Celebrations Week Pound-for-Pound King
In a matter of months, we will witness change in our nation once again. But this time, instead of
being mere spectators, we will be part of that change, as I’m sure a lot of you, our loyal readers, will be
eligible to cast your vote on May 2010.
We’ve heard of different stories about the electoral process in our country, and in a lot of in-
stances, those stories have proven to be horrific, as was the case in Maguindanao. However, we shouldn’t
let dirty politics and goons, guns and gold affect our decision as to who we think should be leaders of our
country. To vote is your right! Exercise that right!
People say that the future of this nation is in the hands of our politicians. They couldn’t be any
farther from the truth—the future of this country is in the hands of the citizenry. Who we elect to take the
seat of the government will determine whether we rise from the mire we’re in, or if we’ll sink deeper.
We will not tell you who we think you should vote for—we are non-partisans in our reportage.
However, we will provide you, the first-time voter, a primer on the upcoming elections so that your deci-
sions may be well-informed, and your right to vote, well-used.

“…you’ll remember me somehow; though you don’t need me now I will stay in your heart.”
-Michael Jackson (1958-2009)
Michael Jackson’s legacy will be forever connected to his musical genius and jaw-dropping
dancing and the stories behind his every masterpiece is another record. Simply, its lyrics and
the melody are two inevitable trademarks that catch the ear, heart and breath of every listener.
The song “Heal the World” hits every Filipino, thus making it a local bet and an all-time
inspiration. Look at how far MJ has gone through with his campaign of building a positive
change and so much better days. His archives are now history. Want evidence? Why not
check out for your mom and dad’s record, they might be keeping MJ’s too. Here are his top
10 hits:
1. "Beat It"
Jackson never got much credit for being a pioneer. His melding of rock and R&B preceded
the meeting of Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith (pop. “I Can’t Stop This Feeling Anymore”) by
four years instead. Besides featuring one of the best guitar solos in pop history (provided free
of charge by Eddie Van Halen) it is the best proof of Jackson's ability to bridge moods and
genres. It is tense and spooky, it rocks, and yet you cannot help but to dance to it.
4. "Billie Jean"
Based on a real-life tragedy in which a woman accused Jackson of fathering her twins ("She says I am the one/ But the kid is not my son"), the song almost did not make it onto
Thriller because Quincy Jones, Jackson’s producer, hated its signature part: the bass line. Thumping and fraught, it feels like the soundtrack to a late-night walk through a bad neigh-
borhood. It successfully made Jackson sound dangerous, which was no small feat. Amazingly, the video was also one of the first by a black artist ever played on MTV.
6. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" Proving that he was more than just a sweet kid, this was the first song Jackson had full creative control over as a singer and songwriter. His
mother, a Jehovah's Witness, was reportedly stunned at the sexual entendre in the title. "Don't Stop" came out squarely at the end of the disco era, and yet it is so filled with energy and
instruments (trumpet, flugelhorn, electric piano) that it does not sound the least bit dated. No self-respecting wedding DJ goes anywhere without it.
7. A better album opener was harder to write than this one from Thriller, which not only pumps up the energy but lays out Jackson's ambitious musical agenda from the disco beat to the
rock timbre of the vocals to the closing refrain of "mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa," cribbed from "Soul Makossa," a hit by Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango. The closing
refrain sounds alike “Please Don’t Stop the Music” by Rihanna (2007).
9. "I'll Be There"
After three upbeat songs, this Berry Gordy–co-written ballad was the Jackson 5's first serious track, and it turned out to be its most successful. Michael and Jermaine share the lead
vocals, but it was Michael who had the memorable lines, opening with, "You and I must make a pact." He sounds almost too young to know what the word pact might mean. And the
ad-libbed ender, "Just look over your shoulders, honey," a reference to the Four Tops' "Reach Out, I'll Be There."
10. "Ben"
This song about a rat, from the 1972 film of the same name, was originally offered to Donny Osmond. That tells you all you ought to know about the quality of the composition. The
vocal is another exemplifying story. In classic style, Jackson, 14 at the time of its release, confers just enough to make us believe that he and Ben have "both found what we were
looking for," but his coercion is just as powerful. Every note is clean and understated, giving "Ben" a dignity far above its station.
Did you know also that MJ collaborated with The Beatles’ Paul McCartney in “Say Say Say,” an encouraging love song in 1987? Besides that, they did the song “The Girl Is Mine,”
a rival of two gentlemen.
Jackson was acquitted in the Gavin Arvizo case, dramatically so, but the effect on his mental state was ruinous. Nevertheless, Jackson has half ownership of the copyrights to
The Beatles catalogue with the record company Sony which has kept him from insolvency. Although Sony has been in position for more than a year where it can already repossess
Michael’s share of the catalogue, they are afraid of an adverse reaction from his fans. The record company has been settling his accounts.
He has as many as 200 unpublished songs that could be worth as much as £60million. This will ensure his kids a comfortable living with their grandmother despite Jackson’s death.
A scheduled series of concert this year is supposedly a comeback of the King of Pop entiled This is It. What is worth noting is that, the O2 Arena in London has the most sophisti-
cated lip synching technology in the world which is a particular attraction for a singer who can no longer sing. Had, by some miracle, the concert series gone ahead, Jackson’s personal
contribution could have been limited to just 13 minutes for each performance. The rest was to have been appearance, choreography and lights.
Michael Jackson’s being legendary and masterful relates a generation to another. People will remember that one day a pop icon and moonwalker had tried to heal every nation and
make a difference to build a better world. His spirit lives on through his music and legacy as the King of Pop and the Greatest Entertainer of Our Time.

Pacquiao: The
currently residing in his home town, General Santos City, South Cotabato. He is married to Jinkee Pacquiao with four children. Also known as
Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, he is a Filipino legendary professional boxer having 7 different titles in 7 different divisions in the world of boxing
and he is rated by The Ring Magazine as the Pound-for-Pound King. Pacquiao also dabbled in music recording, politics and acting as well.
Pound-for-Pound
Pacman started his boxing career at the age of 16 at 106 lbs (light flyweight). His professional debut was a 4 round match against Ed-
mund “Enting” Ignacio on January 22, 1995 wherein Pacquiao won via decision. That him an instant star.
King
Pacquiao’s big break came on June 23, 2001 when he won the fight against Super Bantam Weight Champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba by
technical knockout and then defended the title five times.
He rose in the first fight with Barrera in the Feather Weight Division and defeated Barrera via T.K.O. Because of that, Pacquiao was
recognized as the World Champion by the Ring Magazine after his victory. Months after, Pacquiao went on to another challenge of a respected by Patrick Villacorta
Mexican counter puncher, the holder of the WBA and IBF Feather Weight titles, Juan Manuel Marquez. The result of the match was controversial
because after Pacquiao knocked down Marquez in the first round, the result of the match is a draw.
Later on, Pacquiao moved up to another division which is 126 to 130 lbs (Super Feather Weight). to fight a Mexican boxer and a three-
time champion Erik Morales. Unfortunately, Pacquiao lost by a unanimous decision. Meanwhile, on September 10, 2005, Pacquiao fought with
a Mexican boxer named Hector Velazquez and captured WBC International Super Feather Weight title, on the same day when Erik Morales lost
against American national Zahir Raheem via unanimous decision.
After half a year, Pacquiao and Morales had a rematch. This is record-breaking, as this was the first knockout loss of Morales through-
out his boxing career via tenth round.
Pacman, consequently, did not wait for a long time to face another boxer. He defeated Oscar Larios, a Mexican boxer wherein he got
the WBC International Super Feather Weight title. After a couple of months, Morales asked a decision match with Pacquiao, they fought again
for the third time and by then, Pacquiao did not waste his time. He knocked out Morales only on the third round.
Before the year 2006 ended, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao named by both HBO and Ring Magazine as the Fighter of the Year, HBO also
quoted Pacquiao as the Most Exciting Fighter of the Year.
The next opponent Bob Arum chose to match up Pacquiao with was a Mexican boxer named Jorge Solis. Even though Pacquiao got a
cut under his left eyebrow, he knocked Solis down twice. And after the fight with Solis, the much-awaited rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera
was set. Still, Pacquiao won by a unanimous decision.
On March 15, 2008, another rematch against Marquez entitled the “Unfinished Business” set in. The business was finally ended, so to
speak, when Pacquiao knocked Marquez down in the third round. Pacman won the WBC and The Ring Super Feather Weight Belts. These made
him be the first Filipino to win major world titles. After this breath-taking match, Pacquiao moved to Light Weight Division (135 lb) to challenge
American national David Diaz, the reigning WBC Light Weight Champion. Pacman defeated Diaz via knockout on the ninth round and became
the WBC Light Weight Champion.
The Ring’s “Fighter of the Year” in 1995 and Ring Magazine’s top-rated Pound for Pound fighter in the world in 1997 – have you ever
thought that a Filipino boxer will have a match against the legendary Oscar dela Hoya? The bout last December 6, 2008 was a 12-round, non-
title fight at the 147-pound (67 kg) welterweight limit. Although Manny Pacquiao went into the fight recognized as the leading pound-for-pound
boxer in the world, some pundits speculated that 147 pounds could have been too far above his natural weight against the larger De La Hoya.
However, Pacquiao’s trainer Roach was confident of a victory as he stated that De La Hoya could no longer “pull the trigger” at that stage in his
career. De La Hoya, who was favored to win the bout due to his size advantage, was expected to be the heavier of the two on fight night. De La
Hoya entered the ring at 147 pounds to Pacquiao’s 148.5 pounds (67.4 kg). De La Hoya lost the fight by way of TKO after 9 rounds in a dominant
performance by Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao also defended against Ricky Hatton for the IBO and The Ring Magazine’s Light Welter Weight titles. He started the fight
strong, thus knocking Hatton down twice in the first round and on the second round, Pacquiao finished Hatton with a mind-blowing punch
awarding him K. O.
Moreover, Pacquiao had a historical match against Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto, which was an impressive and mind-blowing clash
even though Cotto is a powerful boxer. He was also held victorious over the WBC Welter Weight Champion Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao became the
first boxer to win7 major champion belts in 7 different divisions.
Most recently, he won the Welterweight Title against African boxer Joshua Clottey via 12 round lat March 14, 2010.
Pacquiao was featured not only in T. V. Commercials but also in boxing video games, the EA sports, The Fight Night 4. It has a limited
edition demo of fight featuring Pacman and Ricky Hatton and he became the first Filipino athlete to appear on a postage stamp but wait there’s
more. Did you know that Sylvester Stallone plans to do a movie with our very own Manny Pacquiao? Stallone, reportedly, is a Pacquiao fan and
he wants Manny to be his co-star.
Did you know that not only Pacquiao has a match? Even his wife, Jinkee Pacquiao has a match versus Krista Ranillo, too. She has
been accused that she is his concupiscence. Many people were intrigued of that issue especially when it was reported that Manny gave Krista
a condominium unit. Others say that a car was also given.
Scattered online are pictures of Manny Pacquiao in U.S. with
