, love one another, develop a respect and understanding
of differences, serve those in need, cultivate a personal spirituality and
prayer life, apply faith to daily life, and develop and nurture a personal
relationship with God.

Responsibilities: Evaluate, recommend and implement Christian Education curriculum for


the spiritual formation of children, youth, and adults.

Recruit, equip, and encourage Sunday School teachers.

Develop and promote grade 5/6 Pilgrim Fellowship program; recruit,


coordinate and encourage adult program leaders.

Lead in the education and training of teachers and adult volunteers in


Safe Church policy/procedures.

Serve as a resource and support to the Senior Pastor for Confirmation


Class.

Lead or coordinate an adult Bible study/book group; recruit, equip and


encourage lay leaders for additional small groups.

Keep current about developments in Christian Discipleship and


Education. Recommend, attend and communicate key learning from
approved training programs.

Visit Silver Lake annually, and provide information to children, youth and
adults about its programs.

Prepare and present a “children’s message” approximately twice each


month during worship service.

Prepare children for their First Communion.

Create, coordinate and present a children’s service, a youth service, and


a family service annually.

Organize and lead the children and youth Christmas Eve services, as well
as other special services.

Register children and youth for Sunday School; keep record of Sunday
School attendance.

Coordinate with the Senior Pastor regarding contacting new families and
visitors.
Develop and update annual program calendar; prepare monthly
newsletter articles and monthly calendar. Coordinate and integrate efforts
into the life of the church.

Supervise nursery care provider(s) and library volunteers.

Attend Board of Christian Education meetings.

Attend Church Council meetings as requested.

Attend twice monthly staff meetings.

Keep regularly scheduled office hours.

Prepare program budget for review by the Board of Christian Education,


and monitor compliance with the budget.

Qualifications: Enjoy teaching, leading and empowering children, youth, and adults in
their Christian faith formation in ways that strengthen their relationship
with God and make a meaningful difference in their lives, and the lives of
others.

Experience as a Director of Discipleship/Christian Education preferred.

Theological training, religious studies or commissioning as a minister for


youth and Christian education preferred. Biblical knowledge.

Ability to relate well to children, youth and adults.

Ability to recruit, equip and encourage lay leadership and volunteers.

Ability to engage participation in activities and programs.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong computer, email, organizational/administrative skills.

Hours: 25 hours weekly for 45 weeks annually (at least five weeks off in the
summer).

Reporting: Report administratively to the Senior Pastor. Responsible to the Senior


Pastor, Personnel Committee, and Church Council
