TROUBLESHOOTING

3-1

INTRODUCTION
Chapter 3 is designed to guide the maintenance agent in troubleshooting and correcting any failures as
rapidly as possible to reduce printer downtime to a minimum for level 1 maintenance.
It describes a range of failures that may occur during operation, but does not claim to be exhaustive.
IER 567 printer maintenance is faciltated by use of the test keypad and observation of the two LEDs
inside the printer.

3-1-1

Test Keypad
The test keypad is used to configure and perform maintenance (run maintenance tests) of IER 567
printers when the printer keypad is unavailable.
The test keypad is powered by the printer.
Refer to the IER 567 Printer technical manual for use of the two keypads.

3-1-2

Printer LEDs
Refer to the IER 567 Printer technical manual for details about the meaning of the printer LEDs.

3-1-3

Failures during Operation

Such failures make the printer totally or partially unable to print documents.

Ce document est la proprit de IER et ne doit pas tre reproduit ou communiqu sans autorisation crite

GENERAL ORGANIZATION
General
When a failure causes a voluntary or involuntary stopping of document processing, audio and visual
signals usually indicate where the document was located on occurrence of the failure (see table
below).
Printer failure
Visual and audio signals
LCD display
Buzzer
LEDs

Document location
Input (bins, rear feeders)
In the paper path (magnetic and print modules)
Output (ejection, front stacker, reject bin)

Such failures mainly concern:

Paper feed (bins, rear feeders, straight and curved paper path, front stacker, reject bin, front
feeder)
Magnetic processing (encoding and reading)
Thermal printing
Read of the stock control number (SCN option).
3-2-2

Troubleshooting Method
After identification of the cause of a failure and the items involved, each item is checked in three
stages:
Physical check: drive (wear), sensor (dirt), connector (bad contacts), etc.
Functional test: actuator (solenoid or motor) movement, sensor state (detection level), LED state, etc.
The printer keypad is used for the functional tests. If it is unavailable, the test keypad is used (for use
of the keypad, refer to the printer technical manual).
The following printer components can be tested:
Magnetic module
Sensors
Motors
Solenoids
LCD display
Buzzer
LEDs
Counters.

Use the procedures described in Chapter 2 of this manual and the submenus described in
Chapter 2, sheet A-2 to test the printer components.

The terms top and bottom refer to a printer set on its baseplate

The printer is repaired by:

Cleaning any soiled components (refer to Chapter 2 of this manual)
Standard replacement of any defective components (refer to Chapter 2 of this manual)
Adjustment of the failed component or functional system (refer to Chapter 2 of this manual)
For troubleshooting and repair, refer to Figure 3-1 to Figure 3-20.
